Avatar n tn Dietary Ketosis has nothing to do with BG until your liver runs out of stored glucagon it can continue to raise BG (ie 8 - 10 hour high when fasting) how low are you going on the carbs? you can be in Ketosis with high BG. Ketosis means your body is using ketones for fuel instead of glucose. Diabetesforum(dot)com has many people doing diatery Ketosis.
Avatar f tn Your baby will be fine. Just realize that your baby is going to rob you of nutrients regardless. If you don't eat sufficient carbs then you will start suffering the consequences like more cavities, lack of calcium etc. This is what my doctor told me. I have ketosis by the way.
Avatar n tn Say you were about 16, anemic, and borderline diabetic. Would the Ketosis diet do any good in this situation? Please help and give detailed answers please, and if you know anything that would make following the diet easier, I would be much obliged in hearing it.
Avatar f tn You will also get weak from carb depletion (this passes in about 6 days) Once you reach Ketosis your body will start using fat for fuel rather than carbs (remember were not eating carbs anymore) so the liver must make Ketones to release fat for fuel. The body wants it's fuel so deny it carbs and it will feed off of fat when it has to. You need to understand that our bodies hate us. They actually want us to stay fat.
Avatar m tn It takes several days or more to get back into ketosis after even one day of too many carbs. So eating too many carbs once a week could keep you almost totally out of ketosis. Gimel is right. It is worth getting tested for low thyroid. many people find that they need their Free T4 in the MIDDLE of the range AND (that means in addition to) they need their Free T3 to be in the UPPER 1/3 of the range.
Avatar f tn Hi all, I started Atkins in early January '09. I have done Atkins before back in 2004/05 and lost 60lbs and got down to 160lbs which was pretty good for my height about 5'6". It took me about 7 months to get to my target weight. I was extremely happy and felt great. Got married in 2006 and well...kinda gained it all back and then some...so it goes huh. I hate I did that but I truly love food and before I knew it...all the weight was back on again.
1436324 tn?1283698760 personally, I do agree but I also suggest my clients to cycle the carbs once weekly so that there are no chances of diet-induces keto-acidosis that could possibly occur to those following atkin's diet too stringently over a longer period of time.
Avatar n tn Hi Lurius, Net carbs are getting lots of attention these days because of all the Atkins dieters, but it's actually long been an important concept for diabetics who do carbohydrate "counting" and then try to match our insulin to the amount of carbos we're eating. Foods that have carbos typically have a combination of carbos that we can metabolize (and therefore will affect our BG) and those that we can't (fiber). We subtract fiber from total carbs to get net carbs.
Avatar n tn Total CARBS minus fiber CARBS equals NET CARBS. Since fiber CARBS do not affect your glucose readings NET CARBS is more accurate for keeping track of intake. How do I know how many NET CARBS are in a food? Personally, I like caloriekingdotcom for looking up foods but you can also use a paperback book of foods w/nutritional analysis or read those government analysis labels on packaged goods. Decide on your personal goal for total daily intake of NET CARBS.
764257 tn?1234724152 I agree with the above. Talk to your doctor about whether you should try Atkins or not. I was on Atkins for approximately 5 months (something happened and I completely stopped eating, but it isn't related to the diet). The results were fantastic. By the end of the second week I (a carb lover) didn't want to eat carbs although I was still eating fruits and veggies. I lost weight and I felt good.
Avatar n tn for breakfast you can have 2 to 3 net carbs, lunch 3 to 4 net carbs, and for dinner 4 to 5 net carbs. Of course i ususally only have 3 to 4 for lunch and 3 to 4 for dinner. They have put me on a 1800 calorie diet, but i ususally only eat around 1200, but only because im just not that hungry. Also you are supposed to eat about every 4 hours. so for snack you can have 1 to 2 net carbs. a good snack is carrots and lt. ranch or pretzel sticks w' 1 tblspoon of peanut butter.
649848 tn?1534633700 ) Long term effects from an extended time in ketosis. Using fats and protein instead of carbohydrates (ketosis) as far I can tell, is a starvation mode our bodies have to prevent us from starving in times of low/no food. It is not clear how staying in ketosis for an extended period of time will effect a large population where a lot of people. Does the increased protein/fat breakdown cause kidney stones and liver problems?
Avatar m tn Is there a recommended numerical unit of carbs you should not exceed daily. ( Grams?? ) What are net carbs and affected by fiber intake?
Avatar n tn Yout vet IS right, high protein diets will harm you cat's kidneys...but the thing I don't get, you cat is diabetic or you're just scared that diets with carbs will cause diabetes?? Because it's not carbs that cause diabetes, it's a really high sugar diet that causes it in animals, commercial food have just the carbs and proteins and fats that your cat need (the good ones, of course there are some brands that can damage pets).
Avatar m tn Ketotic hypoglycemia more commonly refers to a common but mysterious "disease" of recurrent hypoglycemic symptoms with ketosis in young children. The cause and the homogeneity of the condition remain uncertain,[1] but a characteristic presentation, precipitating factors, diagnostic test results, treatment, and natural history can be described. It remains one of the more common causes of hypoglycemia in the age range.
Avatar f tn When are you seeing " 400+count of sugar"? If at fasting, levels this high usually warrants the addition of insulin. At other times it is always in the best interest of the patient to consult with their primary care physician regarding adjustments/additions to existing medications. Keep in mind levels this high are dangerous to your well being.
Avatar f tn Towards the end of February 2017 I had ketones in my urine and was in ketosis. I was excercisin religiously and watching my carb intake.i was eating between 100 to 150gms of carbs. I was not on a ketogenic diet. After that visit i have been extremely ill. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. blood sugar dropping rapidly when after exercise. My doctor said it could be the phentermine but that the metformin xr could also be reacting to the phentermine.
Avatar n tn This may be ketosis or in your case post exercise ketosis. You smell like acetone in a ketosis state . This is as close as i can find to nail polish; acetone is an ingredient in nail polish remover. The reason for ketosis is due to not enough glucose and so the body has to break down stored fat and convert it into energy instead. Metabolizing fat raises blood ketone levels therefore leading to ketosis.
Avatar n tn I currently eat a diet comprised of 30-35% protein, 45-50% carbs, and less than 20% fats. All toll, I consumer 2,800 calories a day to maintain my current weight of 108 lbs. at 5'4" (I've always been on the thin side, I'm a competitive Irish Dancer and Distance Runner). I want to start eating more fats and less protein... because it's very difficult to eat THAT much protein on a daily basis!

Avatar f tn Eating Healthy diet does not ensure that you will lose weight. Your weight is a balance between the calories you take in and the calories you burn. You will lose weight if you burn off more calories than you take in, and you will gain weight if you eat more calories than you burn off.
515251 tn?1254443201 you could do the atkins diet, provided you aren't allergic to dairy, eggs, and don't have high cholesterol. this diet you eat mostly protein , and fats. firts week is eggs, meat, keeping carbs under 25 aday. this pts your body into "ketosis", -burning fat after that increase 5 carbs aweek, unti you are aprox 10lbs from your desired weight. keep increasing carbs this way until you start to plateu your weight. this is how to mainatin your weight.
Avatar f tn Oh boy, Cereal can be quite difficult for a diabetic. To answer your question, you should be paying close attention to the number of carbs, in total, in your cereal. Cereals like bran have a higher fiber content, which may make your "net carbs" lower, because the fiber makes the carbs take longer to break down. I have had type 1 diabetes since age 14, and in general I try to stay away from cereal.
