Propranolol for severe hemangiomas of infancy

Common Questions and Answers about Propranolol for severe hemangiomas of infancy

Avatar f tn In infants, the hemangiomas that are treated with beta-blockers are hemangiomas in the fatty layer of the skin of the face NOT liver hemangiomas. Beta-blockers have been shown to significantly suppress large hemangiomas, although the exact mechanism remains unclear. The use of beta blockers currently requires initial ICU monitoring, and is generally restricted to significant steroid-resistant hemangiomas that are life or vision threatening, or likely to otherwise cause severe facial deformity.
Avatar f tn Hi, A hemangioma of infancy is a benign tumor of endothelial cells. They are the most common tumor in infancy and are connected to the circulatory system and filled with blood. In most cases, hemangiomas will disappear over time, leaving minimal or no visible marks. Talk to you doctor about this on your next follow-up for proper evaluation. Medical treatment may be done but in majority of cases, they will resolve on their own. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar f tn A hemangioma is a benign self involuting tumour of endothelial cells (the cells that line blood vessels) Haemangiomas of infancy They are connected to the circulatory system and filled with blood. The appearance depends on location. If they are on the surface of the skin they look like a ripe strawberry, if they are just under the skin they present as a bluish swelling. Sometimes they grow in internal organs such as the liver or larynx. In most cases, hemangiomas will disappear over time.
Avatar f tn My DD was born a month ago with a small mark on her nose tip. More alarmingly, though, was the shape of her nose- the nose tip looks like a huge bulb, which sounds like a compound hemangioma (my older DD also has hemangiomas, so I know by the look that this is probably what my younger DD has). Is there anyone out there with experience with a nose tip hemangioma? Did you get it lasered? At what age does it get worse? Did anyone get surgery for their child?
Avatar f tn I am a 30 year old female that has suffered from depression, anxiety, OCD, and ADHD since childhood. I have been on at least 7 different medications over the years that have and have not worked for various symptoms; however, I can't find one that works for them all. I have been taking 50 mg of Zoloft for about 3 years and it works great for my depression and the best thing I've ever taken for my OCD, but my anxiety is worse than it has ever been.
Avatar f tn This has since resolved but has left the side of my knee numb. I am currently in the process of being worked up for MS and have had a brain MRI and MRI of the t-spine, c-spine and l-spine, all with and w/o contrast. The brain MRI was normal. However, the MRI of the t-spine showed multiple (5) large lesions at T1, T2, T5, T6, and T10. The radiologist states that these are "probable" hemangiomas.
Avatar f tn //www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15363434 Have you seen your mris? Are the hemangiomas causing compression of the spinal cord? Your neurologist should be able to comment on that. Best wishes as you get this sorted out!
Avatar n tn Very large hemangiomas can cause symptoms such as pain, nausea, or enlargement of the liver. Rarely, larger hemangiomas can rupture, causing severe pain and bleeding into the abdomen. There is usually no contraindication to other medications and it is best that you talk to your doctor about this also for proper management. Take care and do keep us posted.
1243620 tn?1274790697 I've used propranolol for over 10 years and it works amazingly well for me. I only take 10mg an hour before an important meeting etc (20mg for presentations or other situations where my anxiety feels worse) and it takes away the nasty physical symptoms (shaking and a racing heart for me). I recently started a new job and it helps so much to feel calmer while I settle in. Sometimes I only need 5mg so I cut the tablet in half.

Avatar m tn These lesions are usually incidental findings during imaging studies of the abdomen performed for other reasons. The indication for surgical resection of these lesions remains controversial. METHODS: Records of patients referred for evaluation of radiologically and/or histopathologically proven liver hemangiomas, from June 1991 to February 2006, were retrospectively analyzed. Reason for referral, results of imaging studies, and surgical treatment and outcome were reviewed.
Avatar m tn I used to take a slow-release Propranolol 80 mg every day, which caused severe tiredness and extreme fatigue, to the point that I was not able to think straight and sometimes could not even get out of bed. Apparently, Propranolol also inhibits the ability for you to burn fat, not to mention gastrointestinal issues. Depression is also significantly higher when taking Propranolol.
Avatar n tn Large hemangiomas can leave visible skin changes secondary to severe stretching of the skin or damage to surface texture. The mainstay of treatment is oral corticosteroid therapy. Other drugs such as interferon or vincristine are sometimes considered if the corticosteroids do not work. If this fails, surgical removal often becomes necessary.
Avatar n tn sometimes Tenex is also used in conjunction with stimulants to help control ADHD symptoms....first I have heard of inderal (brand name for propranolol) being used but makes sense...Always to remember to ask your doctor any questions about your meds and health care...the only stupid questions are the ones not asked....Also beta blockers are also given to help control migraines to regulate fluxs in BP...not because too high but slight changes can trigger migraines...
Avatar f tn located behind my left eye. recently i have been getting really sharp, shooting pains on the left side of my head. so severe that i get real dizzy and just need to stay put for a few seconds. it throbs, goes away for about 2 hours then comes back but when it hits, it hits hard. is this related to my hemangioma? or is it just a typical migraine?
Avatar m tn 8 inch by .6 inch and is located in the right lobe of your liver. Hemangiomas are basically tangled up blood vessels and in the vast majority of case are left untreated and they cause no harm. Hemangiomas do not become cancerous. Your doctor must be sure that the SOL (space occupying lesion) is in fact a hemangioma and not a malignant tumor. Frequently follow up tests such as a MRI or CT scan are sometimes ordered to confirm the diagnosis.
Avatar f tn I also do take the beta-blocker pindolol which has kept my BP at 125/70 for years. Shrink says very occasional and use of propranolol on top of pindolol should not be a problem but I still have concerns which I will run by my GP. I actually did receive a call from my pharmacy pointing out the risk of a low BP problem. So...I am wondering if anyone has used propranolol or has an educated opinion on both its use in ED and possible interactions.
Avatar n tn I have been suffering with severe thoracic back pain for over a year now, also lumbar back pain for 5 years. I am 38 and am sick of suffering. I have been told I have a L5-S1 disc desiccation with diminution in disc height relative to the remaining levles, small generalized disc bulge, however they say that is common and probably not a sourse of my low back pain? My main concern is lesions that they found on MRI.
Avatar f tn Because of my symptoms, my doctor is ruling out physical causes before diagnosing it as stress (which will be his diagnosis if my daily adrenaline levels turn out to be high). He put me on Propranolol for a month for anxiety and my other issues.
Avatar n tn I have been researching liver hemangiomas since they told me this a couple of days ago and there are alot of pictures of hemangiomas on catscans on the internet. Also my mother died of liver cancer 3 yrs ago and they never did find out where the primary cancer started from. Should I try to get them to do more test to make sure that it is a hemangioma and not cancer?
4155003 tn?1351614311 Regular intranasal use (snorting) of cocaine, for example, can lead to loss of the sense of smell; nosebleeds; problems with swallowing; hoarseness; and a chronically runny nose. Ingesting cocaine can cause severe bowel gangrene as a result of reduced blood flow. Injecting cocaine can bring about severe allergic reactions and increased risk for contracting HIV/AIDS and other blood-borne diseases. Binge-patterned cocaine use may lead to irritability, restlessness, and anxiety.
