Gabapentin dosage shingles

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin dosage shingles

Avatar f tn Hi has anyone been on gabapentin or heard of it before? I have had 3 discectomies on L4/L5 disc and now have tissue scarring leaving me with the same as before all my surgeries. I have been prescribed gabapentin this week for nerve damage in that area of my back. I am in first week on it and taking 600mg per day.
1140169 tn?1370188676 3- Are weird dreams/nightmares a side effect of Gabapentin? 4- Are you taking or have you tried Gabapentin? Hoe does/did it work for you? What dosage do/did you take? Thanks all, looking forward to your comments.
Avatar m tn I can't believe how well gabapentin has worked. I've been thru the withdrawals going cold turkey 3 times in the past without anything to help. I was presribed gabapentin about a month ago for pain. It didn't help for that. I did some research on it and it is used for withdrawals. It has been 90% easier than before and trust me, I know how bad it is. The only syptoms I have had this time is I'm just a little cold and a bit of anxiety but nothing like before.
Avatar f tn I do have a bottle of 100 mg gabapentin (270 count) and have heard it willl ease withdrawal symptoms. How much should I start with, how many doses a day and how many days can I safely take it until I have to withdrawal from it too? I also have a bottle of methocarbamol and have heard it could ease the withdrawals. Has anyone ever tried it? I have been prescribed all these drugs including the vicodin for a botched broken leg/ankle surgery resulting in nerve pain.
1573548 tn?1330460463 Hello, I take gabapentin 3 times daily. Honestly I am not sure how much it helps me. At first I started out at 1 tab in AM and PM. Now I am up to 1 in AM 1 at noon and 2 at night. If I miss a dose at night I can really feel it. I do not sleep well, and I get nerve pain/jitters (I get the restless leg syndrome but it is in my buttocks too and I am up off and on all night) Anyhow, I do think it defintely helps me with sleeping...huge difference.
681148 tn?1437665191 What was the dosage you took to deal with the nerve pain and how long did you take it before the nerve pain stopped? I'm not concerned about the safety of the Neurontin at the low dosage I'm taking. I'm actually more concerned about the effectiveness.
1351082 tn?1479843732 What is your dosage for gabapentin? I am to build up slowly to 2400-3600 mg -- plus Hydrocodon-Acetaminophn -- plus Aleve -- at 3 each day.My former neurologist was not helpful -- have to dump them. I am trying to be optimistic about the med mix. Just started. Can you sleep? I take 75mg Trazodone -- relatively cheap and thankfully, works like a charm. It's horrible. Wishing you some real relief.
Avatar f tn I have been desperately seeking something safe to help me sleep, while I wait for my brain disruption to normalize. About 1000mg of Gabapentin each evening shows promise after a few days. But I 've read wildly different things about this drug - from it being non-addicting, to it being harder to get off than the benzos! I do not know who or what to believe about this drug.
Avatar n tn Once the diagnosis came, they started Gabapentin pills, gradually increased dosage over 1 week until he got relief - Gabapentin 400 mg 3 times a day and his pain was finally managed. It is now one year later, he has tried to reduce the amount, with no luck, the pain comes back. So, Gabapentin is a lifesaver - he now has a great quality of life. Shingles can be horrific - for awhile - until the diagnosis. He had all the classic symptoms - but the Dr's are not listening.
2078040 tn?1332045019 So apparently i'v got a severe case of shingles that are internal so by the time i know it i'v got large absesses of infection that put me in the hospital regularly for months & cause the fibromyalgia pain to worsen most times permanently & my doctors barely pay attention to anything i'v said about how this is impacting my whole life i'v lost my job i barely have the energy sometimes to leave my room i take gabapention for both conditions but i'v got a 3 year old daughter to take care of
Avatar f tn I always just had about a 5 pount weight fluctuation. About two years after taking the radioactive iodine, I got painful Shingles on the right side of my abdomen, just this week I got another case of very painful shingles on the right side of my butt cheek, just on the very right of my rectum. Two distinct spots of rash. I have been in several car accidents which gave me three herniated discs (L4-5, T8-9 or T9-10 & C5-6). I wonder if the nerve problems may be causing the Shingles.
Avatar f tn Suzzie, I did a little research and here is a brief summary of what I found. Gabapentin is a drug approved ONLY for the treatment of seizure disorders and shingles. Preliminary clinical studies show that this drug has some effectiveness for treatment of bipolar disorder. There are also some studies that show Gabapentin helps some people with various anxiety disorders but it only has "limited usefulness".
Avatar f tn Gabapentin and Lyrica are often used for nerve pain. Less commonly Clonidine, an old blood pressure med, is used. Also some antidepressants like Cymbalta and Nortryptiline are used in treating nerve pain. Nerve pain can be very difficult to treat. My doctor tried me on many combinations and dosages of medications before we found what works best for me. Where is your nerve pain and what have you tried to treat it?
922972 tn?1243988728 Greetings! I am a 51 year old female. In the fall of 2000 I noticed a rash on my right breast in the shape of an upside down "T". By the spring of 2001, one half of my right breast was flaming red with no blisters. I was placed on antibiotics by a Dermatologist with no help. There was no itching, burning or pain until the spring of 2001. I began to have stabbing pain in my right breast, as well as under my right breast across my ribs.
329495 tn?1212427782 Shingles pain isn't a forever thing, is it? So, over 300 mg for shingles would be a temporary dosage.
4812794 tn?1359500746 I am now on Insulin glargine (rDNA origin) injections, and have been increasing the dosage bi-weekly and still nothing. Anyone got any idea how to get this under control? Wish I had come to this board before I started taking the Lyrica. I tend to have problems with drugs quite often. I have Crohn's disease, with a foot of my Ilium, Cecum, and Ascending Colon taken out. I suffer from a pinched nerve in my neck that affects my shoulder and upper left arm, get shots once in awhile which helps.
Avatar f tn Pain specialist for doctor prescribed a med similar to shingles to calm down the nerves, but i believe he needs to up the dosage. I am a very fit 59 year old woman, good build and not overweight. I am trying to walk twice a day, but the weather is not the best right now. I am determined to do so. Staples will be removed on Tuesday, 12/2, and I am hoping I will have more mobility.
Avatar n tn Not saying you have shingles, could be neuralgia (Gabapentin works on that or Lyrica). Only thing I know helps shingles is the antiviral. Hope this information is helpful.
Avatar m tn No visible skin outbreaks from shingles for me either. My pain also moves around the left side of my chest. I'm on 300 mgs of Gabapentin/Neurontin. So far no relief from the pain, which can be very intense (left side of chest with numbness in left arm). How long were you on Gabapentin before you got some pain relief? Have you ever tried TP massage therapy? I understand it works for people instead of TP injections. Any other advice? Good luck. Let me know how it goes for you.
Avatar m tn i have had internal nerve pain from my right t-sec/lower shoulder blade/r-arm/ down to my index finger and thumb. the pain feels like internal shingles. i know because i have had them once on my stomach. pins/needles in the finger and thumb. at least that doesn't hurt. some days worse than others and some times during the day not noticable. no way to get comfortable enough to sleep. have to take a nerve pill and pain pill.
Avatar n tn I had Trigeminal Neuralgia after shingles on my face, and the pain is worse than anything I've ever felt before. She definately needs to be checked out.
Avatar m tn Most often they are either antidepressants (amitriptilyne) or anti-seizure meds (gabapentin, Lyrica). It can take a while to get the righ combination and dosage dialed in.
Avatar m tn Lyrica did give me blurred vision and extra paranoia at the start, and that was indeed awful for the first couple weeks as I upped my dosage! After the initial troubles, I found that it really was better than gabapentin for me now. I have not gained weight, but remain the same weight I call my meds weight. I just try to remain active and not pig out. I used to be very thin, so now I am just sturdy looking, neither fat nor thin.
Avatar f tn The dr put me on the patches because my 78 year old mother went with me to an office appointment and told him I was not remembering to take my oral pain med. I was in so much pain from the post herpatic neuralgia I have from the shingles that I was unable to refuse at the time. My family has turned their backs to me since I became ill and no one will help me by taking care of me physically. I live alone without any visitors. So now have depression on top of the pain.
Avatar f tn At first it was maybe 1-2 times a year, was brief and went to the doc multiple times. They thought ear infections, shingles, nothing ever developed. now I get it almost every 3-4 weeks and it lasts 2 weeks. (don't fret, I am sure this will not happen for you.) At this point I have 2 different personalities, the "pain" me and the "normal" me. My kids, husband, family, neuro know exactly which one I am as well, immediately after seeing me.
1695384 tn?1306455153 The anti-seizure meds (gabapentin, Tegretol, Trileptal. etc) at the right dosage level can stop the pain completely. Other coping mechanisms can help short-term -- some people like heat (I use a microwaveable beanbag) or ice. Oragel will numb teeth and gum pain caused by TN and allow you to chew and talk. Some people have reported success with upper cervical chiropractic or accupuncture. The main thing is not to give up.
Avatar n tn Hernia repair, tendon and nerve surgery have also helped other patients. Medications such as carbamezepine and gabapentin (again, if available in your country) have also been helpful in nerve pain. The best thing you can do is talk to your family care doctor and ask why you have "femoral nerve damage," and if it is surgically correctable. Otherwise consider the shots which should be available in S. Africa. GOod luck.
572651 tn?1531002957 i started at 50 mg 3x daily then it was increased to 100mg 3x daily. I had no problems with the 50 mg dosage, no sleepiness, feeling of being high etc. When it was raised to 100mg 3x I had to titrate up. I was stoned for lack of a better word. So I did the 100 at bedtime, 50 for the other two. Then I added the one in afternoon after I had accomplished all driving etc. Finally the last and I am having no side effects. Yes it lowers the pain etc.
Avatar m tn I don't mean to sound like I am negating or underestimating your experience with the stabbing sensations. It sounds like yours is considerably more intense than mine was. Plus, it is possible that your sensations have a different etiology than mine. However, I mentioned the Interferon side effects first because I know from experience that Interferon can cause some exceptionally bizarre side effects.
329495 tn?1212427782 I am really concerned that your doctor is confusing the maximum dosage for lyrica with the maximum dosage for gabapentin(neurontin). Consistently, lyrica is not recommended in doses over 600 mg. Gabapentin on the other hand can be OK at four-figure amounts. I was taking 2400 mg. before switching to lyrica. Please check and rule this out. I would just wonder how terrible it may (or may not) be to take 4 times the recommended dosage. I'd have him show me where 2500 mg. of lyrica is safe.
