Common Questions and Answers about How does gabapentin work

neurontin

8496079 tn?1398412516 My question is simply, can Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) work very fast? Has anyone else experienced the release of an amazing relief from certain parts of debilitating pain. (if not all). Has anyone experienced this from this drug? I'd very much like to know.

Avatar f tn m wondering is, does this dose sound large enough to be effective? How long did it take you guys for gabapentin to work? Or just any experiences you have to share would be great! Well, thanks, you all! I appreciate the help.
Avatar f tn Yes, I was able to work through a year and a half of TN. Probably because I had to keep my job in order to have health insurance (to pay for TN treatment)! I am in IT management -- a Business Analyst, doing classroom training, meetings with customers and with upper management, and (luckily) a lot of time at my PC. I have TN in the upper and lower left jaw areas and MS.
Avatar m tn Cats8 FYI, I was on Gabapentin for back pain and it did nothing for the pain. I too was on 1200mg. Gabapentin is for nerve pain (and other things). You may want to try something else since this doesn't work. I did have to taper off of it because I got insomnia from going down on it. There are a lot of other things to try for pain.
Avatar f tn Possibly if the gabapentin does not work speak with the Physician about "lyrica' .it is a refined form of Gaba and seems to have good clinical success for neuropathy ..off label I find it personally better than gabapentin Best...
293157 tn?1285873439 What is this rush to give you Gabapentin without confirming the pain is neuropathic. Have you had an EMG and nerve conduction study done? MRI's. Full blood tests for signs of muscle disorders, thyroid, adrenal etc. etc.? I really, really don't understand why doctors just hand out Gabapentin like it's a regular painkiller. it is NOT.
Avatar f tn s still a mystery) then they tried tramadol didnt work blah blah lol. I have enough gabapentin to taper down off off need be. But I only plan on being on them for about 5 days or so. Just see how I feel!! Thanks for the post and advice!
Avatar f tn Also, some drugs have to be at a higher dose to work while others can work in small doses and work together well with others..Gabapentin seems to work well at high doses. You will get used to the tiredness (if you have it) soon. If you need to get off of it it took me a long time because I didn't have antoher drug to substitute to get off of it with so I used Benedryl to sleep because if you go off of it you taper and it gives you insomnia.
1175180 tn?1263994996 I was up to 900mg of Gabapentin daily and my Dr finally switched me over to Lyrica which did work better than the Gabapentin, it is mostly used to treat Fibromyalgia but also works well for nerve type pain. I still take Endocet 10/325mg but only 20mg a day for breakthrough pain. WOW, is he really taking 8-10 10mg Endocet daily? It's not the Endocet I'd be concerned about but the tylenol that come in each pill.
393986 tn?1303825975 hi, i take 2400 mg of gabapentin a day. it does seem to dull it, get the fire out. how much can one take? my dr said up to 3600mg but i have been taking so much med's, here is a list 800mg 3xday of gabapentin, 10mg 3x day of flexeril, .50mg xanax 3x day, 100 mg 1xday of trazadone, wear lidoderm patches for 12 hours a day, vitamin d, potassium, 100mg imitrex as needed but only 2x week. any suggestions for better meds?
Avatar m tn Being female -- I can't answer your question about ED. I do know that I tried gabapentin -- didn't work, Tegretol (Carbamezepine) didn't work. But Trileptal worked well. It DID cause nausea and drowsiness. The pain doc said to take it a half-hour to an hour before eating and that resolve the nausea. He also advised taking a No-Doz (equal to 1 cup of coffee) along with the daytime doses -- and that took care of most of the drowsiness.
Avatar f tn With anything though I would only take it as long as you have too. If on it for awhile it does have to be tapered off of. When you do a search for it type in gabapentin, the generic name. It brings up much more information on it. Maybe call a pharmacist and ask them. The should have the better answers about it. Best of luck and let me know how it works for you!
Avatar f tn While I slept 10 hours last night, I still have a ton of pain in my hips and shoulders. My question is, how long will it take for the gabapentin to reach therapeutic levels in my system? I know everyone is different so I am just trying to get a general overview. I also am hypothyroidism and some of my pain is from that too. Thanks for any help and input!
Avatar f tn Well, gabapentin does make a person sleepy, but in time the effects go away. It is used mostly to help with pain and sleep, altho it is also used to help people with other neuromuscular disorders like RLS. But from what I understand, the best medicine for Dystonia, among others, are tranquilizers, like Valium and Klonopin.
Avatar n tn Which is the worst for me, it just wont quit, does anyone know how long this can/will last? Well I do have the Hylands Restful Legs, and also Gabapentin. Just wondering will it actually help my leggs, and should I fear of this becoming addictive as well? At this point, Im 9/10 days clean, so sorta afraid to even take it. Or should I just try to ride the RLS out? Im seriously trying to get through this, can anyone tell me approx. how long their RLS lasted?
