Common Questions and Answers about Jaw pain after jaw surgery

jaw-pain

Avatar m tn A week has gone by from all four impacted wisdom teeth were surgically removed. My jaw on the right side feels like it is locked. I can only open my jaw 1 inch. When I try to open it farther I get excruciating pain and it won't open. Left side is fine. I was very swollen the first three days after surgery. What should I do?
Avatar n tn I also have felt a little tingle in my face in that area when I open wide and hear a small click in my jaw. Does this sound like TMJ and could it be related to the surgery? Should I contact my oral surgeon or a dentist that specializes in this? I hope this pain is temporary because it is really annoying. I also had a dry socket/slow heal on that side, but it feels fine now. This seemed to come out of the blue! Anyone experience this? Thanks in advance!!
Avatar f tn my surgeon said that the pain was only supposed to last a week at most, and that after two weeks the cyst removal area should be completely healed.
Avatar n tn What was your osteotomy for? The clicking jaw and pain could be due to the surgery. This is something you should follow up with the treating surgeon.
Avatar f tn t clenched since and I have never had this issue before, I make sure to be aware during the day and at night i pillow myself in so I can only sleep on my back (when i sleep on my back my mouth falls open) . However in 2005 I had jaw surgery so I have plates in my jaw. I am concerned I may have done some real damage, Should I go to a Maxillofacial surgeon or is it normal for it to take this long to subside?
2932946 tn?1344722012 Since i had surgery I've had a problem with the left side of my jaw "catching". when i open my mouth very wide it feels like it catches and it's definitely not painless. I never had a problem with it before. Anyone else have this issue?
Avatar f tn For several years, I have experienced severe jaw nerve pain. The pain is located very deep in the jaw behind my teeth, almost in my neck. I have been to several dentists, had xrays and exams and they cannot find a problem. I liken the pain to eating a lemon....that piercing feeling you get in the jaw ...only multiplied about 50 times. This is very painful and aspirin, muscle relaxers, pain medication etc does not relieve it at all.

Avatar f tn i have severe jaw pain. was diagnosed with TMJ a few months back but i think i have had it for awhile longer. i grind my teeth severely at night. my pain is getting worse. what type of doc do i see for this?
Avatar n tn I have had pain in the left joint of my jaw for years now. As far as I can remember I have not been knocked in that area. The area of pain can stretch from the lower jaw area right up to my ear and can even give me neck pain. It causes pain when I open my mouth wide and always feels like the bones are 'clicking' and 'clunking' out of place. I have had phisio on the joint but that is only a stretch of the muscle and the pan is always present.
Avatar f tn I have developed a blue spot on the chewing surface of the tooth. I am facial pain around by jaw and ear. I had jaw surgery 10 years ago with plates and screws. Could the jaw pain be from the plates and screws in by jaw.
1947337 tn?1331423890 You say you have good teeth, then does your jaw click when you bite or chew? You may have TMJ, which can cause nasty jaw pain. I have it. Muscle relaxers are usually the best treatment and massage of the jaw muscles outside of the jaw under your ears. Also, place your tongue at the bottom of your mouth flat. Try to pin the tip of your tongue to your bottom teeth. Then try to open your mouth straight without your jaw popping out of place.
Avatar n tn I woke up 2 days ago with some wicked jaw pain, I have graves and I just wanted to know if this is normal or should I be looking at other reasons for this pain.
Avatar n tn I also have alot of pain and tightness in the jaws in the mornings and it takes a while for me to be able to fully open my mouth. There is pain with chewing, yawning, talking and side movements of my jaw. I have also been getting alot of pretty bad headaches, I wake up in the middle of the night at times due to headaches and usually always have one when I awaken in the mornings.
Avatar n tn t stop for about 12 hours after the procedure, and after two days I had severe pain and my jaw next to the extracted tooth got so stiff and my mouth would't open easily. I took ibuprofen for the pain and it worked(400mg for 3times aday), but my jaw is still locked and I can hardly open it to eat. my doctor says that I had "dry socket" it will go away in 2 weeks or so. is it common to have locked jaw as a symptom of dry socket? should I be worried?
Avatar f tn Which they gave me a local. After the surgery a few weeks later my right jaw started hurting. I went to the ENT specialist and it turned out my ears were infected and full of fluid. My jaw continued to hurt. I received a full round of ATB. During this time I went to the dentist 2 times. No-one can figure out what is wrong with my jaw. In June I received bilateral tubes in my ears. The pain continued. I went to the Chiro x's 5. This give me relief for a short period.
Avatar f tn Have been doing very well since surgery. Started having strange headaches last year in left temple and jaw area. Went to e/r and after cat scan was told it was most likely TMJ. I have been wearing bite guard for last year and it got better but started hurting again this week really bad and having spasms in jaw and now my neck is killing me on the left side. Pain is going up the left side of neck and down left shoulder into arm.
Avatar m tn I had the two lowers removed (both impacted) and felt that the majority of the site was fully healed 2 weeks after surgery. \However, on Friday night (about 3.5 weeks after surgery) I heard a weird crick/pop in my jaw when going to eat a piece of bread that felt somewhat painful but didn't think anything of it. The next morning I woke up with extreme swelling on my left jaw (kind of how day 2 looked), felt a golf ball size lump on my cheek and can't open my jaw that much.
Avatar m tn I am a 54 year old male. I had my 3 remaining wisdom teeth surgically removed 5 weeks ago. 1 week out of surgery, I went back to the surgeons office because of what I thought was an abnormal amount of pain. I was diagnosed with dry socket. Today, 4 weeks after that, I am still experiencing jaw pain that won't allow me to sleep. The pain radiates up my jaw to my ear. Initially it was the lower jaw that was bothering me but now it is both lower and upper.
Avatar f tn Wondering if the problem that I have with my could cause jaw pain??? I noticed on Sunday afternoon when I was eating lunch that my jaw was hurting - hurt to open my mouth and hurt while chewing. I think I have TMJ, although no dentist has agreed with me, but my jaw clicks and I can see it shift when I open my mouth. So now I have this jaw pain that almost seems connected somehow to my neck -- just not sure if it's a possibility?? And how can I relieve it??!!?? Any input is appreciated!
1755089 tn?1376053555 I will also add, I have not had that type of pain since surgery...I may have occasional facial pain that feels more like a sinus issue...but nothing like the other pain I used to get.
Avatar m tn A doctor a year ago performed endodontic surgery in my lower jaw and removed infected tissue and bone in my lower four teeth. But infection again developed resulting in Jaw bone infection. I want to ask whether one year infection in bone can be cured with medicine and is clindamycin best for it or there is surgery required to remove the dead and infected bone. I will be thankful if any one guide me and God will help you in the time of need. Those who help humanity. God loves them.

Avatar f tn Daily I have teeth sifting, gum swelling, jaw swelling, incesion swelling, ear pain...which eventually leads to neck pain, shoulder pain...when I get a low grade fever and sore throat I emediately go to er (who tell me, oh you only have allergies) dentist (who says, this is puzzling, no infections...or you have abcesses) I get them fixed only to be back in the same boat a few months later....
Avatar n tn Then all my pain went away and i slowy used my jaw more, and started doing my regular day to day activities. Then suddenly about 4 weeks after the surgery i have had extreme pain on my lower right side of my jaw. It just started back up, out of no where. I didnt hit it, or accidentaly chew something hard. Also when i was recovering after the surgery my lower right side took the longest to recover. I have heard about a condition called TMJ.
Avatar f tn I had jaw surgery about 20 years ago. I'm not sure what it was called but they pulled my chin out and also removed bone from my upper jaw. I have felt pain on and off the entire time since but this weekend I got to where I could hardly open my mouth to eat without having a lot of pain. I know I need to go to the doctor but I do not have the money to go. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas to ease some of the pain.
