Gabapentin for nerve pain

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin for nerve pain

neurontin

Avatar f tn Gabapentin works for some people and not for others. Compression of a nerve or nerve root typically isn’t helped that much by medications unless the compression is relieved first. Medications can help ease pain but not numbness once the compression is relieved.
Avatar f tn The only possible scenario that I can think of to use gabapentin for balance is that it is given for neuropathy (nerve pain ) and the doc thinks perhaps the nerve pain will go away and you will have increased proprioception (the sense that tells us where are body parts, i.e. arms and legs, feet, etc. in relation to the ground and other body parts). Still I think that's a HUGE stretch, even off-label.
Avatar m tn There are alot of different medications to try for nerve pain. The one your on isn't working well for you , probably due to a tolerance to the medicine. Take the Dr.'s advice.
Avatar f tn It is a generic for Neurontin, which is prescribed as an anti-seizure med, but off label is prescribed for nerve pain. It usually takes higher doses for nerve pain. I was taking 900 mg per day, 3 am, 3 noon, and 3 nightly. Now I take 3 at night and 2 during the day. I am on other pain meds to help with the pain from 2-level cervical disc herniation and multi-level DDD and radiculopathy in my arm, hand, back and leg.
Avatar f tn So at the end of the day have faith in your own feelings as you know what you are feeling and experiencing and I think you will find that most people find Gabapentin is very helpful for nerve pain and MS symptoms and it is just a matter of finding the dose that gives relief to you personally.
Avatar f tn I have neuropathic nerve pain from a botched neck spinal fusion 2013. After 2 more spinal fusions to correct the problem it was determined that the problems i am having cannot be corrected. I am left with permanent damage and neupathic nerve pain. To add to it my lower back has disc compression issues. I have been getting injections for this when its unbearable, but im apprehensive about surgical treatment.
Avatar n tn I was taking Gabapentin 300 mg for extreme nerve pain in my foot, it worked like magic for approx. 3 months then stopped being effective. Any Thoughts - Reasons?
Avatar m tn How do you relieve pain from a pinched nerve to back and lower buttock
Avatar m tn There is a drug called Lyrica that is supposed to work better than the Gabapentin. You might give that a try. I have nerve pain as well and the only thing that has helped me are the opiates. Sorry I cannot give you more advise.
Avatar n tn I too am on Gabapentin. I take 600MG 3 times a day and it has helped me with nerve pain. I was only getting the injections until I was rear ended and now my L4 to S1 is now herniated with a tear at S1 with disc protrusion. That is why they put me on Gabapentin. I have been doing the injections for a few years now and with a good doctor the injections will last longer then others. I would not worry yourself about the injections and blocker doing more damage.
Avatar f tn I take 900mg 3X a day of gabapentin for a total of 2700 mg. It really really helps with nerve pain. I haven't gained any weight on it, but I monitor my food intake very carefully. I don't think it makes you gain weight per se, but makes your appetite increase. So as long as you know what your food intake is you should be OK.
Avatar f tn It depends on if you have nerve or muscle pain or both. Plus many of us have issues besides MS. I for example have MS and Cancer. I also use Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation and Therapeutic Dressage (horse back riding) for pain control. A lot of my pain is made worse by a weak core and stress. I have to keep my core strong, stretch, and use mindfulness to keep the stress down.
Avatar f tn I was prescribed Vicoden 10/325 for pain as well as flexeril and gabapentin. Neither the flexeril or the gabapentin seem to help with muscle tightness, spasms, or nerve pain. I am seeing my doctor again in two days and I wondered if any one could tell me of medications that have worked for you. I have a high tollerence to medication, most do not make me sleepy at all. I have tried Tizanadine in the past but for some reason that medication gives me bad headaches.
1359227 tn?1282522148 Now I have unexplained full body nerve pain and it brings the pain down from a 10 to a 6 on most days and my dose is slowly being raised, so I suspect I will soon be relieved of the full body nerve pain. Thankfully gabapentin is the generic for neurontin, so if your pharmacy gives you the generic and you have decent insurance, you're only out a couple of bucks and a few days of pain if it doesn't work for you and then you can just try something else.
3135572 tn?1342657739 So, they reduced me down to 100mg 3x daily. I am still having severe nerve pain in my leg and hip. I have injections every 3 months which usually help a great deal. I am curious about one thing in particular. DOES ANYBODY ELSE SUFFER FROM MUSCLE OR NERVE TWITCHES AND JERKING? I am due to go to a new neurologist on monday and in a couple of weeks i got to my pain doctor for my injections.. HELP!
Avatar f tn It does sound like nerve pain. Have they tried gabapentin (Neurontin)? It works well for me.
Avatar f tn t know about the itching but I do know about Gabapentin. It made me nutty lol. My dr put me on Gabitril for my nerve pain and it worked wonders with no side effects. I do know you should talk to your dr if you have not already about lowering your dose on your own. Medications like this are sometimes worse to take yourself off of and need to be monitored by a dr.
772218 tn?1249131067 I'm not sure what's causing the pain but I have nerve damage in my legs the doc has me on gabapentin (neurontin) I can't say that it helps a lot but it takes some of the pain away. Maybe you should consult your doc and see if it would help you.
Avatar f tn I was on gabapentin myself for nerve pain. It didn't help my nerve pain at all. It caused me to become very nervous and on edge. I told my neurologist about it and she wanted me to continue taking the med. Well another week goes by and I keep having these freak out episodes. Now I am in severe pain and I am freaking out. Nobody wanted to be around me cause they felt they needed to walk on eggshells. I called the neurologist again. She cut my dose to 100 mg.
Avatar f tn My 10 year old son was perscribed gabapentin/neurontin (in combination with a few other drugs) for his nerve pain. It definitely helped but the side affects are a huge trade-off. He gained a considerable amount of weight too but I attruibuted that mostly to the fact that all he did was eat, sleep & be foggy - and wasn't able to be his normal active self. He's since been off the meds and the weight has come off too as he's now able to resume most his normal activities.
Avatar f tn My family member said she has a drug called gabapentin and said maybe it would help me thru the tough part of my wd. As its a med for nerve pain. The worst is the crawly skin for me..anyone had any experience. I don't want to take something that is going to minimize the pain then once I stop taking that it come on stronger than before. As I've heard with people taking tramadol for wd. Please advise.
359574 tn?1328360424 I'm on gabapentin right now for nerve pain. There isn't any real problems to worry about. It does take a little while to kick in, though---I didn't notice results until 2 months on the pills. Also, if your dosage is increased, you might feel a little dizzy the first few days as you adjust. Otherwise, I like the results I've been given.
1146870 tn?1261519635 I am looking for some relief for nerve pain after a stroke. My right side is total pain all the time. It hinders my everyday life.
Avatar f tn Traumatic neuropathy may be managed by systemic administration of gabapentin and/or amitriptyline with titrating dosage.nutritional supplement with Vitamin B1,B6, B12, folic acid and omega 3 fatty acid is helpful for nerve healing. Seeing a neurologist who is experienced in managing traumatic neuropathy is advised.
Avatar n tn It may never work, it is given for nerve ending pain in my case I took it for 12months, also tried pregabaline, to no avail, I only speak personally of the drug, my partner took it for years for perlifiral neauropathy thought to have been brought on by alcohol abuse, he has stopped taking it 6 months ago pain is no better or worse. My pain for Erythromelalgia was not helped. I hope you are more successfull with it. It is usually increased gradually, and stopped gradually. Good luck Anita.
