Lexapro for social anxiety

Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro for social anxiety

Avatar n tn Hi Jehu, I know this would be really hard for someone with social anxiety to do..but maybe that's why you should do it. I think you would benefit a lot from an introductory acting class. In an introductory acting class there is normally a lot of emphasis on learning to relax and not being afraid of looking silly. I think it would help you build a lot of confidence. Normally people are too self-conscious about themselves to notice what others look like.
Avatar m tn David, as you can see now your drug taking was probably a cover up for this kind of social anxiety. It is now time to learn the skills that you have been avoiding. Read everything you can about social anxiety, and seek cognitive therapy, and begin to work on it seriously as a skill to learn, rather than as an anxiety to run away from. You can get a lot of help very soon with this issue.
Avatar f tn So I have palpitations pvcs and fast heartbeat but eliminating caffeine and starting Metroprolol has helped a lot. But I also have pretty severe social avoidance and anxiety especially in unknown situations and people. I've been unemployed for some time because I'm so anxious about starting a job. I've been taking Xanax as needed for awhile which helps the anxiety and also just recently stopped Propranolol and started Metroprolol.
Avatar m tn Then I got married to a very social and outgoing man who LOVES to be the life of the party and I wanted to make him happy by going out all the time, but it didn't work out so well and began my Lexapro treatment. He learned a lot about me and what gives me anxiety attacks. I'm 36 now and off of the Lexapro, I have 1 or 2 friends (that I don't see very often and that's ok), 5 children, and a wonderful, supportive husband.
Avatar m tn I take Lexapro, and have for several years with excellent results. I'm not sure if you're taking it, or thinking about taking it. If you're already taking it, then contact your doctor it may be time to tweak the dosage. If it's been prescribed but you have doubts...don't, try it. We all react differently to these types of medications, and sometimes it is trial and error as to which one will work best for us.
681888 tn?1272925909 this was the first AD that i tried. it worked well for my social anxiety disorder. but then it stopped working. it caused weight gain for me. the standard dosage is 10 mg (or 20 mg). my doctor had said if it causes drowsiness, take it before bedtime. good luck.
Avatar n tn I'm not a doctor I just have knowledge from my personal experience...... I'm currently on lexapro 10mgc for anxiety also... How it went with me was day 1 and 2 didn't feel anything ... then 3-9 or day 10 I was getting bad dizzy spells after I took the pill about 20 mins later that I took it, so i started to take it in the pm and by the time I wake up I didn't feel it too bad, but give it like 2 weeks then try to evaluate yourself about if the medication side effects are subsiding.
Avatar f tn I understand that, try a med called GABAPENTIN it did wonders for my anxiety. You have to take 1200mg approx for it to work but just ask for it and don't tell the doc you will take that much at once. They used to give it in 6000mg doses for trials so its safe. I take 800mg 4 times per day and it did wonders for social anxiety. I take klonopin also sometimes. Trust me it works. It takes 2 hours to fully take effect (gabapentin) but it will work.
Avatar n tn As far as the medicine for helping with depression and anxiety, I have yet to have it help. First was Lexapro 20mg for about a month and a half. I had no changes still sad and socially nervous. Then the doctor switched me to Zoloft slowly adding the dose to 200mg for about two months. This did not help either. I thought for sure Zoloft would be the one that would really help me so I am starting to feel like these medicines are not working for me.
Avatar f tn I've been diagnosed - by a psychiatrist - with Social Anxiety Disorder. I've been taking Lexapro for almost 2 months - started on 10 mg and the dosage was up to 20 mg two weeks ago. Also, for the last 3 months I've been speaking every week or two with a licensed professional counselor. My main problem is associating with people that are close to my age range, I'm 26.
Avatar n tn History: I have Social Anxiety and Depression. I took Lexapro 10mg. for about 1 1/2 years, but am now tapering off due to gaining 15-20 lbs. and loss of libido (Lexapro worked wonders for both Anxiety and Depression). I started Wellbutrin XL 150mg. with the Lexapro a few months ago to help counteract these side effects, but didn't have success. Now my Dr. wants me to taper off the Lexapro completely (2 more days of 5mg.) and try keeping the Wellbutrin XL 150 mg.
Avatar n tn I have Social Anxiety Disorder (primary) with Depression. I took Lexapro 10 mg for a year and a half and gained 15 pounds and had a low libido. My doctor added Wellbutrin XL 150 mg about 6 months ago to counteract the symptoms, but it didn't help. My new doctor had me taper off the Lexapro (3 days off now - nausea, cramping, sleepiness, nightmares, headache, dizziness) and wants me to try staying on the Wellbutrin XL 150 mg alone.

Avatar n tn He then told me that I have panic disorder, general anxiety disorder and social anxiety, he gave me luxtanil to help me sleep and seroxat CR 25 mg (paxil). After reading horror stories of paxil, I decided not to take it so he gave me cipralex (Lexapro) 10 mg and said its safe and helpful and its side effects and withdrawal are much less than paxil. I am still afraid to start the medication to tell you the truth.
Avatar n tn I believe that you need to talk to the doctor about the underlying problem of anxiety, if you haven't already. Have you ever tried medication for anxiety? I'm so sorry that it is making you feel so uncomfortable making the necessary rounds to the bank and clinics and affecting your self confidence at work. I know i've heard of botox being a cure for facial sweat, and of course, the foods you eat (m husband would sweat profusely while and after eating garlic).
Avatar n tn Then it started happening every once and a while mostly when involved in a conversation with somebody and sometimes by myself when I was thinking to myself, I am trying to find out what could of sparked this and how can I fix the problem, because ever since the twitching started I have also noticed other symptoms, it seems I suffer from a social anxiety problem now, I am also very jumpy when some one walks into a room it startles me and when I notice them I jump/flinch, I feel jumpy all the tim
Avatar m tn Also, Lexapro saved my life for several years in terms of anxiety, but recently stopped working for me. Perhaps an SSRI can help you, too? Good luck to you!
127512 tn?1193745816 I was just wondering does anyone here get social security for their anxiety/panic attacks? I have suffered for many many years and can no longer work. I also have a heart murmur and miteral valve prolapse.
Avatar n tn I saw a psychiatrist and he suggested I had a slight social phobia and some generalised anxiety. A small amount of valium worked until lexapro (an antidepressant) kicked in and then i began to feel normal again quickly. If it's acute and you feel not quite right, go to your doctor and ask for some antianxiety meds, a very low dose that you should never use for a month, and never use it if you are drinking alcohol. You may be better to skip the vlium altogether and try an antidepressant...
4810971 tn?1359480360 My mother has depression, OCD, and social anxiety disorder, and lately it is getting worse. I am 15, and I have Bipolar disorder and OCD, so I get depressed a lot, too, but nothing like this. At night, she will sit on the couch with her head in her hands, and will stare at nothing for hours, no matter how much we try and talk to her, and we eventually give up. This happens every night, no matter what.
Avatar m tn I have been on Lexapro for social anxiety, general anxiety, and depression for about 8 months and it has helped a lot with those problems. However, I have gained about 30 pounds and I can't lose it. I seem to be unmotivated to exercise and always wanting to eat. I was never like this before starting the medication. In fact I was an avid cyclist and very skinny before. I don't want to have the anxiety, but I also don't want to be heavy and lazy.
Avatar f tn I also have heart palpitations and have to take a beta blocker for those. My docs tell me to take the Lexapro. Should I? Has it helped free anyone else from anxiety?
Avatar n tn I should mention, I am a 25 year old male.
Avatar m tn im 18 and have a social anxiety problem and i dont no what to do about it anymore. I tried to go back to school yesterday and had one of the worse experiences with the anxiety of my life. I seriously felt lie i was going to die while sittting in the classroom and had to leave. I`ve never told anyone i had this problem before because im so embarrassed.
Avatar n tn All SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, and Anafranil are indicated for OCD. Lexapro is a relatively new SSRI, so it has not obtained enough studies for FDA approval for OCD. FDA is a very cautious body. As it is an SSRI, further studies and time will provide plenty of evidence for FDA approval as an anti-obsessive agent. To avoid stigma, you can obtain online Cognitive-behavioral therapy for your OCD.
Avatar f tn I've been taking Lexapro for a little over 3 months now for anxiety. Well, in some ways I can tell it has helped quite a bit as I'm not stressing over everything and am not as moody. However, I don't feel as though it has really helped with the social anxiety much, which is my main problem. I'm taking the medication and I've been speaking with a counselor as well. Lately, I've been frustrated with the fact that I feel emotionally numb.
Avatar n tn SSRI's are used for depression and for generalized anxiety as well as social anxiety. It takes 2-3 weeks to get the effects of the drug. Often, in the beginning of taking an SSRI, you may get more anxiety and other things like not sleeping well etc. In other words, makes you feel worse than you did before (at times)...however, in the long run it ususally makes you feel better.
