I've used Lyrica for several months now and I am finding it very hard to tolerate the side-effects, although it does a good job of reducing pain significantly.
Anyone have any side effects from starting neurontin or suggestions on how to adapt to using it.
It's kicking my butt so far, so only taking it at night but a bit zoozy in the mornings. Am on 300mg,
have titration orders but don't want to add any more at the present until I adjust to this night dose.

Sorry this happened to you. These types of drugs all have side effects you do have to watch suicidal tendencies. I didn't have any suicidal problem with Neurontin. However, after taking Klonozepam about a week or two after I got suicidal. I didn't even know it until I was sitting there and I dumped the whole bottle in my hand and was going to take it. I wasn't even depressed before being on the drug. I somehow didn't take it thank God. I put the pills back in and cried.

Trileptal is a newer drug than Tegretol (carbamazapine) and is supposed to have less side effects than Tegretol.
You do have to have blood tests every three months because it can affect the sodium levels in your blood, which could lead to kidney problems.

Gabapentin is a good drug for some things, and not for others. General side affects are things like headaches, stomach pain, dizziness, dry mouth, sleepiness---the normal things that can happen when you go on any drug. Most of the time, gabapentin doesn't have extreme ill affects on anyone unless you skip a dose.
I do know of people who say the drug can be addicted in high doses. Considering that you're just starting the medication, I wouldn't guess you'll be on a high dose.
Hi...Gabapentin is not a generic for Lyrica, but Neurontin...Lyrica is used to treat Fibromyalgia....and many times chiari is mis-dx'd as Fibro...the symptoms for chiari r similar to many diff conditions which is y getting a dx can be diff and many drs r more familiar with the other conditions then they r with chiari, so they feel it can not be chiari.

My orthopedic specialist tried switching me to Lyrica for 3 months back in 2014 with horrible immediate side effects. Switched back to Gabapentin. I am asking if there is another neuropathic pain medication to use as an alternative to Gabapentin. I agree that the Gaba helps with nerve pain, however the side effects are scaring me. I plan on discussing this with my PM but want to know more before going in.
Sometimes, I can take Gabapentin and have almost no side effects at all. I am always impotent when I take Gabapentin. Is it dangerous to take the medication on an occasional basis and risk having the side effects?
This is a very old thread regarding Gabapentin. I assume that is the drug that is being ordered for you at 400mg.
Pain and swelling of the extremities can be a side effect of the medication, Gabapentin. Some ppl develop side effects such as swelling while others do not. I encourage you to discuss this with your prescribing medical provider.
It's important to to determine what is causing the swelling. It may or may not be the Gabapentin. Only your PCP can help you uncover the cause.
Hi, is anyone else taking Gabapentin for nerve pain and are experiencing side effects?
Since being on it for a week now I’ve noticed pain in my abdomen, neck, maybe even a little in my groin area too.

The only possible scenario that I can think of to use gabapentin for balance is that it is given for neuropathy (nerve pain ) and the doc thinks perhaps the nerve pain will go away and you will have increased proprioception (the sense that tells us where are body parts, i.e. arms and legs, feet, etc. in relation to the ground and other body parts).
Still I think that's a HUGE stretch, even off-label.
I was on gabapentin after spinal injury, and decided that I was better off without it. The medication didn't do much for pain, but had the side effects you talked about, plus it caused confusion. I did not feel safe driving while under this medication. Everything is a risk/benefit situation, and I suggest you have a long talk with the prescribing physician if you experience problems.

So at the end of the day have faith in your own feelings as you know what you are feeling and experiencing and I think you will find that most people find Gabapentin is very helpful for nerve pain and MS symptoms and it is just a matter of finding the dose that gives relief to you personally.
Actually my face feels stiff at times and cheeks get sore. If it is the gabapentin, what would be the alternative? Thank you med help family........
