I have been on Paxil for 8 months for panic attacks and the weight gain is getting so hard to deal with. I've decided to go off of it. Can anyone tell me if they lost the weight easily after going of it. Or possible suggest another anti anxiety med that doesn't have this particular side effect.

paxil caused me to gain 40 pounds which i was almost able to lose through hard exercise and diet but then got pregnant... just work out it will come off, but it may be a little stubborn.

I am not sure on what pills will cause weight gain and ones that won't but I am on citalopram and I have not gained any weight and since I started having anxiety problems I lost twenty pounds but I think thats because I just didn't feel like eating.

Paxil is notorious for weight gain. Gained 50 pounds on it myself. Also known for side effects and difficulty quitting. Try the Prozac. Save the Paxils and Effexors for last.

Keep in mind you could gain weight on Zoloft or any ssri, and your weight gain on Paxil has been minimal -- I gained 50 pounds over several years on it. And be careful going off it, it can be difficult. Do it slowly and carefully.

Sabrina, yes paxil,like all the other ssri's can cause weight gain. The medication that doesn't is wellbutrin, or if anxiety is the main symptom, klonopin. You should adjust to tiredness within a week, if not, then maybe the dose is too high for you. Unfortunately, the side of effects of going off Paxil are worse than the weight gain. I was weaned off by my psychiatrist four years ago and ended up in the hospital for a month. I immediately went back on it. Unfortunately for me it's a lose/lose situation.

Hi: I have general anxiety with a tendency towards social anxiety. I used to have panic attacks but haven't had one in a couple years. I also suffer with depression. What drug has helped you? I am now taking Klonopin for the anxiety and Prozac for depression. I would like to cut the Klonopin or at least cut down (now taking 1 mg/day). The Prozac isn't helping my depression at all and I have given it months to work.

I switched from Paxil 75mg, with no weight gain or appetite to Wellbutrin 300 XL with uncontrolled appetite and the inability to feel satiety after eating which has led to mild weight gain. Wellbutrin has been a nightmare for me this last year but I'm not willing to go back on Paxil and possibly subject myself to the torture of withdrawing from it again. If you choose to go back on it, you might try consulting a book called the Anti-Depressant Survival Guide by Hedaya -- it suggests dietary changes to help with this kind of side effect. It's the Paxil -- big weight gainer! All of these meds for depression can cause weight gain, and it has nothing to do with normal metabolism. I exercised a lot and didn't eat any more, and gained 50 pounds over a period of years. You'll see reports of it with any antidepressant. Be careful how you come off Pristiq -- packs a wallop of a withdrawal, so go it nice and slow and safe so you'll avoid that. After I came off Paxil, I did lose almost all the weight I gained on it, so the answer is probably yes, the weight will come off as mysteriously as it came on.

Yea, Paxil is a bad one for weight gain. Fair warning... If any doctor tries to put you on Remeron and weight is a concern for you then SAY NO WAY. I have been on both at differnt times in the past. You want to talk about weight gain? OMG! Remeron makes Paxil look like a diet pill! Taking Remeron is like wanting to be fat.

As far as weight gain I gained but it was due to other meds than the paxil at this time because when I took it several yrs b4 my kids I didnt gain any weight..For me the paxil has been a lifesaver and its been on the market several yrs now..So, it can be trusted alot more than these new meds that are comming out..It takes several days to start feeling the effects of the medication..You should be able to tell pretty quick if you are going to react good or bad to it...

Getting off Paxil (if needed) is really no worse that stopping any other antidepressant. Paxil is the one SSRI that people report the most weight gain with. This doesn't mean you will gain weight on Paxil. Everyone is different, but yes Paxil is notorious for weight gain side effects.
