Common Questions and Answers about Tooth infection antibiotic treatment

infection

Avatar n tn i have been on antibiotics for 5 days for a tooth infection. The lower part of my jaw and my neck in the last 2 days have become extremely swollen and i am having a hard time swallowing. I have an appt on thursday for surgery but it seems the infection is getting worse. Should I go to the hospital?
Avatar n tn I will be going back to the US in 2 months, so until then i was wondering if there is any temporary treatment i can use to relieve the pain of the infection (maybe an Antibiotic? If so will that antibiotic prevent a reinfection for atleast 2 months?) Do you think i will have to have my root canaled tooth extracted when i go back to the US, since this is the second time an infection has happened in this tooth even after a retreat?
Avatar m tn I thought the endodontist did a very poor job). So now I'm on my 2nd day of 500 mg Penicillin QID, and I'm still having pain. I've been taking 600 mg Ibuprofen Q6HR alternating with 1000 mg Acetometophin Q6HR, which helps, but I was wondering: how long should I wait till I possibly suspect the antibiotic is not doing the job on the infection? Also, it was recommended that I have a redo of said root canal, which I agree with, but...is that going to be a very difficult procedure?
Avatar n tn What can I give my dog to help reduce the infection in her tooth before her appointment to have it removed?
Avatar f tn I am suppose to have a root canal 3 days after being on this antibiotic. Is 3 days enough time on an antibiotic for infection in tooth before having root canal?
Avatar f tn how long does it take to see improvement with Trilostane and could the antibiotic for the tooth interfere with the effects of Trilostane? Also, should I have an ACTH stimulation test as well? I ask because after about a week on the Trilostane I noticed a marked improvement in the excessive drinking and a tiny increase in energy level. The vet told me that the excessive urine production would take longer to diminish and I hadn't really noticed a big change with that.
Avatar m tn Hey! so my situation is i have a pretty bad tooth infection due to a half done root canal and pretty terrible negligence from a dentist. I've had all types of tooth pain but this is probably the worst, This also happens to be in the same location i had surgery to remove a tooth fragment from a root that was left 12 years ago which started to root and cause multiple abscess.
Avatar n tn I had a root canal on #14 due to a dead nerve. No infection was found. The endodontist drilled thru a crown that was on the tooth. One week later the left side of my face started swelling, my eye reddened and was tearing. I was put on Clindomyacin for an infection----that was now seen on the x ray. The antibiotic worked great, swelling & pain went away. Now that I am off the antibiotic---the pain is returning, left maxillary, eye pain & head aches---no swelling at this time.
Avatar n tn If you have a dental school near you, you can get the tooth removed for about the same price as a stronger antibiotic. If you have already taken a week of amoxicillin, another dose will not likely help, the bacteria you still have are already resistant. Otherwise, I would call your dentist back, tell him about your infection/swelling, that you cannot afford an extraction this week, and you need a different antibiotic. Also offer to make an appt.
Avatar n tn I have a broken tooth , then my Teeth becoming very sensitive and getting pain in jaw because of sensitive it will be infected. The Causes of sensitive teeth include: 1) Poor oral hygiene – This can lead to plaque and tartar build-up, with resultant dental problems. 2) Gum recession – This can occur naturally over time, whereby the gums shrink back to expose the root surfaces.
Avatar f tn necrotic, then I would think that a root canal would be an advisable procedure. I had a necrotic tooth and an infection in my gum, an infection which did not clear up until a root canal procedure was performed.
Avatar n tn when i had gone back to the dentist and they put me on stronger antibiotics i do remember they said something about a lingular abscess and madublar extension or perhaps i have those phrases reversed. he said that the infection in my tooth had spread to soft tissue in my cheek. that's why i was put on stornger anitbiotics. he wanted it to clear up before he proceeded. what would be the concerns with infection of a parotid gland?
Avatar m tn How long after starting amoxicillin before the pain from a tooth infection goes away? I saw the dentist and started taking amoxicillin about 30 hours ago. I have a root canal scheduled a week from now. But the pain is as intense as it was prior to starting the treatment. I do have type II diabetes treated with diet and pills. I know this can prolong infections. But wow, I sure would like the pain to decrease. I'm taking vicodin and it still hurts! Thanks!
Avatar n tn On Jan 10 I had a titanium post inserted into my # 30, a previous root canal tooth (from several years ago). The next day I was in pain, and the pain continued to worsen, including some pretty severe jaw pain. The dentist adjusted the bite, then assumed it was infection, so put me on 10 day penicillin. Nearing the end of that, I developed swelling on the outside gum, the dentist put me on 7 day clindamycin.
Avatar n tn my sister has an abcessed tooth in which she has yet to finish a round of antibiotics. I know that if you use antibiotic too much your body can build up a resistance to them and not work properly. She does not have health insurance and right now her face is severly swollen. she has said everytime she goes to the hospital (3x) all they do is give her antibiotics and send her home. She really need some help.
Avatar n tn Severe toothache of a lower leftside tooth has been diagnosed as infection by my dentist; this tooth had a long-ago root canal and subsequent crown so he recommended re-evaluation by endodontist. (my dentist first presribed antibiotic (clindamycin) and vicodin for severe pain. Saw the endo yesterday, said to wait for infection to clear; then will re-do the root canal (either by drilling hole etc, plan A, or the apicentry (sp?) procedure.
Avatar n tn Sounds like you need an antibiotic, and even some vicoden or something. I'm sure being pregnant limits your options for pain control, and maybe even the antibotics. The doctor, or dentist who did the extraction should have given you antibiotics and pain medication if they were needed. I'd call whoever extracted your tooth and find out if pain medication and/or antibiotics are warranted.
Avatar f tn It would be nice if anyone would answer if cipro is an ok antibiotic for a tooth infection. I had a crown come off and dentist said I needed root canal. they tried but said root was too narrow and I had to go to specialist. They gave me a prescription for amoxil for one other tooth, but I didn't6 fill it because it was just sensitive one day. But now the one they were working on has flared up and the gum is swollen and red.
Avatar n tn I think the endodontist would have placed you on antibiotic therapy if he thought you needed it. It is important that after the treatment the tooth is taken out of occlusion so that you don't bite on it. If you close your mouth without any food and you feel the tooth then the tooth has to be adjusted.
3134702 tn?1342642293 Started 1 week of penicillin after weekend of light tooth pain. The cheek & lip became numb when I began the antibiotics.Changed to another antibiotic because the cheek and lip numbness continued After 1 week my dentist performed root canal and the tooth is doing well, but the lip and cheek numbness continues three days after procedure. My antibiotics end today and the office is closed. My question is, do I need more antibiotics? How long does it take for the numbness to go away?
Avatar f tn It sounds as if the pulp (nerves) of the tooth has died, therefore has caused an infection. This means that the tooth either needs a root canal treatment, to remove the pulp or the tooth extracting. Root canal treatments are not always sucessful but if you are keen to preserve the tooth are worth a try. Extracting the tooth would more than likely solve the problem.
Avatar f tn i too had an abscess,my tooth had to be extracted(it was the tooth that already had root canal treatment,i had cracked it) and was on 3 different antibiotics.it took me just over 2weeks to heal.
Avatar n tn I think the reason the tooth is mobile is because you still have an active infection present. The antibiotics will relieve the symptoms but will not cure the infection. That will be done with successful root canal therapy. You need to return to the dentist for further treatment.
Avatar f tn I called her the next morning, came in, and she looked at it, prescribed me an antibiotic and a medical mouth wash. The gum are swollen, but since there is no pain in the tooth, she thinks it's just swollen from the prepping of the teeth (and I guess the antibiotic is a precaution), I had a tooth extracted in that area about 2 1/2 weeks ago, and it had heeled fine. Yesterday, my lymph nod also hurt briefly but that's gone today. Now its a day later and it looks and feels about the same.
850029 tn?1238857820 I have a friend who has a tooth absess. He went in about two weeks and had the tooth pulled. He was sent home and about 4 days later went in with the area so swollen he could barely breath. The area was also draining puss. He was in the hospital for two days trying to get the infection under control and the draining to stop. Finally the oral surgeon went in and took out the infected tissue. He went back today (a week later) and the area is still infected and swollen.
Avatar f tn I am 25+ 4 do you think the infection harmed my baby before itwas pulled? What kind of harm can a tooth infection do to an unborn baby? Also I am in SUCH PAIN! ***** getting teeth pulled wgile pregnant- no pain killers for this patient!
