Gabapentin pain treatment

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin pain treatment

neurontin

Avatar f tn Possibly if the gabapentin does not work speak with the Physician about "lyrica' .it is a refined form of Gaba and seems to have good clinical success for neuropathy ..off label I find it personally better than gabapentin Best...
Avatar n tn They are both used to treat nerve pain (neuropathic pain), but gabapentin can be useful in treating other pain syndromes, like the pain of peripheral neuropathy, or the pain of fibromyalgia. The only way to know if this medication will help is to try it, but I repeat, it is not used to substitute for opiate treatment, so you will most likely continue your morphine and oxycodone while trying it. Pain management, like football, is a game of inches.
Avatar f tn My brother has allodynia, for 2 mos now,his drs gave him gabapentin, pregablin, methycoval as his mdcine, but he is still in pain and cnt sleep,he is also taking sleeping pills but nothng seems to work.
Avatar m tn I have recently seen a new surgeon over lower back pain , injury disks 1 through 5 with two of the disks ruptured one disk broke off and the neurologist choose to leave it in my back for a year in "hopes" it would "dissipate" causing a year of pain and lost time at work.I had the piece removed and have had the same symptoms since causing me to move to 2 different pain management clinics and this surgeon is the third I've seen.
Avatar f tn I was prescribed Gabapentin for upper abdominal pain that was unexplained by my psychiatrist until my appointment with a GI doctor. It turned out I have a nerve issue in the abdominal wall, and the "fix" is Gabapentin. Aside from having a dizzy feeling for a couple of hours after the first dose (300mg) I have tolerated the drug extremely well. I noticed no other side effects, and was only dizzy for a few hours. I have no idea why it works, but it does.
Avatar n tn If diligent work up is already done, and the cause is still not determined, then the treatment is directed directly towards the symptoms. These treatment may be pharmacologic (through medications like the gabapentin) or local steroid treatment. I suggest that you discuss with your doctors regarding a possible pain specialist referral (these are mostly anesthesiologists that subspecializes in pain management) for a better pain management. I hope your pain can be managed adequately soon.
Avatar f tn My doc has set me up with a pain mgt doc next week. But how can pain mgt help the numbness to go away? It does not make sense to me.
Avatar f tn Apart from that, triptans, over the counter pain killers could be given as an acute treatment. Neurontin , B- blockers and gabapentin may be considered as a prophylactic treatment. Please consult a neurologist for a better insight after a thorough clinical examination in your case. Hope it helps.
Avatar f tn I have taken Gabapentin before for pain and found it about as useless as a screen door in a submarine. Yeah I know the "top doctors" prescribe it. They also used to prescribe blood-letting. In addition it seems to lower a persons IQ by about forty points (I know...that's a figure of speech), cause loss of memory, headaches, and loss of libido. I think there are many alternatives to be considered before using Gabapentin, such as a frontal lobotomy.
293157 tn?1285873439 Because I seem to be responding better to this latter drug, I am now slowly weaning off the gabapentin. I guess if the pain increases as I go off the gabapentin, this will tell me it was helping more than I realized. I have no side effects from the gabapentin, even at such a high dose. I do find the 50mg amitriptyline makes me very drowsy, and may need to scale it back to 40mg if this side effect continues.
Avatar m tn Hi, I am on 3000 mg. of Gabapentin now too, and I'm finding it does not seem to help the pain and spasms in my legs. I am also on Baclofen, and tried Zanaflex but coudl not tolerate the Zanaflex., even at a small dose. The Baclofen seems to help with spacisity, but not the pain, so we still have the stiffness and pain, and that ICE COLD feeling that we get in the calf muslcles of my legs. Why are you going off the Gabapentin?
531519 tn?1307632685 Thanks Shelly i can only see the neuro on a Thursday. I am going private for my treatment as my husband gets private health care through work, i'm very lucky to have it as the electrical tests im waiting to get if i was with our NHS i would wait [ 2YEARS ] for an appointment, outrageous is'nt it .
Avatar f tn I am not suggesting you not take this medication, but I would consult a pain specialist for other alternatives. Taking Gabapentin is a sort of Faustian bargain.
Avatar f tn Gabapentin is a good drug for some things, and not for others. General side affects are things like headaches, stomach pain, dizziness, dry mouth, sleepiness---the normal things that can happen when you go on any drug. Most of the time, gabapentin doesn't have extreme ill affects on anyone unless you skip a dose. I do know of people who say the drug can be addicted in high doses. Considering that you're just starting the medication, I wouldn't guess you'll be on a high dose.
1310035 tn?1305621642 Neurontin (brand name for gabapentin) helps with nerve pain. It is very commonly used in MS. Another med for this purpose is Lyrica. If one doesn't work or the side efffects are too much, then the other can be tried, but the two are very similar. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn Neurontin or Gabapentin is widely used to treat neuropathic pain. It’s off label use includes treatment of cluster headaches and chronic tension headaches. Gabapentin is known to cause dizziness, drowsiness which can explain mental fogginess and peripheral edema at high doses. Do you have any swelling in hands and feet? Gabapentin does not increase weight in any other way. I would suggest you to discuss this with your physician.
Avatar m tn ive been diagonosed with lymes and have had the line in my arm and been on tablets for five months and no improvement on the max amount of gabapentin now and nothing, the pain in my hips are getting worse and my knees are suffering aswell.
Avatar f tn Hi could anyone help me please?
Avatar f tn Sorry guys I lent on the keyboard and posted it before I had finished. I meant to ask Julie about the gabapentin. Does the Gabapentin actually make your neuro exam better? Like I know if you are on the Gabapentin obviously your symptoms would not be so bad but that shouldn't change what they see on exam with the hammer etc.?? As if I do decide to go ahead with my neuro appointment I will stop the Gabapentin..mmm if I can. My neuro exam is abnormal anyway but...
Avatar f tn I hope the injections do work for you, in the mean time because your problem is a nerve one as well as localised pain ask your Dr about gabapentin which can help with nerve pain (still need other pain killers but they, like tramadol can be taken alongside the gabapentin. Take care.
Avatar f tn I was put on Gabapentin and ibuprofen but was NEVER told this was the assessment. Been in chronic pain for 5 years now, after a hysterectomy. What is the best treatment. Am on 2400mg Gabapentin and 60mg of Cymbalta, but don't really want to have to take this for life.
Avatar f tn I also use Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation and Therapeutic Dressage (horse back riding) for pain control. A lot of my pain is made worse by a weak core and stress. I have to keep my core strong, stretch, and use mindfulness to keep the stress down.
Avatar f tn However, Neurontin is a relatively safe and effective treatment for pain. Many patients with painful neruopathy have used Neurontin for many years. Typically the side-effects include somnolence, dizziness, and imbalance. Since you have been using Neurontin for 9 years, there does not seem to be a problem continuing it, even at a slightly increased dose. Also, Neurontin is not known to be triggering/escalating Alzheimer's disease. Best..
