915369 tn?1355314810 I used gabapentin for pain and it worked quite well for that. My one friend says it is the first drug that has ever helped her bipolar. Its success rate with bipolar isn't that high, and it is almost always used with another drug. That being said for me it was side effect free so it may be worth a shot. The site crazymeds the good the bad and the funny of neurological medications (google crazy meds) has a sheet that lists gabapentin as an add on for bipolar.
6937315 tn?1386287618 My research on pain forums and drug websites, which is how this drug is usually used, for pain, shows that at the doses used for pain, which can go pretty high given this drug seems to poop out regularly, coming off is pretty much like coming off a benzo for at least some people, which makes sense since this is shooting pure GABA into your brain, bypassing your digestive system altogether.
Avatar m tn Most of the individuals described in these reports had a history of poly-substance abuse or used Gabapentin to relieve symptoms of withdrawal from other substances. When prescribing Gabapentin carefully evaluate patients for a history of drug abuse and observe them for signs and symptoms of Gabapentin misuse or abuse (e.g. development of tolerance, self-dose escalation, and drug-seeking behavior).
Avatar n tn I was taking Gabapentin 300 mg for extreme nerve pain in my foot, it worked like magic for approx. 3 months then stopped being effective. Any Thoughts - Reasons?
Avatar f tn Hi has anyone been on gabapentin or heard of it before? I have had 3 discectomies on L4/L5 disc and now have tissue scarring leaving me with the same as before all my surgeries. I have been prescribed gabapentin this week for nerve damage in that area of my back. I am in first week on it and taking 600mg per day.
3135572 tn?1342657739 I have been on gabapentin for a while now. 900 mg 4 x day. I have not had any twitching from it. I used to have the twitching before I started the med. Everyone reacts differently, so I would suggest checking out the side effects you can find a more comprehensive list on line. Check out the manufacturer web site.
Avatar f tn Hi...Gabapentin is not a generic for Lyrica, but Neurontin...Lyrica is used to treat Fibromyalgia....and many times chiari is mis-dx'd as Fibro...the symptoms for chiari r similar to many diff conditions which is y getting a dx can be diff and many drs r more familiar with the other conditions then they r with chiari, so they feel it can not be chiari. http://www.google.com/url?url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.

Avatar f tn Hi All!! I have heard that gabapentin/neurontin is helpful with withdrawls from vicoden...I was wondering if anyone has used this while in withdrawl and if it did indeed help make withdrawls a little easier? Thank you for your help..I am currently trying to taper off vicoden..
Avatar m tn What I would like to know is if we can direct a doctor to the right literature on this and he/she is willing to help, can gabapentin and tramadol be used to treat children for this condition of neurogenic cough and how would we find accurate dosing help? Would the typical dosage amounts of these meds used to treat children for seizures be applicable for this condition? If these medications cannot be used in children for neurogenic cough, what other alternative meds would be helpful?
Avatar f tn I was originally prescribed neurontin for my sciatic pain. It didn't really help with th pain at all. I did some reading on it and found out it is used it some detox centers. So, I used it when coming off of hydrocodone. It made a huge difference. I'd say it took away 90% of the withdrawal symptoms. I only took it for about 7 to 10 days. It did help with the rls and sleep. The only thing that bothered me was a bit of anxiety.
393986 tn?1303825975 Gabapentin is used to help control certain types of seizures in patients who have epilepsy. Gabapentin is also used to relieve the pain of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN; the burning, stabbing pain or aches that may last for months or years after an attack of shingles). Gabapentin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. Gabapentin treats seizures by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Gabapentin relieves the pain of PHN by changing the way the body senses pain.
Avatar f tn am at present taking 2400 mg per day of gabapentin and find only some relief from pain and other feelings of discomfort. my GP thinks this level of medication is adding to my fatigue and tiredness.I was wondering if anyone knows of alternative drugs that can be used so I can go armed with info when I go to see my consultant....
Avatar m tn I never used the stuff but there is good info on a website about Gabapentin..the site sounds like encyclopedia...
Avatar f tn Good for you...anything that helps is great. I currently take gabapentin 4 times per day (300mg) and I use Dilaudid daily. When I run out before I pick up my next script I find that Gabapentin really helps with the restless legs, sleep etc. It is almost like a universal drug. I heard that Gabapentin used to be used for Opiate withdrawl but I can't remenber where I heard that from. WEhat have you headr about Gabapentin and it's uses?
Avatar n tn They are both used to treat nerve pain (neuropathic pain), but gabapentin can be useful in treating other pain syndromes, like the pain of peripheral neuropathy, or the pain of fibromyalgia. The only way to know if this medication will help is to try it, but I repeat, it is not used to substitute for opiate treatment, so you will most likely continue your morphine and oxycodone while trying it. Pain management, like football, is a game of inches.
Avatar f tn I also take tranquilizers, those are powerful drugs and have to be used responsibly. And as for gabapentin, it is possible your doc thinks it may help it from experience in treating your condition, I don't know, but it is used for a number of things other than fibromyagia, including some muscle problems. Instead of gabapentin, I take its cousin pregabalin, altho I've been on both. I have severe lower back pain, it takes care of it.
Avatar f tn ) So from all the post above I am sure that you have figured out that the usual Rx of Gabapentin (neurontin) is usually used (off label) for Nerve pain..Also known as Neuropathy. Originally it was used for Seizure disorder. Gabapentin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. I too have not heard of this medication used "Off Label" for balance issues. It will be interesting as to how it is going to work though. So please keep us updated on how it works for you.
11119474 tn?1428702170 Hey everyone. Hope you are doing well - I am awaiting an appointment with the Neuro-Oncologist scheduled for May 5th, while I continue to have more and more trouble with my legs... . Anyway... here's my question. GN started me on Gabapentin 2 weeks ago. First week just 1 dose of 300 mg at bedtime. This week... add another 300 in the morning. Next week I go to 3 times a day. So, I'm now taking it twis\ce a day. The past few days, I'm particularly shaky feeling...
1740498 tn?1328962585 I'm going from 600 mg 1x day of gabapentin to 600 mg 3x day. I think that I can't just jump it like that. What has worked for you? My PCP did the increase not my [useless] neuro, and he didn't say I need to increase slowly. I'm just assuming that... since the guy who put me on 600 mg had me start with 300 for a few days then 600.
Avatar f tn I just started Neurontin (gabapentin). I'm on 100mg this week and next week I go up to 300mg. The 100mg is making me SOOOO dopy. Is this normal? What are other side effects? How bout the liver and kidneys?
Avatar n tn Gabapentin (Neurontin) is not addictive. It was originally used as an anti-seizure medicine and now is also used for nerve pain. I believe, though, it needs to be tapered and that if you're on it, you shouldn't just quit CT as it can possibly cause seizures. I've been on and off it for nerve pain, and some of the side effects are really bothersome to me. If you're not prescribed Gabapentin, don't take it. It is a serious medication.
9472198 tn?1556168148 Hello al! I have type II diabetes, which I see a doctor for. I no longer need meds for this, as I keep my diet in check & exercise daily. My blood sugar levels are within normal range now. My problem: I have a painful rash on my buttocks {butt crack actually LOL} for about 2 months & my doc sent me to a dermatologist. He recommended beta/clom ointment & I have used it every day after thorough cleansing....as well as alternating with triple antibiotic cream.
