Avatar f tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. It sounds like you need to look at the number of carbs it does actually take to raise your blood sugars, and even what you use to treat a low. One thing we do for lows is to have our daughter take glucose tablets. They are 4 grams each, and raise blood sugars about 20 points for her. 16 carbs of yogurt would raise blood sugars into the 200s for our daughter, so you are likely just consuming too many carbs.

Avatar n tn I went to a diabetes education class that teaches about the sliding scale and how to take your Humalog. However, my doc gave me a formula to use to counteract high blood sugars when not enough insulin has been taken. It's (bloodsugar) - 100 divided by 40. So, if your blood sugar is 300 you would subtract 100 to get 200. Divide that by 40 to get 5 units of Humalog. I also have a scale for when I eat. It's for every 15 grams of carbs I take 2 units of Humalog.

Avatar n tn Hi Lurius, Net carbs are getting lots of attention these days because of all the Atkins dieters, but it's actually long been an important concept for diabetics who do carbohydrate "counting" and then try to match our insulin to the amount of carbos we're eating. Foods that have carbos typically have a combination of carbos that we can metabolize (and therefore will affect our BG) and those that we can't (fiber). We subtract fiber from total carbs to get net carbs.
Avatar f tn POP is HORRIBLE for dieting. Reqular pop has over 20 grams of sugar in 1 can and just as many grams of carbohydrates! In order to loose weight you have to cut back sugar and carbs. Diet soda doesn't have sugar or carbs but it has something in it that makes your appetite increase! Just say NO to pop! You will be glad you did!

Avatar n tn Are you sure they told you your child has to eat 30-45 grams of food or did they tell you your child had to have so many units of insulin per 30-45 grams of food? My son has to have 1 unit of insulin (novolog) per every 45 grams of carbs he eats. IF he does not eat the full 45 grams he does not need the unit. I usually wait until after he eats before giving him insulin because toddlers are so finicky they may not eat all of what you have measured out. HE is also on a slinding scale.
Avatar n tn carbohydrates that break down more slowly, releasing sugar more gradually into the bloodstream, have a low GI. As asok mentioned, watch the carbs. Avatar f tn I have been told that if something has over 5 grams of fiber to subtract it from the total carbs. Does anyone else do this? And if so for the drs reference should I record the total number of the number of carbs minus the fiber? Thoughts? Thank you!
Avatar f tn 15 grams of carbohydrates is equal to 1 carb count. Try to limit your carbs to 4 carbs or 60 grams per meal. And 2 carbs per snack. There are very good charts available online to help you guage the carbohydrates in fresh foods as well. Also try to eat at the same times daily. This will help keep your sugar levels stable and keep from putting a demand on your pancreas from binging because you skip meals or go long periods between eating.
Avatar m tn Restrict your carb intake to 60 grams per meal. Fat clogs your pipes!
