89559 tn?1234880265 The principle of the procedure is that the Tc99m-sestamibi is absorbed at a greater rate in a hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland than in a normal parathyroid gland. This is dependent on several histologic features within the abnormal parathyroid gland itelf.
Avatar f tn I had a parathyroid gland removed in February after blood tests showed an elevated pth and calcium level. My calcium and pth returned to normal immediately. Last week, new blood tests showed a normal calcium level and an Intact PTH of 152.9 (14-72). The lab report says this indicates secondary hyperparathyroidism. My research shows this typicslly occurs when calcium levels are low. My level is normal. Other abnormal lab values: Creatinine 1.2 (.6-1.0) CGFR.
696393 tn?1254429207 Seems this forum is mostly about thyroid problems, understandably. But, we DO have patients with PARATHYROID disorders. I am hypothyroid, so yes, I have thyroid issues as well...that is being treated successfully with levothyroxine, low dose of 25mcg. My problem, and I'm not getting responses by posting daily, so I'm guessing there are NOT ALOT of parathyroid patients out there: HIGH PTH of between 323 and 878 for 2+ years now...NORMAL CALCIUM (9.2)...
400667 tn?1203744543 When she saw this surgeon he was saying that its very necessary to make sure that she gets plenty of calcium following surgery because its common that once the thyroid is removed that your body does not produce enough calcium. This is where the cofusion comes in, I read about the Parathyroid Gland last night. The following is what I read. "The sole purpose of the parathyroid glands is to control calcium within the blood in a very tight range between 8.5 and 10.5.
Avatar f tn I have many of the symptoms of parathyroid disease but since my calcium is normal, my endocrinologist and urologist do not think this is the case. I've had a 24 hour urine test and that came back with everything within the normal range. I should mention that all of this started 4 years ago and before that I'd never had a kidney stone or any other symptoms.
393685 tn?1425812522 Someone posted on this board a week or so back that they knew someone who had a parathyroid gland moved during a TT and implanted into her wrist. Weird, but possible, I guess. How to maintain healthy parathyroids or avoid damaging them is not discussed in the link I provided. I hope someone comes along and explains things in more detail, because I'm too lazy to google until I understand how they continue to function attached to an ablated thyroid.
Avatar n tn It is possible to have an extra parathyroid gland which can cause problems with calcium levels. My sister and nephew had a fifth parathyroid gland, however the problems they had are supposed to be family inherited and rare.
Avatar n tn Now my blood work shows. Normal parathyroid, low hypoparathyroidism and high primary, secondary, tertiary hyerparathyroidism , low hypercalcemia. calcium is 9.0.
Avatar m tn My mother has hyperparathyroidism. She is having a second operation on a parathyroid gland. She has had one removed already. The one which was removed had a benign tumour on it and they believe a second one may as well. Her PTH is still very high and her calcium varies between high and normal but is usually high. She is 70 and seems to be strongly and adversely affected by the PTH and Calcium imbalance. She is on Nexium, Prozac and takes Advil daily.
675329 tn?1297288378 he says this will cure this problem. do you mean another parathyroid gland has another adenoma on it. how will they know. can i have surgery to remove thyroid nodule if i need another surgery to remove parathyroid gland with adenoma on it.
Avatar f tn Mildly thickened measuring 4mm thickness Impression; Very heterogeneous thyroid echotexture with tiny abnormalities in the thyroid gland. The nodule seen inferior to the left lobe on the current examination was not seen previously and may represent a lymp node or parathyroid gland!!!! Had some lab work come back today tsh again is not gone down never been normal in the last 6 months 24.67 and my vit.
Avatar m tn There are four parathyroid glands behind the thyroid gland. Occasionally an extra parathyroid can be elsewhere in the neck. You can have a Sestamibi Technetium scan to see possible enlarged parathyroid glands or adenoma. The nature of the mass in the parotid salivary gland should be cleared up. A malignant tumor can also cause high calcium.
Avatar m tn Hyperparathyroidism can be caused by one of the parathyroid glands developing a tumor. If this is the case, removal of the one parathyroid gland can solve the problem, and parathyroid function will most likely return to normal. Left untreated your bone density will become thin, thus the reason for a bone density scan. I do not know if the arm pain is related or not.
Avatar n tn The parathyroid glands are small endocrine glands in the neck that produce parathyroid hormone. Humans have four parathyroid glands, which are usually located behind the thyroid gland, and, in rare cases, within the thyroid gland or in the chest. Parathyroid glands control the amount of calcium in the blood and within the bones.
Avatar n tn HI, This is a great question..My surgeon did an ultrasound...however I think that was mainly to check the Thyroid. He said he could see something on the parathyroids, but then I was sent for the sestabami scan. I luckilly had only one gland affected,, initiallly he thought it might be two. . I believe the sestabami scan is what most doctors use.. not ultrasound alone.. The labs are how the diagnosis is made. but the scan can help pinpoint exactly which glands are involved..
Avatar f tn As I understand, that parathyroid gland was producing 10 times as much PTH as normal, causing the other three to basically go dormant. Even with that her calcium was only showing around 10.1 and occasionally a bit higher. Not trying to alarm you, just trying to encourage you to make sure all is well there.
317787 tn?1473358451 Hi Dee...A parathyroid adenoma is a benign tumor... the fact that it's ectopic means that it's not in a normal position. The parathyroids are, typically, located behind the thyroid gland and they control the use of calcium. An adenoma leeches calcium from your bones, which accounts for the high blood calcium levels. Ectopic parathyroids can be located further up in the neck or down in the chest. You can find more information here: http://www.parathyroid.com/parathyroid-adenoma.
Avatar n tn I still have 60 lbs to my goal weight (which is at the high end of normal on the height/weight charts). I have a personal trainer and workout at the gym 12-15 hours per week as well as eating a clean, balanced diet. Anyway, once my weight loss plateaued I started having other medical issues like kidney stones and a-fib.
Avatar f tn I have had a dexa scan lately, which was normal, also a full body x-ray, a full body nuclear bone scan, a nuclear parathyroid scan. Apart from the parathyroid scan, all the others were normal. I wish they would start me on meds for this, but I think I am a bit of a puzzle, as my symptoms do not all add up. Many thanks for your interest.
675329 tn?1297288378 i had this condition in 1991 which i had surgery to remove one parathyroid gland with adenoma on it. can this happen again. does my thyroid nodule have anything to do with this. i am taking vit d3 1000 mg daily for low vit d level which i started last fall. vit d level still low but higher than it was. thank you for any help you can all give me.
Avatar f tn It can occur due to low Parathyroid Hormone (PTH), inability to form active PTH and inability of kidneys to respond to PTH. Low PTH usually is a complication of damage to parathyroid gland following thyroid surgery or neck surgery or any damage to gland for any reason. Inability to form active PTH is either acquired or congenital. Acquired form is generally due to an autoimmune disorder in which the body reacts against its own parathyroid cells.
Avatar m tn My pain episodes were from an elevated blood calcium level...this was caused by a parathyroid gland having a noncancerous tumor on it..After the tumor was removed, everything returned to normal and the pain is now gone...
Avatar f tn Hi All, I"m wondering if anyone else was checked to see whether they had primary, as opposed to secondary, hyperparathyroidism on recheck. I've had some problems tolerating high doses of both D2 and D3 -- a possible explanation is that I'm so thin my body lacks fat storage space and the doses are simply too high. Another explanation is that I might have primary hyperparathyroidism caused by an adenoma or enlarged parathyroid gland.
