Prozac for ocd in children

Common Questions and Answers about Prozac for ocd in children

prozac

Avatar n tn I found it made me more anxious/jumpy after the first week of taking them but that only lasts for about a week. Hang on in there, give the prozac a chance to work, if after 6 weeks you feel no better or feel worse then go back to your doctor. You may want to consider giving yourself a break from work, less pressure on you and time to try and relax. Exercise is always good as well.
Avatar n tn has prescribed him Celexa for the OCD/Anxiety disorder. I have read that this medication is not recommended in children. Is it safe for him to take this medication? Or is there anywhere I can look for information on the use of this medication in children?
Avatar f tn When you have OCD you can convince yourself of anything and it just sticks in your mind to the point where you don' know what reality is anymore. I'm glad you got her treatment. My sister started with OCD at age 7 so your daughter's age does not surprise me. I honestly don't know about medication and children your daughter's age. I'm sure there is some research out there.
Avatar n tn As you know by your direct experience, OCD has its origins in the chemistry of the brain, in particular in the chemicals known as neurotransmitters. It is very much accepted that OCD, of at least moderate severity, should be treated with medication as part of the overall plan. It's sometimes difficult to overcome the perceptions and pressures of relatives, but proceed with what you know is the correct thing to do.
Avatar f tn Strattera is used to treat ADD/ADHD in both adults and children. However, Prozac is used to treat depression as well as to eliminate or reduce the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and bulimia nervosa (an eating disorder). It is not used to treat ADD/ADHD. Something is missing here .....
Avatar n tn I have been on it for 8yrs for depression/OCD/Panic disorder. It has worked wonders for me. And for that I am truly thankful. But now 8yrs later, I am 50lbs heavier and have my libido is Nil. I want to come off paxil or switch to something else. Has anyone successfully done this? I have only taken off 3mg of paxil for two weeks now and I'm dizzy and I awake at 3:00 am with tremors/fear. I was wondering if adding Prozac while decressing the Paxil would make if easier? I ask my Dr.
Avatar n tn What about my question what the Prozac is suppose to do for OCD.... is it suppose to just help with anxiety or stop the obsessions?
560272 tn?1311353893 4 months off Prozac, and I can barely leave my home. I'm thinking that this is not good.
Avatar n tn Hey Cheryl, It definitely sounds like a form of OCD. Skin-picking is a OCD-spectrum disorder when it gets to the stage that you are talking about. BDD is a bit different, it doesn't sound as if you have that--but definitely OCD as skin-picking. Do a search on the web for "skin picking" and OCD and see if you find anything that sounds like you. I suspect you will. You probably need to see a professional about this, with meds it is typically easy to get under control.
Avatar n tn I did however want to say that my dermatologist prescribed Ativan for me for itching (from my ezecma)and I could not take it in conjunction with the Buspar. I did not know that Ativan was used also for anxiety. I do know they said it would make me very drowsy. Anyway, thanks again everyone, I will let you know how it goes at the doctors office. And John W. I make take you up on your offer to explain certain meds. to me when she prescribes a new one for me. Thanks for helping me out in advance.

192055 tn?1263559137 I took Anafranil years ago, but there are other drugs used for OCD-Paxil, Prozac, and some of the even newer ones. Also, OCD is hereditary in many cases. Ask your husband if anyone in his family has similar behaviors/thoughts. He should go to a psychiatrist/psychololgist who knows something about OCD and see if that is indeed his problem.
Avatar f tn Does anyone have these same symptoms with child on Prozac. By the way the Prozac is helping the OCD. This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/1118126'>My 7 year old is having disturbing thoughts..</a>.
Avatar n tn Hey, Doc, Do you have anything in your magic bag for people who ask too many questions? Anything for someone like me who has a compulsion to put 2 packets of sweet and low in his morning coffee? If so, hook me up...I'm insured.
Avatar n tn First, we are scheduled to see a pediatric specialist in a few weeks. I am writing for your opinion-- not for a solution or diagnosis. I have been trying to figure my son out, it seems, since he was born-- he is now almost eight. As a baby he was rigid with needing routine/structure. He did have some social issues along the way and a clear problem with impulse control.
Avatar n tn Dear all, I want to thank you all for sharing your stories and personal experiences; I'm relieved to hear that I'm not the only one who is going through this. I've been absolutely tormented with my body since I was 11 years old. I was sexually abused by my father, and though I have rationalised that I've got over that and what's done is done, I do wonder if this lies at the heart of having such a bad relationship with my body - it is constantly persecuting me!
Avatar n tn OCD is a serious anxiety disorder and one of the more difficult to treat. Liquid Prozac (an SSRI) would not be unheard of to treat a child as young as your grandson. However, if the parents are uncomfortable with this method of treatment, I might suggest that they request a referral to a medical specialist with experience in anxiety disorders as a child psychiatrist or a child neurologist. By the way, pulling out one's hair is called Trichotillomania - another anxiety disorder.
Avatar n tn The doctors have to test specifically for this kind. this type causes silent seizures. And often is mistook for OCD in children... a simple EEG would be the tell all..
Avatar n tn Alot of them met in secure places and it gives them and their children a chance to socialise without the constant worry or where are they and what are they doing.
Avatar n tn We met with a child psychiatrist and gave us the diagnosis but also said she had OCD and prescribed Prozac for her(about 1/4 tsp every day). I am concerned about putting her on meds but also feel horrible for her and her tantrums have been unbearable (stemming from the obsessions) for our entire family. Is meds for this along with therapies for the other autism issues the right thing or should i think twice about putting her on meds?
Avatar n tn That was six years ago and there has been a lot of research in the area of psychiatric medications for children in the past few years. Coming off of Prozac was one month of hell but there seemed no other choice at the time. The second medication our doctor suggested was from another family - SSNRI - and was Effexor XR. Zoloft and Prozac (as is Luvox) are from the SSRI family (don't know about Anafranil) .
Avatar n tn The non-stimulant ADD drug Strattera seemed to make a nice impact on his attention span for school work, etc., and he remains on this. In 3rd grade, inappropriate touching, noises, etc. made an return when school started. A new evaluation (more expenses!) resulted in a diagnsosis of Asperger's Syndrome.
1699033 tn?1514116733 Pure-O OCD stands for Purely Obsessional OCD. This form of OCD usually involves thoughts rather than compulsions. When one of these irrational thoughts enters our mind, we endlessly ruminate about it over and over again trying to either prove or disprove the thought. The next thing you know you are caught up in the vicious cycle that is OCD irrational thinking. The whole "What-if" or "Could I possibly do that?" thing.
Avatar n tn i've read a strep infection could first trigger ocd in children. also a chemical imbalance, or lack of serotonin in the brain could be part of the problem. and, also vitamin b6 produces serotonin. might help. better STOP this soon, or she'll probably end up like me....nervous system collapse, always dizzy, sick and unable to function for more than a few minutes at a time without resting. she's young, she still has a real good chance. tough love..
199177 tn?1490502134 I just cant believe this she now has a web site asking for donations . She wanted all of these kids but she expects others to pay for them. This is so wrong ...
Avatar f tn I use to take Prozac, I've been dealing with OCD/GAD for 23 years. But it was time for something different, that happens. The side effect do go away in time, and I think its worth going through a little to get so much better. Some time doctors may have to try a couple different things to get the right thing for you so don't get discouraged. I did take Effexor one time and it did not help me out at all.
3159640 tn?1430910900 I mean really our minds may think up really stupid scenarios but fake blood isn't going to get our anxiety up. For myself, I sat in an AIDS clinic. I work for the university side of a hospital and I was seeing a psychologist at work and so my exposure therapy was to sit in the AIDS clinic for several weeks during my lunch hour. She had to go with me at first but then I just went on over there and sat.
1306047 tn?1333247191 I'm really interested in some real life testimonies of people's experiences with medication for anxiety and perhaps OCD. I'd appreciate some perspectives anyone who care's to elaborate.
