Gabapentin for lower back pain

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin for lower back pain

neurontin

Avatar f tn I have numbness on my right buttock and back of my right thigh for four weeks now. I also have lower back discomfort. I wouldn't even call it pain. I've had x-rays and an MRI. I just yesterday started having nerve twitches in my genital area. I'm positive it is related. My doc has set me up with a pain mgt doc next week. But how can pain mgt help the numbness to go away? It does not make sense to me.
Avatar n tn Thanks for your suggestions. I am getting some feeling back in my lower lip. I feel this is a good sign.

8496079 tn?1398412516 Has the drug Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) worked for Fibromyaglia pain within a few days of taking this medication for the horrible pain from the Fibro? I was put on Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) yesterday by my doctor for my Fibromyalgia Condition in addition to the Norco 7.5/325 I can take up to 4 pills day as needed for the massive pain I'm in.
Avatar f tn I suffer pain in my neck, shoulders and lower back. Recently my condition has become worse affecting my arms and the pain is severe. I am also a diabetic and suffer with neuropathy. I see a pain management doctor and have spinal injections every 12 weeks. I was prescribed Vicoden 10/325 for pain as well as flexeril and gabapentin. Neither the flexeril or the gabapentin seem to help with muscle tightness, spasms, or nerve pain.
Avatar f tn I became addicted to oxycodone 15mg in 2012 after my first back surgery, obviously I was on them while I was in the hospital for 7days after surgery then took them for about 4 days once I got home. I tried to stop and became sick and realized I was addicted. I go to a pain clinic for my chronic pain. Since then I had surgery on my elbow and just 2 weeks ago I had another back surgery. My oxycodone has never been upped in dosage so of course it doesn't help with the pain.
Avatar f tn Well, gabapentin does make a person sleepy, but in time the effects go away. It is used mostly to help with pain and sleep, altho it is also used to help people with other neuromuscular disorders like RLS. But from what I understand, the best medicine for Dystonia, among others, are tranquilizers, like Valium and Klonopin.
Avatar f tn My orthopedic specialist tried switching me to Lyrica for 3 months back in 2014 with horrible immediate side effects. Switched back to Gabapentin. I am asking if there is another neuropathic pain medication to use as an alternative to Gabapentin. I agree that the Gaba helps with nerve pain, however the side effects are scaring me. I plan on discussing this with my PM but want to know more before going in.
Avatar f tn m not saying Gabapentin is the cause of pain for anyone, but I know that for my mom and myself, it added to the pain it was supposed to be helping. Had I known what I know now (isn't that always the case) I would never have taken any of those meds. As I said, I don't know if the medication is causing you any adverse affects, but it might be worth your time to look into it and discuss it with your doctor. I have more information I could share with you if you want. Just let me know.
Avatar n tn They are both used to treat nerve pain (neuropathic pain), but gabapentin can be useful in treating other pain syndromes, like the pain of peripheral neuropathy, or the pain of fibromyalgia. The only way to know if this medication will help is to try it, but I repeat, it is not used to substitute for opiate treatment, so you will most likely continue your morphine and oxycodone while trying it. Pain management, like football, is a game of inches.
Avatar m tn Thank you all for your insight. I'm prescribed Gabapentin because I have chronic pain in my lower back....and thats why I also take the Dilaudid. I have been taking both drugs for over three years now and I do want to kick them both to the curb. I am accually talking to someone on this site who is a huge help to me and a great person besides. This is a fantastic site with alot of support.
Avatar f tn It does sound like nerve pain. Have they tried gabapentin (Neurontin)? It works well for me.
Avatar f tn Hi could anyone help me please?
11079760 tn?1483386130 My drug regime after the op was what stopped me having pain with Optic Neuritis the following Jan/Feb - foxed them for a bit as no pain or swelling (I was loaded up on pain killers and anti inflammatory meds!). Led to my MS diagnosis in the end though as MRI was Christmas Light show time on my optic nerve and brain! If all else fails I'm with you on a large G&T! Kill or cure eh!!
Avatar f tn Thank you for posting this. I used Gabapentin briefly for nerve pain caused by my crippled back. It definitely made me feel 'high'. It also made me very 'shaky' and irritable. I quit taking it after about a week. Anyone who uses this drug to stave off wds needs to be very careful. Congrats on your time off of the vics, and good luck to you on your journey off the Gabapentin.
1001737 tn?1324499915 hi, i'm a 24yo male. I've been having lower back pain for about 5 years now. And my doctors have given up, "We tried all that we could have done." Recently I've started noticing other things and not knowing if they are normal, - When I'm reading a book in bed, is it normal to feel fatigue, strain, discomfort in my lower arms and shoulders? (after about 7-9min.
1805240 tn?1317228731 Lyrica is sometimes considered a stronger form of gabapentin. Gabapentin is generic for Neurontin and Lyrica is brand name for Pregabalin. There have been several posts online from patients taking Lyrica, saying that the side effects are more severe than with Gabapentin. I have never tried Lyrica so I don't know if that would be the case for me. Everyone is different though.
Avatar f tn I hope the injections do work for you, in the mean time because your problem is a nerve one as well as localised pain ask your Dr about gabapentin which can help with nerve pain (still need other pain killers but they, like tramadol can be taken alongside the gabapentin. Take care.
1983221 tn?1333506185 I take both gabapentin and amitriptilyne (Elavil) for my neuropathic foot pain. I started with 300mg gabapentin and worked my way up to 3600mg. I take 1200mg 3X/day. By itself it didn't do that much for my pain. We added 25mg amitriptilyne to the gabapentin and I saw some relief. We upped it to 50mg 1X/day and my pain was gone completely! I guess I'm luck not to have any side effects from either drug.
Avatar f tn I'm taking gabapentin for TN and occipital neuralgia (I assume is probably lessens the tingling in my arm and leg as well) and most of the time I have reasonable pain control. However, there are times when the pain really flares up and I'm not sure if there's anything I can do for that. I don't know if gabapentin (neurontin) has a "short term" effect--e.g. if I took an extra dose, would it help?
Avatar m tn I have recently seen a new surgeon over lower back pain , injury disks 1 through 5 with two of the disks ruptured one disk broke off and the neurologist choose to leave it in my back for a year in "hopes" it would "dissipate" causing a year of pain and lost time at work.I had the piece removed and have had the same symptoms since causing me to move to 2 different pain management clinics and this surgeon is the third I've seen.
Avatar f tn You always have the best information or where to go to get it. Thank you and I looked up the website but I don't think it will help me. I am currently taking Imitrex for the migraines which do help for now and baclofen (muscle relaxer) to help me sleep and I take Xanax when needed for my anxiety/panic attacks but it can also sometimes help for the pain I have noticed now.
