1569750 tn?1295589154 I spoke to my pharmacist and doctor months ago about the constipation. It was so bad I was going 5 and 6 days at a time without going. I was told that stool softeners are safe to use, as well as suppostories if needed. If I take a stool softener with my prenatal, I'm a little constipated but that's it. My doctor also told me though that this late in the game, it's okay to cut back on the prenatals because it's early in the pregnancy when it has the most benefits for the baby.
566175 tn?1278430472 I take this two step vitamin with DHA being a second step, CVS brand. No stool softener though. I think to get a stool softener you need prescription vitamins.
Avatar f tn Yes... my prenatal vitamins have a stool softener built in to overcome the constipation caused by the iron supplement. Now, I would contact your dr for a brand, dosage and directions for your situation.
5002615 tn?1366014009 When my doctor put me on additional iron she also predcribed stool softener.
Avatar n tn Ever since I started taking Prenatal vitamins I can't poop. What can I take to fix this?
Avatar f tn I actually recommend you asking your doctor if he/she can prescribe you a prescription prenatal vitamin. They contain a low dosage of stool softener and you will not have to deal with constipation due to the iron in the vitamin. They also tend to have each and every vitamin, mineral etc that you will need plus the perfect dosage. You wouldn't have to look for certain needed vitamins, most store bought prenatal vitamins actually do not have all the recommended vitamins, minerals etc.
Avatar f tn m 7w4d with my second and right after I found out I started taking OTC prenatal vitamins. Two days ago I had to stop taking them due to extreme constipation to the point of pains in my side and nausea and headaches right after taking them. I tried everything to deal with the constipation but nothing really helps and when I take them my face will feel like its on fire and I get dizzy even though I always eat first.
Avatar f tn I'm taking NatureMade prenatal vitamins that I bought from Costco. My ob said it's a good brand that have everything for pregnancy.
Avatar f tn You can ask your doctor for stool softeners. There are some prenatal vitamins that come with a stool softener. The vitamins I take have it, & it works. I'd talk to your doctor.
1958328 tn?1334727698 There are prenatal vitamins that have a gentle stool softener in them to help counteract the extra iron, or just the pregnancy in general. Or you can continue with the prenatals you are on and take a stool softener. Most of them are considered safe throughout pregnancy for the normal healthy pregnant woman. Ah...
282955 tn?1394730951 My doc actually gives me a prescription for my pre natal vitamins. They actually have a gentle stool softener in them to help counter-act the iron in the vitamins. I love them. Might want to ask your doc about them.

1571730 tn?1314725245 What Heather said is true your body will come to rely on those tablets and totally ruin your digestion. You need prenatal vitamins that come with a stool softner if possible as the Iron in the vitamins do cause constipation. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Thanks ladies. I'm not taking any prenatal vitamins. I'm gonna go to the doctors Tuesday.
Avatar f tn Maybe switch your prenatal. Drink more water, eat more fiber, and if your doctor okays a stool softener. I have this problem but I switched to a prenatal from whole foods and it's getting better.
359321 tn?1278268890 MY RE told me to use the prenatals at the pharmacy but someone just told me that they have heard horror stories about the over the counter prenatal vitamins, she said they do not include a stool softener so they make you really constipated as opposed to the prescribed. Is anyone taking the over the counter vitamins??
5577486 tn?1370263268 yeah. its your prenatal vitamins doing that to you.
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribed a prenatal that also includes a stool softener... I take it with dinner and never had any problems and I am highly sensitive to anything I ingest.
Avatar f tn My doctor has me taking iron twice daily plus my prenatal for anemia and she told me to use a stool softener/laxitive daily. I chose Colace and it did NOT work. I ended up in the hospital last weekend with impacted stool that had to be manually removed. What a nightmare o_O After all that my doctor recommended these brands: Miralax, Senokot or Milk of Magnesium. Good luck.
871965 tn?1241833146 Prescription and OTC prenatal vitamins are very comparable in vitamin/nutrient dosage, just be sure your folic acid is 1mg. I am on a prescription prenatal called PreNexa. It contains DHA and a stool softener. Most OTC prenatals do not contain these additives, you would have to purchase seperately. You can call an OB office to consult a prenatal nurse to see what prenatal vitamins they recommend, or ask your local pharmacist.
Avatar n tn A majority of the people alive were born without prenatal vitamins or ultrasounds or even gave birth at home.
Avatar f tn I am like that too....I took a colace stool softener and it helped the next day.

270512 tn?1333177636 Prenatal vitamins with iron cause some discomfort to alot of women (add in PIO and wham! traffic is blocked for miles!) ... a little tid bit I learned from a friend...take your vitamin with Orange Juice. The OJ helps break it down faster, causing less "discomfort". I tell you what...it works! HALLELUJAH!!!! Just wanted to let y'all know in case this happens to you....
