Avatar n tn Before I condemn the doctor is there a valid reason for someone so young to be given Prozac,do you know why she was put on it.My son was on Clonodine at 6 then was changed to Haloperidol at 10,Then at 12 they wanted to put him on Respiridone(not sure of the spelling)In the end I said no more drugs.
Avatar n tn I have also questioned how doctors can legally prescribe these meds to young children when the manufacturer also states that these meds are NOT recommended for anyone under the age of 18! Can anybody help me to understand this??
Avatar m tn So sorry to hear of the issues your daughter is having. What kind of doctor prescribed the Prozac? Medicating young people with these kinds of meds is very tricky. When it is decided by the parent(s) and doctor that a medication is the next step, it should be managed by a child/adolescent psychiatrist, because there are many special considerations.
Avatar f tn I personally do not agree with giving these kinds of meds to children who are so young. Often times, the meds work in opposite ways in young children, sometimes making the issues worse. What other methods have you used to help treat his issues? Obviously therapy...what kind of therapy, and how long did he go to sessions? Have you tried any kind of behavioral modification techniques (if there are behavioral issues)? Is his school involved? What kind of evaluations has he had?
Avatar f tn About 8weeks ago Idecided to taper off Cymbalta as have felt that the medication seems to worsen my symptoms as well as making me extremely tired - I could sleep up to 16hrs a day which is not good with 2 young children. I have been referred to a Phsyciatrist and he has prescribed me with Prozac starting with 20mg and working up to 40mg, but dilemma is whether to take them or not.
Avatar n tn I spoke with my pschy this week and he has given a weaning program that includes Prozac. Week 1 Paxil 20mg + Prozac 10mg Week 2 Paxil 15mg + Prozac 20mg Week 3 Paxil 10mg + Prozac 20mg Week 4 Paxil 5mg + Prozac 20mg Week 5 Stop Paxil stay on 20mg Prozac I am so worried about this, probably because I already feel bad. Has anyone ever done this type of withdrawl program before? On top of that I take Xanax .
Avatar n tn I have been on 20mg of prozac scince may of 2006. 5 weeks ago I decided to taper off taking 20mg and 10mg on alternating days. I was fine until about 3 days ago. now I have uncontrollable crying, a creepy crawling sensation and find my self having a lump in throat and having trouble breathing. I saw a hollistic doctor and he said it is withdrawl symptoms. i was under the impression that prozac isnt that bad especially at such a low dosage. can anyone tell me how long this will last.
459325 tn?1274758674 I do know of children as young as four years of age on liquid Prozac BUT that is in combination with intervention procedures. If your pediatrician prescribes medication without any therapy and/or intervention, then your doctor is not well versed in today's treatment of anxiety. Most begin with intervention practices with young children and if the child is unable to comply, then medication is introduced (this is usually after a period of several months).
603015 tn?1329866573 anyone else have experience with young children with bipolar. My daughter has not been diagnosed as bipolar yet, they have just said they are one step closer to that diagnosis. She is very fragile at the moment and her mood can change dramatically at any point and her doctor cannot see her as he is away sick.
Avatar m tn states that Prozac may increase suicidal ideation in children and young adults, but there is no mention of that occurring in the the elderly. Clonidine is not normally prescribed to treat depression. It is primarily used to control blood pressure. It has a number of other uses. I wish your father well.

132578 tn?1189759437 You know, many of us are of the same generation and as follows, many of you, like myself have teenage children or they will be soon. Many of us also contacted HCV through intravenous drug use when we weren't much more than teenagers ourselves. I have always had a zero tolerance drug use policy in my house not Only in practice but in the way discuss illicit drug use and the way that it destroys people's lives.
Avatar n tn What else was tried? These meds are pretty hard to take for adults, but for young children with still undeveloped brains, they were never approved for use. Now, it's perfectly legal to use them, and for some, it's the only thing that works, but that's why I'm asking, what else did you try first? It should have been everything you can think of.
172826 tn?1423426556 In the 21st Century, it is noticable that instead of identifying the cause, doctors and psychologists believe that treating children and youth’s symptoms with powerful medications such as Prozac, Luvox, Paxil and Zoloft, who all belong to the class of drugs better known as Selective Seretonin Reuptake Inhibitors(SSRI).
719785 tn?1232905118 try a new psychiatrist asap,,,,,I believe you need to ask the psych if theres any truth to the theory that antidepressant s particularly prozac are dangerous for young teens causing suicide.
Avatar n tn OCD is a serious anxiety disorder and one of the more difficult to treat. Liquid Prozac (an SSRI) would not be unheard of to treat a child as young as your grandson. However, if the parents are uncomfortable with this method of treatment, I might suggest that they request a referral to a medical specialist with experience in anxiety disorders as a child psychiatrist or a child neurologist. By the way, pulling out one's hair is called Trichotillomania - another anxiety disorder.
Avatar n tn I have three young children and being a mom is all I ever wanted to be. I have recently decided to become a foster parent. Me and my husband hope to adopt a little girl, through the foster care system. Will this go against me in my application to become a foster mother?
Avatar n tn Study showed that there are response rates of 61 to 100 percent with ECT in adolescents and children. ECT is used in children with refractory depression, mania, schizophrenia etc. ECT treatment can be done only at the doctor's recommendation and it requires consent from parents. You may want to try on different antidepressants before opting for ECT. Sincerely HFHS-M.D.
Avatar n tn Antidepressants are notorious for killing it not to mention the exhaustion from caring for 3 young children. Tell your doctor about this and ask your gyno to run a hormone panel for starters.

Avatar n tn Dear Amy, Juvenile onset Bipolar Disorder can be difficult to diagnose, but does require some form of mood stabilizing medication. Often with young children the type of mood stabilizer that is preferred is one of the anti-seizure drugs. Behavior management will need to be part of the treatment plan one way or the other. Your son should be in therapy with a child mental health clinician who can also be a resource to you. This person can collaborate with the prescribing psychiatrist.
Avatar n tn this and the Prozac made her extremely hyper, crying, writing on walls (normally would not touch a marker or crayon), EVERYTHING HAS GERMS TO HER. The psychiatrist says she will not prescribe her any more antidepressants because of her reaction to the Zoloft and the Prozac. These are the only 2 antidepressants she has tried. She has been diagnosed with EXTREME OCD. This all started her 1st day of Kindergarten (she was then 4 years old). PLEASE HELP I AM VERY VERY WORRIED ABOUT HER.
315737 tn?1407302597 I'm a 51 year old adult who never got any help when I was actually a child or even young adult. My life was a series of complete tragedies. Out of sheer determination i pulled myself together and have struggled for years and years to make some kind of life. Still I end up encountering traumatic events because of my problems. I can't say if I am autistic (moderately), aspergers, severe ADHD, or whatever else. Have seen a psychiatrist and taken prozac for the last 15 years.
Avatar m tn Nicholas has 58, a very low number that means in addition to his six HIV meds he has to take meds to prevent other kinds of infections. Add in Prozac for recurrent depression and a multivitamin, and Nicholas takes 16 pills a day--nine in the morning and seven at night. The week we first talked, Nicholas, a hairstylist, was preparing to start managing the front desk of a Berkeley, Calif.
Avatar n tn Hello, I am confused over what to do next. About 11 months ago I started getting light-headed and seen my doc he said it was bending over too fast but the symptoms got worse and more frequent. Then I started having chest pains and went to the E.R. they could find nothing wrong. the same thing happened 3-4 times and they sent a neurologist in to see me, he asked me five questions and diagnosed me with pannic attack and sent me to see a (shrink) doc.
Avatar n tn Sorry, wish I could help, but have no experience with children...a tough decision, my bias is against medications in children this young, but there are special and appropriate might consider getting a second expert opinion from a child psychiatrist to help you make the decision....
Avatar f tn The new data raises serious questions about how doctors are making diagnoses and why they are prescribing powerful drugs that have not been fully evaluated for safety or efficacy in such young children. Unsurprisingly, Ritalin, given to tens of thousands of school-age kids to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), topped the preschoolers' list. But ADHD can be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to diagnose with any confidence in kids younger than 5.

Avatar f tn I know I'm fatigued because I have three young children and I often feel overwhelmed. My parents and the doctor have suggested I try Prozac and I just started it. But there is this fear...what if I'm missing something? What if something is really happening to me and I don't catch it? What if I never feel better already? Does it sound like anxiety or something else?
