Avatar n tn She was 10 months old when the doctors discovered her in heart failure. Her ejection fraction at this time was 15%. Over a period of 5 years, she has had an improvement of ejection fraction to around 35%. She tires easily and has night sweats along with leg, arm, and chest pain. Her doctors consider her stable because her heart has not enlarged in the last year. She takes Digioxin and Accupril twice daily. My question is about her meds. She weighs about 40 pounds.

For the next month and a half Carlos recuperated marvelous, but it was not until mid-March that he suffered several complications. He then had several echocardiograms along with a heart catherization.

Avatar n tn He may also prescribe beta blockers which prevent the heart from working very hard. In many cases, beta blockers have softened heart tissue again. I left untreated, it can lead to heart failure but you are on the case which is a good thing. With regards to your future and raising children. Dont worry, you have a long life with good prospects ahead of you.
Avatar f tn My third child (different dad than the first two) was born with a VSD and a ASD and went through heart failure had to have surgery at 2 months old. I am now expecting our fourth child (second together) and just found out that he also has a VSD and they wont know how bad it is until he is born. I just want to know why three of my kids have had it and what exactly how much the risk goes up with each child.
Avatar n tn What can cause this in children/adolescents? Can frequent PVC's like this lead to later problems? ie Lt.vent enlargement/failure? What tests should I insist cardiologist do? (we go next week) Thank you so much.
Avatar m tn The general rule is that repair in the first year of life usually (but not always) results in a return of the right heart pressure to normal. Children with large VSDs usually develop congestive heart failure symptoms in the first few months of life. If your child was not diagnosed to have a large VSD until 7 months of age, that could mean that there is something different about the resistance in his lungs.
Avatar n tn My brother, age 30, recently passed away (2006) with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. He was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction, hyperthyroidism back in 1998. He also had a past history of infectious mononeucleosis in 1996. I went in for an echocardiagram a month ago (I am 41) and tested negative. I do not have cardiomyopathy. My twin brother (fraternal) also went in for an echocardiogram and he also tested negative.
Avatar m tn Unfortunately I cannot advise you about your niece's heart given this limited amount of information. Most heart murmurs in children are, in fact, innocent in nature. This means that there are no structural abnornmalities of the heart that are present from birth. Innocent murmurs can come and go during the growing years, and can be heard intermittently.

Avatar n tn Posted By Karen on January 10, 1999 at 17:34:50: On November 21st, I delivered twins (32 weeks gestation) by emergency C-section after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure. 11 days later, one of my babies died of an infection of the bowels and intestines (although the findings will only be final when the final autopsy report is complete). Two weeks ago, I was told I made a full recovery. My other twin is doing fine. I am now told that I can't have more children.
Avatar n tn Normally, with CHF there is water retention either in the lungs and abdomen for left side heart failure or in the ankles and legs for right side heart failure. There is a cough with CHF that produces clear or white mucus. Left side heart failure is more serious than right side heart failure. Sometime people have both left and right side heart failure. Pressure builds up in the heart and lungs. Blood pressure medication is taken to keep the pressure down.
Avatar n tn I am a 71 yr. old female. I was told in grade school that I had a heart murmur. Also, I have had an enlarged heart since at least l963 when I was so informed aby the surgeon who removed varicose veins from my legs. This condition caused me no problems for many years. I carried on a full schedule of activities as wife, mother of four children, an eventually as a teacher.

Avatar n tn However, I think you should be evaluated by a cardiologist that is an expert in heart failure. If the determination is that it would be OK to proceed with another pregnancy, you should then be followed by a high risk OB/GYN program. All this would be best accomplished at a large medical center. Good luck. Information provided here is of a general nature. Specific diagnoses and treatments can only be made by your doctor.
Avatar n tn Chest complications following heart failure in very young children are common. I would talk with her heart specialist to make sure that the lungs are not continually congested with fluid. This could be a cause of continued chest problems, including infections.
