Avatar m tn Hello Doctor, i'm 22 and lately I have been in constant anxiety and feelings of guilt since I had a possible exposure 32 days ago. I had protected sex with a random woman I met at a bar in Johannesburg. Her HIV status is unknown to me. The penetration didn't last two minutes and the condom was on throughout. after ejaculation, I carefully removed the condom and wrapped it in a tissue. I washed off my genitals and that was the end of the act.
Avatar f tn Those that specialize in HIV are normally Infectious Disease physicians. Those that only specialize in HIV are HIV specialists and their titles vary widely.
Avatar m tn I am 28 white circumsized male. I am currently on business in Johannesburg South Africa and last week I picked up a black African CSW after a few too many beers. Her status is unknown. I had protected insertive vaginal intercourse and as far as I could tell there were no issues with the condom I provided. I understand my risk for HIV is relatively low from this one time encounter. However, what would my risk be in terms of other stds or stis?
Avatar m tn Testing for p24 antigen and/or PCR testing (as for HIV viral load) might give earlier answers. In any case, assuming you haven't had sex with your partner since the blood exposure, she obviously is not (yet) at risk. But you will need to abstain (or use condoms consistently) for at least several weeks. 4) I am not familiar with that particular product. The name implies it contains lamivudine (which is good) plus another drug.
Avatar m tn Welcome to our Forum. Please remember to start with that you do not know if the substance you found on your hand was blood and if it was, whether it was from someone who have either hepatitis C or HIV. I'm pleased to assure you that even if what you licking form your finger was blood, there is no risk for acquisition of HIV or for hepatitis C. Both viruses live within the body and on exposure to the environment (air/drying/lower temperatures) they begin to die.
Avatar m tn I am experiencing anxiety becuase most sex workers in Johannesburg are HIV positive. Although I touched the sex worker and saw no cuts on her body or my hands. Can the infection occur by touching a HIV lesion on her body? can touching her clothes cause an infection?
Avatar m tn Knowing that the man may have Hiv, I nearly go mad. Is there huge possiblity for me to have HIV from him ?And what should I do ?

Avatar n tn “We found condoms reduced the per-act risk of [HSV-2] transmission by 65% from women to men and by 96% from men to women,” Helen Rees, MD, executive director of the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute, University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and colleagues wrote. The risk for transmission from women to men was 1.7 transmissions per 1,000 unprotected sex acts (95% CI, 0.6-4.4) and 0.6 per 1,000 protected sex acts (95% CI, 0.2-1.
Avatar m tn You have no risk of HIV
Avatar n tn Hi, I do know there is a Private hospital at Gaborone and which supposedly offers a high level of treatment. Your sister could perhaps travel across the border to Johannesburg where there would be far more options available. But if that were the case, I would Only recommend that she went to one of the Private Clinic's in Sandton or Rosebank (or similar). I have no idea what the cost would be. Best of luck to you both...
5805034 tn?1403865293 why do I always mess things up?, I always aim for goals that are almost impossible. I am just the wrong girl in the family, I am not a nice person. Well I thought I was a really good person but I am not. Heck, I cant even take care of myself, I wouldn't survive if there was a zombie apocalypse like the video game THE LAST OF US. I am soo talkative and gullible. I really want to study in Johannesburg next year but I don't even know if I am responsible enough to live on my own.
Avatar n tn It is not possible to have HIV and have both negative HIV RNA testing and negative HIV antibody testing at the times your tests were done. I repeat: not possible. And test results always overrule symptoms and exposure history. The tests prove beyond all doubt that you did not catch HIV. Believe the results. You are home free and do not need any additional testing.

Avatar f tn It is LONG past time for you to move on. You were advised previously that your tests are conclusive. You do not have HIV. There is no such thing as HIV "hiding" from the tests. MOVE ON.
1714035 tn?1308605341 If I could give you advice phone Dr. Stephan Volschenk at Vitalab i n Johannesburg. He is absolutely the best. After my tube reversal I had absolutely 0% chance of pregnancy. Thanx to the excellent service from him and Dr. Chris Venter from Klerksdorp I now have a beautiful, blue eyed 3 year old baby. It's worth the effort. It is in their personalities to offer advice over the phone and even follow up on your progress. Believe me! Youwon't be sorry.
Avatar f tn My sister is hiv-positive, she has been diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. She was a drug addict for 21 years of her life. But it seems the cirrhosis was caused by the hiv, not the drugs. Whatever the case, I need some answers please. We were told in February this year that her liver is no longer functioning. Her cd4 count has improved from 112 to 508 and her viral load has dropped from something like 13000 to 1500.
Avatar m tn This subject is discussed here ad nauseum. Anyone is free to decide for themselves when they feel comfortable testing. ON THIS FORUM, we adhere to the official guidelines, the doctors take a more liberal stance. Dr. HHH often posts a few links to posts he's made that explains in detail about testing protocols, and why they give the advice THEY do, and why we give the advice we do. They are a good read.
