Common Questions and Answers about Prozac for ocd in children

prozac

Avatar f tn Does anyone have these same symptoms with child on Prozac. By the way the Prozac is helping the OCD. This discussion is related to My 7 year old is having disturbing thoughts...
Avatar n tn OCD is a serious anxiety disorder and one of the more difficult to treat. Liquid Prozac (an SSRI) would not be unheard of to treat a child as young as your grandson. However, if the parents are uncomfortable with this method of treatment, I might suggest that they request a referral to a medical specialist with experience in anxiety disorders as a child psychiatrist or a child neurologist. By the way, pulling out one's hair is called Trichotillomania - another anxiety disorder.
Avatar f tn 5 months I took klonopin sparingly and Prozac. I stayed on Prozac for my entire second pregnancy. My oldest son is fine. My younger son has ADHD but so do I as well as my husband so I don't think it came from the Prozac. Do a bit of research as far as studies go. When I had my kids, there were no studies. There wasn't even the Internet I don't think. I guess what I'm saying is you can have your sanity as well as children.
Avatar f tn I take Prozac for OCD. I have had OCD for many years but just started taking Prozac in October. I have gradually noticed a difference and usually for the better but still have times when I seem like I'm slipping back again. I have also noticed that I have times elevated mood, which is great....lol....but it's almost too elevated....lol. Anyway hope that you find the medication thats right for you. Oh.by the way I take 30mg a day.
Avatar n tn We met with a child psychiatrist and gave us the diagnosis but also said she had OCD and prescribed Prozac for her(about 1/4 tsp every day). I am concerned about putting her on meds but also feel horrible for her and her tantrums have been unbearable (stemming from the obsessions) for our entire family. Is meds for this along with therapies for the other autism issues the right thing or should i think twice about putting her on meds?
Avatar m tn So I researched about the natural treatments and have been taking the following supplements for my OCD in the given amounts and have seen improvement in the way my brain handles irrational fears- Vitamin B6- 40mg/day Vitamin B12-1mg/day Folic acid-1.6 mg/day Vitamin D3- 60K UI powder sachet/week Ashwagandha(Withania Somnifera)- 500mg/day Cod Liver Oil(Omega 3)- 1.2g/day Turmeric with black pepper- 1 Teaspoon/day The question is, for how long should I take these? P.S.
Avatar n tn has prescribed him Celexa for the OCD/Anxiety disorder. I have read that this medication is not recommended in children. Is it safe for him to take this medication? Or is there anywhere I can look for information on the use of this medication in children?
581310 tn?1253029550 What anti depressant do you think would be good for anxiety and ocd? Also, I have noticed since being on the prozac that my hands are always shaky.
Avatar n tn I have taken prozac off and on for 20 years. This last reason I started taking prozac was because my hubby was going to Iraq and I started my checking and worrying about him. He is back now and I have weened myself off again of prozac and I have this awful headache that wont go away. I have had the headache for 4 days now. I have weened myself off plenty of times and never felt like this.
Avatar f tn t think that it is prescribed as much for OCD as the SSRIs but it does seem to work for me. I have not gained a bunch of weight and it doesn't kill a person's sex drive like the others do. Maybe worth a discussion with your prescribing doctor.
Avatar n tn I would give luvox a go, it will knock you on your arse at first its strong stuff, but it will remove thoughts and anxiety, its probably the drug of choice for OCD in my experience
1665434 tn?1365238898 i have unwanted thoughts and i was gaving prozac for this 4 weeks ago i feel worst than ever my anxiesty and depression is got very bad is it normal to feel like this when starting a ssri drug our should i go bad to my docyor or wait a few weeks more
Avatar m tn Hi there. I'm not the best person to answer this question. I have taken Prozac with success in the past. Currently I take a different drug. BUT I also take folic acid to counter the effects of methotrexate for RA and I don't feel it has had any effect on making my OCD worse. Honestly, over the counter medication I have not had much success with.
Avatar n tn I was also told to eat turkey for L Tryptophan. Do you think this is an appropiate treatment for ocd? I had taken an SSRI called Prozac before but I was not able to tolerate it as they used to cause some pressure in my head so my doctor had told me to stop taking the pills. Does Cognitive Behavioral Therapy help ?
Avatar f tn Wow! I have to say how nice it is to know you are not a freak and that other people have this horrible problem. I can go back as far as 7 years of age and remember having anxiety, It's so sad to think a child would have to deal with such a thing. I now take Lexapro and feel alot better. Not 100% but I guess as good as it's gonna get for me. I recently noticed alot of anxiety signs in my 9 year old daughter. It's apparently something you can pass on to your children.
Avatar n tn Hi ;) What did the doctor diagnose you with? OCD? If it is OCD, i suggest starting with prozac. It has the least side effects of the the SSRIs and it also has a really long half life, which means after it builds up in your system (about a month to 6 weeks) It will continue to be released into your sytem for about 6 days after your last pill. So side effects coming off are very few. It is a gradual thing.
Avatar m tn Usually, there is more time inbetween dosage increases, but everyone is different, and your dr. knows you the best. The typical range of Prozac for an adult with OCD is about 80 mg, anywhere from 60 to 100 plus.
Avatar m tn ). A combination of all of these things have helped me but everything bed experiences are different.
Avatar n tn t even FDA approved to use for children and trust me there is a reason for that. We are seeing it first hand weaning my son who was just diagnosed with PANDAS off it. I am speaking from experience and again if you suspect your child has PANDAS good chance is they may not have any of the diagnosis that the doctor is using the meds to treat. Pandas children should be treated with antibiotics and Aleve. I have one of the best PANDAS doctors out there.
Avatar m tn I then stayed on Prozac in between my children and the entire time I was pregnant with my second son. I didn't breast feed either one of them because of the meds in my body. My children are 18 and 16 and so back then there really wasn't a lot of research about these meds and pregnancy. The idea during the first pregnancy was to make it to the 3 month mark because prior to that is when the baby is forming everything.
Avatar f tn My question is not abt me, its abt my husband who is suffering from sexual ocd from i donno may b for 20+ years. he is always watching porns in his spare time, which is almost more than 10 hrs a day. or he talks dirty to some woman online and keeps on touching himslf. he neglects his responsibilities. he has started considering me an enemy as i try to tell him the truth. i talked to a psychiatrist abt all this and he diagnosed him with sexual ocd.
Avatar m tn thank you dear for your time and good advice but i have no hope of recovery i want another life i am stuck really stuck there are no road in desert alone helpless and hopless i lost every thing my job my feature ....................................................................................................................................................................................................
Avatar f tn I'm new to posting, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about this. I've been taking St. John's Wort for almost 3 years and it does help some. It really helps me sleep and keeps me from getting as moody. I am a 42 year old female, so I think it helps smooth out the hormone symptoms, too. But, I do have ocd, since my early teens. In a way, I think it's not that severe, but it could be that I'm just used to it.
Avatar n tn In fact, it would be quite unusual for a child of that age to be diagnosed with OCD. You are correct in thinking that the evaluation should be accomplished by a child psychiatrist.
Avatar m tn I now take Wellbutrin instead and it seems to be working well. However, I need something for OCD. The Prozac used to address OCD but does not appear to work anymore. My doctor wants me to continue prozac but I have serious doubts. Is there a waiting period where in fact the tolerance that I have built up may go away and render the drug useful once again.
