Avatar f tn I have been told that if something has over 5 grams of fiber to subtract it from the total carbs. Does anyone else do this? And if so for the drs reference should I record the total number of the number of carbs minus the fiber? Thoughts? Thank you!

I went for a few years totally avoiding carbs and I lost weight! I ended up going through a bit of depression and started not caring about weight gain. Gained about 10 kilo's Now I'm on a diet and having some carbs. I feel much fuller and healthier for introducing it to my diet. I'm still losing weight. Slowly though because I am type 1 diabetic.

Avatar f tn simple carbs are those found in sugary foods, white breads and regular pasta, sodas, etc. Simple carbs are broken down quickly and if not used right away for energy, will be stored as fat. These are the ones that should be avoided. Complex carbs are those found in vegetables, most fruits and whole grains. Complex carbs are the dietary fiber we need, to fill us up. These take longer to break down and are not absorbed, as fat.
Avatar f tn Reduce the carbs you eat. I took out bread as this started to cause me trouble and replaced with homemade alternatives. One of which was banana pancakes made with ground down almond instead of flour. Delicious!

The type of diabetic diet I'm on, if there's 5g of fiber or more in a food item, the grams of fiber get subtracted from the total amount of carbs in the food. For instance, fiberOne cereal has 13g fiber and 45g carbs.
7712902 tn?1393734882 s healthy carbs because it has fiber and great vitamins but you must take in to consideration they are still Carbohydrates and your body treats all simple carbs the same. 1 apple yields about 20-30 carbs, a banana is about 30+, and most fruits are similar. The only true difference between a piece of fruit and table sugar is fiber and vitamins as far as your body is concerned.
Avatar n tn Hi Lurius, Net carbs are getting lots of attention these days because of all the Atkins dieters, but it's actually long been an important concept for diabetics who do carbohydrate "counting" and then try to match our insulin to the amount of carbos we're eating. Foods that have carbos typically have a combination of carbos that we can metabolize (and therefore will affect our BG) and those that we can't (fiber). We subtract fiber from total carbs to get net carbs.

Avatar n tn I also keep a daily calorie journal and have been eating around 900 calories/day but thats total not net calories. Net calories total around 400-600/day depending how hard I work out that day. I stick to a strict diet of lean meat, whole wheats, vegetables and fat free dairy products. YET, I've GAINED one lb and haven't lost any weight. I don't see any results and my jeans are still tight. I stick strictly to working out and my diet plan.

Avatar n tn It says I should be consuming about 130 carbs but it seems to me so many foods contain carbs. An apple and banana are both things I thought was good but they contain carbs that add to my 130. Carrots is another snack I wanted to eat and also has about 10 g.
Avatar f tn are you eating carbs or protein? maybe try a smaller amount of food and keeping track of your calories? I've read that protein can help when your feeling sick. If your not getting any exercise, maybe try walking. I am overweight to start with so I am very concerned about gaining to much weight. This is the approach I am planning on taking. I am also going to see what else I can find out about the GD diet, as I am concerned about getting GD, so I would prefer to proactive about things.
