2 frame (124 lbs) but it ***** being hungry all the time and having extra weight! My doctor told me that weight gain is a side effect of Paxil so I am going to try Zoloft. I have an anxeity disorder that triggers OCD and Paxil has worked very very well and given me a great life since being on it. I figure I should try something different to see if it helps the weight gain and if Zoloft doesn't work, or help me to lose the weight then I will have to cut off the wine and go back on Paxil.
Sabrina, yes paxil,like all the other ssri's can cause weight gain. The medication that doesn't is wellbutrin, or if anxiety is the main symptom, klonopin. You should adjust to tiredness within a week, if not, then maybe the dose is too high for you. Re obesity, you have to learn how to stop stress eating, which is probably more difficult for you because of your anxiety. the best way to do that is to take the course at www.shrinkyourself.com, or consult a therapist.
He is now on Amiodarone, Asprin, Warfarin, Ramipril and Metoprolol for his heart. He has been on Paxil for several years. He has had two other jobs since Dollar General and has lost them both due to his every buddy is picking on me attitude. He is 55 years old and has worked his tail off without this problem all of his life. Could someone shed some light on this. Could the drugs that he is taking cause this behavioral changes.
Personally, I would not add these type of meds to Paxil unless you have not had any weight gain issues during your time on in. I prefer to add the class of medications such as Abilify to the SSRI's; Lexapro, Celexa, or Zoloft. I know that you stated that these did not work work for you in the past, however, when the second agent is added to them they become a very effective anti-anxiety/anti-depressant combinations.
Drink water before meals too, add a slice of lemon to make it go down easier. You will see weight loss if you make some life changes as listed above. A great book to get is Dr. Phil's 7 basics to weight loss (I think is the title). He knows what he's doing with that book. Good Luck and Happy Marriage to you in 17 months.
I have friends who lost weight on paxil with a strict diet and exercise program. But I also have friends on paxil who could not lose the weight no matter what they did. The weight will come off when you discontinue the medication - or switch to a medication that has less of a chance of causing weight gain (ie. Prozac). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood.
Some people complain about weight gain while on SSRIs like Paxil and others even complain about weight loss. What has been really helpful for me is ensuring that I watch what I eat and exercise regularly. Remember, quite often, or weight gain has more to do with our lifestyle than what we are taking sometimes in my experience. Do you exercise regularly and watch what you eat? Keep us posted!

I can understand your frustration at gaining weight while taking Paxil. I gained weight with a couple of the medications I took and had my doctor take me off of them.
I hope you stopped taking your medication without your doctors' permission.
The weight will come off as long as you maintain or start a healthy diet and exercise.
Most of the benzos do not cause weight gain, so you might talk to your doctor about one of them.
Now, sometimes combining wellbutrin with an ssri such as Paxil will be done because that can help with the weight gain and sexual dysfunction problems, but quitting Paxil to go on wellbutrin is not likely to help with anxiety -- depression, maybe, but not anxiety because, again, wellbutrin is very stimulating. If this were me, I'd not take the Wellbutrin, stop the whole process, and get a psychiatrist before I proceeded further if your doc isn't one.
I am 54 yrs old now and I weight 200lbs, am on Lithium 900mg and Seroquel 300 mg and Paxil. All my doctors have denied weight gain from the medications and I do not understand that. This stuff just comes on like majic. When I started the Seroquel I immediately gained 20 lbs. YIKES!!! I admit I do not exercise like I used to before I was diagnosed. I am lucky to eat one meal a;day. Just not hungery. I am sure if I got on some exercise plan along with better eatting I could work my *** off.
I'm 19 and prescribed Paxil...I'm already over weight and have heard Paxil causes rapid weight gain..is this true and do you have a suggestion as to what I might ask my doctor to prescribe if not the Paxil??
If your concern is only the weight change factor just keep an eye on your weight and if you start to notice you that your gaining or losing call your doctor. The weight is one of the less serious side effects. But do your research on the Paxil and the dosage. Or nothing may happen at all the side effects vary from person to person. You may not have any side effects.
Getting off Paxil (if needed) is really no worse that stopping any other antidepressant.
Paxil is the one SSRI that people report the most weight gain with. This doesn't mean you will gain weight on Paxil. Everyone is different, but yes Paxil is notorious for weight gain side effects.
Yea, Paxil is a bad one for weight gain. Fair warning... If any doctor tries to put you on Remeron and weight is a concern for you then SAY NO WAY.
I have been on both at differnt times in the past. You want to talk about weight gain? OMG! Remeron makes Paxil look like a diet pill! Taking Remeron is like wanting to be fat.
Most important thing, taper off the Paxil very slowly, at your speed. Many doctors don't know how to do this, and might tell you the Prozac will just stop any problems stopping the Paxil but it probably won't. So that's the first thing. As for the weight, when I stopped Paxil I lost most of the weight I had gained pretty quickly, but how any other medication will affect you is unknown.
I am new to this particular forum...I was just prescribed Paxil 20 mg a day (take at night) for OCD, Anxiety, PTSD etc. I have only been on it for 3 days. I have been ready more bad than good about the side effects; particularly the weight gain and the withdrawal symptoms. I will stop taking this medicine ASAP if I can a couple of lbs. Does anyone have any positive things to say about Paxil or any other anti-depressant. The doctor told me I may gain 1 lb in a yr.
