Avatar n tn Platelets are a type of blood cell that play an important role in blood clotting. Platelets are made in the bone marrow, and is the organ that produces all types of blood cells. The condition can develop when the bone marrow stops regulating its production of platelets and other blood cells, often as a result of a mutation or other type of injury to the marrow.

408795 tn?1324939275 The spleen stores red and white blood cells and platelets (fragment of cells that are used to clot blood). An enlarged spleen traps platelets lowering levels in the blood which can lead to the inability of blood to clot. This is called Thrombocytopenia and is common in people with cirrhosis. You don't necessarily have any physical symptoms with an enlarged spleen. Is there a better way to guide the progression of HepC than a liver biopsy?

Avatar m tn Platelet Count - Platelets are a part of the blood that are needed for blood clotting. Platelets migrate to the site of an injury where they "stick" to the injured site and help to develop a clot or scab to stop the bleeding. A normal platelet count is between 150,000 and 440,000. Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) can be caused by HIV infection itself or by certain drugs.
Avatar n tn Neupogen is given every day for 3 days, then test blood again in a few weeks. Neulasta lasts for 2 weeks, it is pegalated version of Neupogen. From what a few here have said, Neulasta has much worse sides than Neulasta. Try to get your dr. to give you these drugs instead of cutting tx drugs!
Avatar n tn My platelet count was 332. I got the blood test after a 14 hour fast. Is this something to be concerned about, if so, what should my next steps be and what could be the cause for it being so high? My triglycerides were 352. Do they go together in some way?
Avatar f tn My doctor said she is not that concerned since my platelet count falls just under the normal amount, and that she is going to have me take another blood test in a few weeks. I have read that being pregnant can cause your platelets to drop below the norm. I am 12+1. Anyone else?
Avatar f tn i was told around 4 months that i had low blood platelets. then was told they got worse wen i was 5 months im 6 1/2 months now and they are going to test it again. im scared they will be worse. if so i cant have an epidural! anyone else with this problem?
Avatar f tn Hi Becksta, Could you clarify your question because you mention both platelets and red blood cells in your post? (Red blood cells carry oxygenated blood to the body while platelets are pieces in the blood that stick together when you have a wound to create clots, so we're talking two different things.
Avatar n tn I have been with Hep C since 1979, did the interferon thing, didn't work, I discovered in the late 90"s that I have low blood platelets, anywhere from 22 to 44. I have recently tried prednisone (60mg) which didn't work,, the side effects where bad, so my doctor decided that I should have my spleen removed, I was to have surgery, but decided against it and have found a different doctor.
Avatar n tn I DID MY BLOOD TEST. THE REPORT SHOWS 1) PLATELETS 458 2) TOTAL WBC 6.7 WHAT DOES IT INDICATE?
Avatar f tn I went thru this with my daughter when she was 13 months old. We had to admit her to Vanderbilt childrens hospital, where they have to do differents blood test and do you know that with platelets so low she is considered a free bleeder. If she hits her head or anything on her body hard it can cause internal bleeding. If her pediatrician or dr is telling you this is nothing to be concerned with you need to get to another dr ASAP!!
Avatar f tn It usually happens because the test tube containing the sample for the CBC was not shaked properly (the test tube contains a small amount of heparin. After obtaining the blood sample, you're supposed to shake it to prevent the platelets from clumping together).
Avatar f tn I just found out that I am having low platelets count (142) at 28 weeks test. My OB has advised me to take another test around 34 weeks and she said that I Can't do anything to help the levels increase naturally. Anyone having/had this? And any piece of advice for raising the levels naturally?

Ast 81, Alt 99, platelets 45...His final test for HepC, after 6 months treatment will be done soon, but he told me that he has bad feeling about it...I told him, I believe that everything will be okay, but I am not sure... feel very sad and worried...all that struggle, hoping and money for that therapy.. don't know if he will be able to make that again...

Avatar m tn Sometimes clumping of platelets is caused by incorrect blood collection or the anticoagulant used. "Concerned about clumping platelets July 2003 "A patient regularly has clumping of her platelets on routine bloodwork," notes JOHN DAVIES, MD, of Calgary, AB, and asks, "Although her platelets appear normal on smear, could this be a sign of pathology, requiring further investigation?
2030686 tn?1351692148 Certain medications can reduce the number of platelets in your blood by confusing the immune system and causing it to destroy platelets. Examples include heparin, quinidine, quinine, sulfa-containing antibiotics, interferon, anticonvulsants and gold salts. Pregnancy. Being pregnant may cause mild thrombocytopenia. Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). In ITP, your body's immune system mistakenly identifies platelets as a threat and forms antibodies that attack them. Autoimmune diseases.
7510956 tn?1411675017 As the spleen enlarges, it traps more than a normal amount of platelets. (The amount of platelets in the bloodstream is thus reduced because the larger spleen traps more of them). The blood is frequently “shunted” around the liver to return to the heart by smaller vessels, which may become enlarged. In the stomach and esophagus these engorged blood vessels are termed “varices” and are at increased risk of bleeding, which is another major complication of cirrhosis.
Avatar m tn Do i need to worry about this? My PCP did a cbc and Platelet count came in at 131,000. He retook a month later, doing a "manual" platelet count test and it came in at 118,000. So now, he has me going to a Hematologist/Oncologist. Is this something potentially serious? I have always had hi trigycerides, they were running between 400-700, but now, on meds with change in diet, they are 180 and 220 the last two tests.
Avatar f tn My neuro sent a recent blood test report to this hematologist asking if he should do any specific testing around the giant platelets and the hematologist's office called me the next week for an appointment. I asked my GP what I should expect besides more blood tests and he said that I might also need a bone marrow biopsy. I am pretty sure this is not MS related but was wondering if anyone else here might have/had giant platelets.
