Avatar f tn Oh boy, Cereal can be quite difficult for a diabetic. To answer your question, you should be paying close attention to the number of carbs, in total, in your cereal. Cereals like bran have a higher fiber content, which may make your "net carbs" lower, because the fiber makes the carbs take longer to break down. I have had type 1 diabetes since age 14, and in general I try to stay away from cereal.

Avatar n tn Hi Lurius, Net carbs are getting lots of attention these days because of all the Atkins dieters, but it's actually long been an important concept for diabetics who do carbohydrate "counting" and then try to match our insulin to the amount of carbos we're eating. Foods that have carbos typically have a combination of carbos that we can metabolize (and therefore will affect our BG) and those that we can't (fiber). We subtract fiber from total carbs to get net carbs.
Avatar n tn If you really need those slices of bread for morning toast or whatever try buying those packaged loaves that say Italian Light on them-net carbs is usually ~6 per slice, which is low carb. Pace yourself-eat low carb foods throughout the day-don't stuff your furnace full of carbs all at once and expect it to hold you, plus your blood sugar will zoom higher when you download alot of carbs all at once. Plan ahead for snacks.

I cut out grains, pasta, sugar, potato, dried fruit for example. Before meals take DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice root) and papaya enzyme After meals chew cinammon gum for 30 minutes and sip ginger tea Slippery elm bark powder a few times per day. ( mix 1 tsp with water and eat).
Avatar n tn for breakfast you can have 2 to 3 net carbs, lunch 3 to 4 net carbs, and for dinner 4 to 5 net carbs. Of course i ususally only have 3 to 4 for lunch and 3 to 4 for dinner. They have put me on a 1800 calorie diet, but i ususally only eat around 1200, but only because im just not that hungry. Also you are supposed to eat about every 4 hours. so for snack you can have 1 to 2 net carbs. a good snack is carrots and lt. ranch or pretzel sticks w' 1 tblspoon of peanut butter.

You may have exceeded your carbs while losing weight and stumbled upon your tolerance for maintaining your new weight. Once weight loss resumes, move up in five-grams at a time. Watch out for sources of sugar and starches. Read labels carefully, Sauces, beverages and packaged foods all could have more sugar or starches than your body can handle.

I'm limited to 30g of carbs for breakfast and 45g of carbs for lunch and dinner. I can have a 15g snack between breakfast-lunch and lunch-dinner and a 30g snack after dinner. Proteins like cheese/meats/meat substitutes have negligible carbs.

I am sure you know that it is very important to limit your carbs because they are what raise your blood sugar. If possible, you could consult with a dietician. They can consider what you are eating now and help you to understand what changes need to be made, while incorporating the foods you currently enjoy.

Eat fruit with other foods to slow the absorption of fruit sugar [fructose]. There are those t2 diabetics that cannot tolerate fruits as they jack up our glucose to dangerous levels. Always test before and after eating fruit. This is the only way you're going to know if you can or cannot eat fruits.
Panda We do know that ALL carbohydrates raise Blood Glucose (BG) let me repeat that ALL carbs raise BG rice, pasta, potato, wheat (bread), sugar, honey, most fruit ALL contain significant amounts of carbs and will raise BG. Get a BG (Blood Glucose) meter. Test before you eat, test 1 hour after you eat. if your BG is too high you eat too many carbs. Too high is over 140 (US measure) 7.8 every ware else.
5747555 tn?1408727657 Fruit is fine, but in moderation. They are high in fiber and antioxidants, but can have a lot of fructose, which digests more slowly than, say, white flour or cane sugar, but still shouldn't be overdone. But a piece of fruit a day won't harm you.
Male things which we should all avoid and the complex carbs, such as those found in vegetables, whole grains, fruit, etc. Those are the carbs that provide dietary fiber, which is necessary for good digestive health. They aren't digested as quickly as the white versions, so they won't spike your blood sugar. Do watch portion sizes, though. Try switching to brown rice, whole grain pasta and bread, etc.
