Zoloft vs paxil weight gain

Common Questions and Answers about Zoloft vs paxil weight gain

paxil

Avatar n tn Keep in mind you could gain weight on Zoloft or any ssri, and your weight gain on Paxil has been minimal -- I gained 50 pounds over several years on it. And be careful going off it, it can be difficult. Do it slowly and carefully.
1473147 tn?1286917921 Zoloft causes weight gain just as much as Paxil. Go back on the med that works for you! Change doctors if they give you fuss.
527657 tn?1214051850 One of the biggest complaints by people on Paxil is weight gain. I've personally never been on it. I was on Zoloft years ago for several years, and had no issues with weight gain. Not to say it isn't possible...but it seems to be less common than with the Paxil for sure. Give it a try, right? It certainly can't hurt. And....lol....I'd rather be fat and anxiety-free if that's what it takes. LOL. Just a little funny. Seriously, tho....give it a shot....
Avatar f tn My old psysician did tell me about the weight gain with paxil so I could not do it, I tried but my anxiety was so high about the weight gain.. Its your choice and you really don't know which was is going to be the best for you but my advice would be to listen to your doctor. If that doesn't work then you can always try something else. I am in the process to switching to Lexapro and I am discouraged because i'm also very tired, your body doesn't get used to it?
Avatar f tn what about weight gain with paxil please? Is it better or worse than citalopram?
Avatar n tn I am a survivor of an abusive marriage of 28 years and a major heart attack. The doctor insists that I must stay on antidepressants for the rest of my life. I gained 40 pounds while taking Zoloft and yet I can't cope without some sort of medication nor can I cope with this weight gain. I have always prided myself in looking nice. I have just switched to Wellbutrin XL because I heard it doesn't cause that weight gain that Zoloft does...
415867 tn?1323365503 Newer antidepressants don’t have the same side effect. While Paxil and Zoloft do cause some weight gain, other SSRIs, like Prozac, Celexa and Lexapro, don’t. For Paxil and Zoloft, the weight gain can add up to five to 40 pounds a year. Some people do experience weight gain with Lexapro or Celexa, but most don’t. In this case, it is not a surprise to have idiosyncratic responses, since the chemical structure of all the SSRIs is so similar.
Avatar f tn I used to take Zoloft many years ago. I took it for 4 full years at 150Mgs a day and it had absolutly no effect on my weight. Paxil on the other hand is one SSRI that seems to add pounds. Tri-cyclics and Tetra-cyclics absolutly do cause massive weight gain with no doubt. Meds like Prozac, Effexor, Welbutrin and Cymbalta never had any impact on my weight either. I do know that Paxil, Nortriptilyne, and Remeron are very much associated with massive weight gain in most people.
245504 tn?1224099316 It was Paxil and yes 13 years later I am still on it. I only gained the ten pounds, it didnt continue.
Avatar m tn Sometimes wellbutrin is combined with an ssri such as Paxil to combat the weight gain. So you might want to try the Zoloft or maybe Lexapro and see what happens.
Avatar f tn Hello, I've been on paxil for about 4 yrs,for my anxiety and depression, it has worked wonders for my anxiety, but lately my depression has got worse and just feeling uneasy, unmotivated. I go to my doctors in a couple of days and want to try a new depression med,but am afraid my anxiety will come back. What meds should I try. Ive been on Lexapro twice first time it worked quit it and started it again when I had my first anxiety issues, didn't work for my depression.
Avatar m tn They was like candy for me in the past, no side-effects like increase anxiety but MAJOR weight gain... they lead to my morbid obesity problem and that's because of the Paxil that I had the gastric by-pass surgery to loose some weight... Ok, I was a fat kid already before the Paxil and drinking a glass of water was making me gaining 2 pounds... but the SSRI's didn't help me... My first med I try for my anxiety was the Buspar, it was new at the time in 1994...
Avatar m tn ve heard of paxil causing weight gain and weight gain and diabetes can go hand in hand. I have friends that have lost weight and their diabetes went completely away.
Avatar f tn I am not on Paxil,& I'm not on Lexapro but my mother uses Lexapro and she seems to be fine on it. She's been on it for one year since my Dad died after a long-term illness. In my opinion, 3 weeks is not long enough to know if your body likes Lexapro or not, so talk to your Doc and maybe give it a try for a bit longer. I'm not a DOC, so this is just my opinion. I've known people on Paxil ,and Paxil helped them w/ their social phobias.
Avatar f tn Of course, that is what also makes them devilishly difficult to ever stop taking. As to Paxil and weight gain, I gained a lot on it, but others gain a lot on other meds and none on Paxil -- that is very individual.
Avatar n tn Getting off Paxil (if needed) is really no worse that stopping any other antidepressant. Paxil is the one SSRI that people report the most weight gain with. This doesn't mean you will gain weight on Paxil. Everyone is different, but yes Paxil is notorious for weight gain side effects.
1140114 tn?1260923267 i took zoloft for 6 months....the same exact thing happened to me minus the weight gain. i felt like a total robot. i stopped taking it...this was like 10 years ago...i was barely 18 and they put me on that ****. can you get her off of it? that's really the only way to get her back.
763297 tn?1281379425 I have done research about the side effects from taking Paxil but their website says weight gain is a possibility and mentions nothing about the loss of energy. I feel like I cannot accomplish anything because of all the sleep I require. Im 24 and I went from a size 1 to a size 7. I have decided against my doctor's wishes to stop taking this medication. I am wheaning myself off slowly because of the horrible withdrawl sysmptoms such as severe dizziness and nausea.
Avatar n tn First I took Lexapro then Cymbalta and now Zoloft. My doctor keeps changing my meds because of the weight gain and every change only makes it worse. This latest change has caused me to gain about a pound a day. Since Thursday I have gained three more pounds and have been eating next to nothing. I finally convinced my doctor that I am not pigging out all day and she ha ordered a thyroid test. I'm so scared that I'm going to die from this, it's uncontrollable.
527657 tn?1214051850 Does anyone know about how long it takes for antidepressants to get completely out of your system? I was on paxil for two years and gained too much weight so my doctor switched me to zoloft for 3 weeks. Im off both now offically today. Or at least I hope so. Im not planning on taking any more zoloft unless the withdrawel is too bad. I weaned off it. Also does anyone know how long it takes to start losing the weight from these drugs?
Avatar f tn As for the weight gain, it depends on the person. Some people notice some weight gain, some actually lose, and some see no change at all. I was on Zoloft and had no issues with weight gain. Try not to get a bunch of preconceieved notions about the Zoloft based on what others have told you. Allow yourself to have your own experience...it will probably greatly differ from other people's.
Avatar n tn Well, finding the right antidepressant is sometimes trial and error. If paxil wasn't the right one, there are others. Zoloft is pretty well tolerated. But you have to remember that all of those types of medications take a couple of weeks to get used to! Give them 6 weeks fair trial or else you don't know what it is like to be on them.
Avatar f tn All of these drugs can cause weight gain except maybe prozac, but it isn't that effective for anxiety most of the time. So you're either going to figure out a non-med way of fixing your problem or face weight gain, since you're obviously one of the ones who has that side effect. And as for being hungry all the time, I don't think that's really got anything to do with it, I gained 50 pounds on Paxil and didn't change my eating at all and always exercised a lot.
Avatar n tn I took zoloft first but gave me gastro problems so doc wanted me to switch. Zoloft seems to work very similar to paxil at least it did for me.
1354136 tn?1331875317 Zoloft on it's own is not supposed to cause weight gain. The weight gains observed are mostly due to increased calories intake, modification of lifestyle habits.
527657 tn?1214051850 It sounds as if your weight gain may be at least partially due to sedentary lifestyle. If it helps motivate you to be more active, I read that everyone should do 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day, such as walking at a fairly rapid rate. Apparently any day you don't do this, you are actually wearing your body out. Exercise alone won't burn many calories, so you also have to be especially careful of the amount of calories you are ingesting.
Avatar f tn I've been thinking that I need to be on an anti-depressant. Am currently on Klonopin for general anxiety but feel down a lot and feel I am depressed. Soooooo, I need to decide if I want to go on an anti-depressant but there are so many to choose from. My sister is on a low dose of Lexapro and is doing well with it. My doctor recommended Paxil a while back but we decided I should go on Klonopin instead. And I've read that Paxil causes weight gain.
Avatar n tn Currently taking 30 mgs of Paxil because of severe GAD. Because of weight gain doctor has suggested switching to Zoloft. How do you think the doctor could switch. Does it work for most people in switching from one SSRI to another or do most people have significant side effects?
