Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin used for pain

neurontin

1983221 tn?1333506185 I take both gabapentin and amitriptilyne (Elavil) for my neuropathic foot pain. I started with 300mg gabapentin and worked my way up to 3600mg. I take 1200mg 3X/day. By itself it didn't do that much for my pain. We added 25mg amitriptilyne to the gabapentin and I saw some relief. We upped it to 50mg 1X/day and my pain was gone completely! I guess I'm luck not to have any side effects from either drug.
Avatar f tn ) So from all the post above I am sure that you have figured out that the usual Rx of Gabapentin (neurontin) is usually used (off label) for Nerve pain..Also known as Neuropathy. Originally it was used for Seizure disorder. Gabapentin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. I too have not heard of this medication used "Off Label" for balance issues. It will be interesting as to how it is going to work though. So please keep us updated on how it works for you.
Avatar f tn Gabapentin is a good drug for some things, and not for others. General side affects are things like headaches, stomach pain, dizziness, dry mouth, sleepiness---the normal things that can happen when you go on any drug. Most of the time, gabapentin doesn't have extreme ill affects on anyone unless you skip a dose. I do know of people who say the drug can be addicted in high doses. Considering that you're just starting the medication, I wouldn't guess you'll be on a high dose.
8496079 tn?1398412516 Has the drug Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) worked for Fibromyaglia pain within a few days of taking this medication for the horrible pain from the Fibro? I was put on Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) yesterday by my doctor for my Fibromyalgia Condition in addition to the Norco 7.5/325 I can take up to 4 pills day as needed for the massive pain I'm in.
Avatar n tn They are both used to treat nerve pain (neuropathic pain), but gabapentin can be useful in treating other pain syndromes, like the pain of peripheral neuropathy, or the pain of fibromyalgia. The only way to know if this medication will help is to try it, but I repeat, it is not used to substitute for opiate treatment, so you will most likely continue your morphine and oxycodone while trying it. Pain management, like football, is a game of inches.
Avatar f tn Neurontin or Gabapentin is widely used to treat neuropathic pain. It’s off label use includes treatment of cluster headaches and chronic tension headaches. Gabapentin is known to cause dizziness, drowsiness which can explain mental fogginess and peripheral edema at high doses. Do you have any swelling in hands and feet? Gabapentin does not increase weight in any other way. I would suggest you to discuss this with your physician.
915369 tn?1355314810 I used gabapentin for pain and it worked quite well for that. My one friend says it is the first drug that has ever helped her bipolar. Its success rate with bipolar isn't that high, and it is almost always used with another drug. That being said for me it was side effect free so it may be worth a shot. The site crazymeds the good the bad and the funny of neurological medications (google crazy meds) has a sheet that lists gabapentin as an add on for bipolar.
6937315 tn?1386287618 My research on pain forums and drug websites, which is how this drug is usually used, for pain, shows that at the doses used for pain, which can go pretty high given this drug seems to poop out regularly, coming off is pretty much like coming off a benzo for at least some people, which makes sense since this is shooting pure GABA into your brain, bypassing your digestive system altogether.
Avatar n tn I was taking Gabapentin 300 mg for extreme nerve pain in my foot, it worked like magic for approx. 3 months then stopped being effective. Any Thoughts - Reasons?
Avatar m tn My question is, what can you tell me about Gabapentin? What is it used for? I heard that when it first came out it was used for Opiate withdrawl. Is this true? Thank you for your responses.
Avatar f tn I was on gabapentin (1200mg) a day for about 6 months but it didn't work for me. I have chronic back pain but it doesn't seem to be nerve related like they thought at first. It may be myofascial pain syndrome. My sister in law has nerve pain and she takes a combination of drugs such as a small amount of Lyrica , a small amount of an antidepressant, a small amount of lamictal and so forth. Be open to whatever the right combination is for you.
2034625 tn?1392643292 A few weeks ago at 11 am I was having some TN pain, and discovered I had not taken my 8 am meds, which includes 300mg Gabapentin. I am convinced Gabapentin works for me, and I am at the correct dosage...for now. If your Doc had ever experienced TN he would not postpone a prescription to treat it, guaranteed!
Avatar f tn I have taken Gabapentin before for pain and found it about as useless as a screen door in a submarine. Yeah I know the "top doctors" prescribe it. They also used to prescribe blood-letting. In addition it seems to lower a persons IQ by about forty points (I know...that's a figure of speech), cause loss of memory, headaches, and loss of libido. I think there are many alternatives to be considered before using Gabapentin, such as a frontal lobotomy.
Avatar f tn Hi, so I've been using gabapentin for withdrawal from hydromorphone. I used the hydromorphone to get off of fentanyl which Id been addicted to for 2 years. So I badly tapered of the hydro, and have been self medicating with gabapentin to nullify my withdrawal symptoms (about 2400mg 2x a day is what I've found at this point works best after establishing a tolerance).
Avatar f tn Thank you for posting this. I used Gabapentin briefly for nerve pain caused by my crippled back. It definitely made me feel 'high'. It also made me very 'shaky' and irritable. I quit taking it after about a week. Anyone who uses this drug to stave off wds needs to be very careful. Congrats on your time off of the vics, and good luck to you on your journey off the Gabapentin.
Avatar n tn Yes, Gabapentin is also used for pain. My daughter's dog was on it plus other meds. It was late last night when she reinjured her leg. We were just wanting something to make the dog comfortable until she could get an appointment with the Ortho specialist who did the surgery. She has an appointment today. Thank ou.
3135572 tn?1342657739 I have been on gabapentin for a while now. 900 mg 4 x day. I have not had any twitching from it. I used to have the twitching before I started the med. Everyone reacts differently, so I would suggest checking out the side effects you can find a more comprehensive list on line. Check out the manufacturer web site.
11079760 tn?1483386130 Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness for Pain Relief is similar to the Cognitive Therapy approach for people dealing with chronic pain. I've used several of his other mindfulness exercise recordings and have found them helpful. I'm not sure if the link will go through, but Amazon has it under "Mindfulness Meditation for Pain Relief: Guided Practices for Reclaiming Your Body and Your Life" http://www.amazon.
Avatar f tn Gabapentin is used for epilepsy treatment, although it is sometimes used to treat neuropathic pain. I don't think it will help you much as it doesn't bond to receptors as opiates do.
Avatar m tn ve heard that neurontin or gabapentin is great for stopping the nerve pain associated with withdrawal. Has anyone had experience with this?
1218873 tn?1300091216 It was explained to me that the highest dose that had an effect on neurological pain was 1800mg a day a higher dose may be used for epilesy but was not effective on neurological pain. Has anyone found pregabalin (which I believe is also known as Lyrica) to be more effective than Gabapentin?
Avatar n tn Hi and welcome to MedHelp. I also take percocet along with neurontin (gabapentin). The gabapentin is very similar to lyrica. I drink coffee 4-5 days per week and I haven't encountered any issues and I have been on percocet for almost a year and gabapentin for almost 2 years. I don't think there are any severe reactions when coffee is mixed with percocet or lyrica or both.
393986 tn?1303825975 Finally, I was precribed gabapentin. Within a couple hours the pain was gone. Gabapentin is for nuerologic pain. For me it was a god send. I think I would have done myself in by now otherwise. It is a very inexpensive drug as well.
Avatar f tn My orthopedic specialist tried switching me to Lyrica for 3 months back in 2014 with horrible immediate side effects. Switched back to Gabapentin. I am asking if there is another neuropathic pain medication to use as an alternative to Gabapentin. I agree that the Gaba helps with nerve pain, however the side effects are scaring me. I plan on discussing this with my PM but want to know more before going in.
Avatar f tn Gabapentin works for some people and not for others. Compression of a nerve or nerve root typically isn’t helped that much by medications unless the compression is relieved first. Medications can help ease pain but not numbness once the compression is relieved.
Avatar n tn Prometa which is just a trademark for a protocol using 3 drugs that have been around forever flumanzenil-originally used for overdose of benzodiazapines gabapentin-originally designed for seizure and hydroxazine-an antihistamine one of the first synthesized these three used together by an MD who prescribes for its use will be using the Prometa protocol not FDA approved as of yet.
