Common Questions and Answers about Prozac and ocd

prozac

Avatar n tn Tapering off (slowing coming off it) the Prozac and titrating (increasing slowly) Wellbutrin is recommended if you decide to change your antidepressants. Talk to your psychiatrist and ask about these suggestive strategies.
Avatar n tn I personaly dont agree with A.Ds "ssris, snris, all of em" My theroy is that people with anxiety are over stimulated as a result from Higher production of Seritonin, Norepinephrine, Dopeamine, and the onder production of GABA. A.D's make those certian nerotransmitter more sensitive, creating worse panic. And of course the GABA definently can keep up with the other 3 nerotransmitters because it already had a unhealthy lowered functioning level.
248167 tn?1220367290 i'm seeing a new psychiatrist, i've been given the diagnoses of Bipolar II, OCD, and Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia. and the 4 meds i've been given are really working! so i guess the bottom line is to get a diagnosis first. what you may need is a doctor that is thorough. (wow i totally digressed didn't i? :p i hope i'm not making things worse) Please don't be afraid of the trial and error period. if you don't feel like yourself, call your doctor and stop taking the medication.

Avatar n tn Hi Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the drug of choice for OCD. The common SSRIs include fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil) and fluvoxamine (Luvox). The main indication for SSRIs are depression, anxiety, panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, eating disorders and sometimes Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However it should be remembered that all medications must be taken under medical supervision.
Avatar n tn I have used xanax as a crutch and I don't want to rely on prozac pills my whole life. What are your views of prozac and OCD especially for a person like myself, who has been blessed with 22 happy years???? I'm obvioulsy obssesing over this issue now. It was and still is HIV, but now i'm so concerned about the xanax because of the horror stories i have read. Lastly, I have taken propranolol for speech anxiety.
Avatar f tn Well, I was incredibly stupid and thought I no longer needed medication and weaned off of Prozac last October. Needless to say, my OCD came back full force (worse this time around) in March of this year. I honestly thought I was going to die. Well, after a try on Lexapro which made me tired and more depressed I went back on Prozac. I started on 20 mg eight weeks ago, went up to 40 mg six weeks ago, and now have been on 60 mg for 2 1/2 weeks. The last time I was on Prozac 40 mg the entire time.
Avatar n tn I have taken prozac off and on for 20 years. This last reason I started taking prozac was because my hubby was going to Iraq and I started my checking and worrying about him. He is back now and I have weened myself off again of prozac and I have this awful headache that wont go away. I have had the headache for 4 days now. I have weened myself off plenty of times and never felt like this.
Avatar n tn I have OCD and am be treating successfully with Prozac (50mg) and therapy. Over the past couple of months I've been experiencing tinging, pins and needles and some numbness around my mouth and in my right hand. I also experience mild tinnitus. My psychiatrist said that she thought these symptoms are due to anxiety. I don't FEEL anxious when I'm having them...I've been feeling pretty good mental health wise.

Avatar f tn 20 mg prozac is a low dosage and generally not in the therapuetic range for OCD treatment. Generally dosages are 20 to 40 mg for depression, and 60 to 80 mg (and occasionally higher) for OCD. I personally took 80 mg prozac for 16 years. And I agree with JGF25. Long term effects? I wouldn't BE HERE long term if I hadn't taken meds. I also have low thyroid. Years ago, my dr. said to just view my SSRI as I do my thyroid supplement, something my body needs.
Avatar n tn Doctors have put her on Ritalin, Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, and Welbutrin. We saw no change with any of these meds. We've seen phychiatrists, phychologists, and social workers. There are some other behaviors that have led the docs to lean towards OCD but I have written quite a bit already. Any advice I can get will be welcome. Thanks for listening.
Avatar f tn I also feel alone as I know that there is millions of people who have OCD but no one that I know, and my husband thinks I'm dumb for worrying about things over and over. I guess repitition is insanity though, ha. I know I'm not crazy, I feel like I'm doing things that aren't apart of the image I have of myself, or who I want to be. OCD shouldn't have this control over anyone, but it's hard to fight off your brain. Anyways, if you need to talk, I can relate to you, and your not alone!
Avatar n tn I have a 25-yr old brother in Turkey who has been diagnosed with prolonged depression and OCD. We lost our father 13 yrs ago. He was murdered, and my brother saw his father's body right after the incident. My brother says he has several questions he has had since he was 9 yrs old.
Avatar f tn I used to take Prozac for my anxiety, panic disorder, and OCD, and it seemed to work great. About a year ago I quit cold-turkey because I lost a family member and I thought that the medications had stopped working. I totally regret it. I have been taking Prozac again for 3 weeks now. I started 1 week on 10 MG and now for 2 weeks have been on 20. My anxiety seems to be a little better.. I am more calm..
Avatar n tn fyi - I accidentally came across something and that is how I found out what his OCD was mainly about and his racing thoughts. He's told me about his depression and OCD and medication.
Avatar n tn I was on prozac a while ago for panic attacks and OCD, and it helped so I will be going back on it within the next week. I remember have some unpleasant side effects at first, such as feeling panicking, very dizzy and headaches. Can anyone please tell me how I can deal with the side effects to make it a better experience? Also, what is the typical length of the side effects....how long should they typically last?
Avatar f tn I hope these two things help me finally defeat my ocd. It seems my ocd likes to ruin everything though. I was hopeful about prozac and beginning a running routine because I thought maybe I can finally overcome my worries. But then I started worrying about side effects of prozac. It brought back my sleepwalking worries...what if I sleepwalk and do something horrible sleep. I have also noticed my legs jerking and twitching.
Avatar n tn My daughter is 9 yrs old and taking trazadone and now prozac has been prescribed. I have not given her the prozac yet because I am worried about what all these meds are going to do to her mental growth. She is diagnosed with OCD, Mood disorder, Asperger syndrome also ODD. But is very high functioning. Will adding prozac really make a difference? I am worried about everything I am hearing on the news about children on anti depressents getting suicidal thoughts.
Avatar f tn about a year and a half ago i was finally sent to a psychiatrist when 40mg of prozac wasnt doing anything much. She diagnosed me with bipolar, anxiety and OCD. She upped me to 60mg of the prozac which actually did help but also put me on seroquel xl which im now on 300mg of an miratazipine 15mg at night to help me sleep a bit better.
Avatar n tn I would love to hear from anyone else who is currently pregnant or TTC and is in a similar situation and if anyone has continued it through there entire PG and then breast fed.
Avatar m tn there are no interactions I am aware of between Prozac and the medications you mention. Parenthetically, one way to minimize the likelihood that uncommon medication interactions is to make sure that you are using the same pharmacy to get your prescriptions filled. Pharmacists are supposed to (and typically do) comprehensively review new medications for possible interactions.
Avatar n tn I used to take Zoloft and Prozac and Klonopin. Seperate time periods, but I didn't like the unreal feeling they made me feel like and the stomach cramps from them.
Avatar f tn My 8 year old grandson has been on strattera and prozac for a year now. About a month ago he starting acting out in very strange ways. He pooped on the floor in the school bathroom and blamed it on someone else, then urinated in the school bathroom and swears in wasn't him. He went into his grandfathers barn and threw plastic bins of collectibles all over and broke things, then took mail out of neighbors mailboxes and threw it in the water in the ditch.
Avatar f tn I was on fluoxetine (Prozac) for over a year from July 2011 then weaned off as was feeling and doing great and not wanting to be dependent on them, I had a bad week 5 week ago now with sleep so my doctor put me back on them and after 1/2 week felt great off 20mg at tea time, now this last week mainly from Wednesday I feel rubbish I know I'm getting 7/8 hours sleep but not feeling refreshed was wondering if changing to take it morning at 20mg and see if it works better or carry on tea time taking
Avatar n tn I may try therapy again but I hate to sound pessimistic but I really think I will always struggle a bit with this and I can live with masking it a bit, we all have our battles I guess. I do get a little OCD about the side effects and withdrawal symptoms lists so I am trying to not think about it as much but you know how that goes.
Avatar n tn I was off the wall on prozac and I have ocd/anxiety. Lexapro isn't bad just start out low and then paxil, zoloft, etc. are other choices but prozac is way, way stimulating for people with anxiety.
Avatar n tn Actually Prozac a.k.a Fluxotine (spelling?) is an SSRI which is known to work well in treating OCD symptoms and Depression. I would at least stay on it two weeks as that is how long it takes for it to build up and create an effect. Also if it does not work make sure you don't just stop taking it as there can be with-drawl due to the long half-life. I was on Prozac for at least four years just incase your wondering where I get my info. Good Luck!
Avatar n tn ) ago the obsessions and cumpulsions returned with a vengence and I am now working with a wonderful therapist and psychiatrist and am on Prozac (40 mg) and am doing well. Now...here is the question. My anxiety about the obsessions I have has greatly improved but I'm still obsessing A LOT! Is the medication suppose to reduce anixty alone or stop the obsessions? My second question is: Can Prozac cause seizures in people prone to them?
Avatar n tn I am 42 now, married and is professionally quite successful. But OCD keeps me from enjoying life. My OCD is mostly about obsessive and meaningless thoughts which makes me anxious and increases my blood pressure. Many a times OCD increases when I am in a dilema: like when making a decision between two alternatives. Even after I make the right decision, nagging doubt continues for months and creates stress and BP rises. I continued to shy away from seeking medical help due to social stigma.
