paxil and weight gain or loss

i always weighed between 135 and 140 and now im 162 and very unhappy every time i step on the scale its another pound or two im getting off it and i hope to see some weight loss within a week or two.

My big question is when are the doctors going to stop telling everyone that they do not gain weight on antidepressants, I have been on lexapro now for 2 yrs, and have gained 25 lbs, I watch what I eat exercise, dance, etc... and the weight will NOT come off. My doctor tells me well you are are at the age of premenopause and at that age, that you are going to gain weight, well I am getting tired of hearing it.

Some people complain about weight gain while on SSRIs like Paxil and others even complain about weight loss. What has been really helpful for me is ensuring that I watch what I eat and exercise regularly. Remember, quite often, or weight gain has more to do with our lifestyle than what we are taking sometimes in my experience. Do you exercise regularly and watch what you eat? Keep us posted!

m currently on Paxil and Xanax, and have been experiencing a complete loss of appetite most days. I started eating a few days ago, but I'm only on 10mg a day for the Paxil. It takes a while for stuff to kick in, but this med has made me lose 10 lbs in 2 weeks. When I was 14 (I'm now 25) I was put on Celexa, and I was on it for a couple of years. I remember the Dr. increased my dosage a few times, and eventually I felt like a zombie. And YES I did gain weight.

Sabrina, yes paxil,like all the other ssri's can cause weight gain. The medication that doesn't is wellbutrin, or if anxiety is the main symptom, klonopin. You should adjust to tiredness within a week, if not, then maybe the dose is too high for you. Re obesity, you have to learn how to stop stress eating, which is probably more difficult for you because of your anxiety. the best way to do that is to take the course at www.shrinkyourself.com, or consult a therapist.

I am now off Paxil for 1.5 months and my anxiety is coming back, and havent lost any of the weight either. I need to go back on Paxil but need to find a way to battle the weight gain. I have heard combining Wellbutrin can help with maintaining but I have read more success stories with Topamax.

Then I went off of it a year later because of the weight gain. I am now back on it but my doctor put me on 20mg and I do not have the increase in appetite i don't know why this is, but i am very happy with it!! maybe try going up to 20?

People taking SSRIs like Lexapro can complain about weight gain; and there are many that complain about weight loss. Remember, that anxiety can often lead to depression which in itself can cause weight gain for a viarity of reasons. I actually lost weight while taking an SSRI, but I think it had to do a lot more with a normal exercise routine and watching what I ate.

Has anyone had any success with losing weight while on these antidepressants? Has anyone tried Metformin for weight loss?

I was told by my doctor that the Zoloft should not make you gain weight, I had a similar situation with the Paxil. I told my doctor that I was unhappy with the weight gain that I had with Paxil. And she told to try the Zoloft instead. However that was almost four years ago, and I was not on the Zoloft nearly as long as I was with the Paxil. But it did help me to get most of the weight I gained off!! Good luck!

Keep in mind you could gain weight on Zoloft or any ssri, and your weight gain on Paxil has been minimal -- I gained 50 pounds over several years on it. And be careful going off it, it can be difficult. Do it slowly and carefully.

As I said before, it didn't increase my urge to eat a bit, and I still gained over 50 pounds on it. Weight gain, weight loss, just weird stuff. But I've been on a lot of Paxil sites, and most everyone gained a lot of weight on it. Personally, can't live without my exercise, not that it's done anything to help my anxiety. Gained 50 pounds on Paxil, lost most when I went off but only because withdrawal drove me so crazy I couldn't eat. Now on Lexapro, gaining weight again. SSRIs imo do have a rep for weight gain, although they can vary from each person. I took Paxil and gained weight. And to this day I won't take any more SSRIs. I tried other SSRIs as well just to be sure and not be biased. I been reliant on Klonopin for years now. No more issues with Weight Gain.

The sexual side effects are fairly common. Much more common that the literature suggests. The weight gain is one I'd say is not rare, yet not extremely common either. I have done research about the side effects from taking Paxil but their website says weight gain is a possibility and mentions nothing about the loss of energy. I developed it 2 years ago, and slowly kept losing weight. Maybe the Paxil is just messing with my hernia and causing adverse effects. Who knows. I'm not supposed to have caffeine but I still drink coffee. I too didn't lose weight on tx. I was hoping I would drop 10 to 20 lbs but no such luck. I managed to maintain my weight and am over 1 yr post tx now and still trying to lose weight. I began AD's after TX (PAXIL) and started to experience weight gain. After a yr on the Paxil I weened myself off and am off of it now. Still battling the weight. Everyone is different... Paxil is not known to cause weight gain. In clinical trials, weight gain by people on Paxil was the same as for placebo, and therefore not deemed an adverse effect.
