Gabapentin for sciatic nerve pain

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin for sciatic nerve pain

neurontin

Avatar f tn Gabapentin works for some people and not for others. Compression of a nerve or nerve root typically isn’t helped that much by medications unless the compression is relieved first. Medications can help ease pain but not numbness once the compression is relieved.
Avatar f tn I hope the injections do work for you, in the mean time because your problem is a nerve one as well as localised pain ask your Dr about gabapentin which can help with nerve pain (still need other pain killers but they, like tramadol can be taken alongside the gabapentin. Take care.
Avatar f tn I have told several people who have had this type pain and they have gotten their dr to prescribe for them and it has worked well for all of them. It did not help my back pain but certainly was a miracle for that sciatic nerve leg pain.
1415174 tn?1453243103 I have been on Gabapentin for sciatic/nerve issues and it's changed my quality of life. Had a spinal fusion @ Mayo Clinic back in 1982 and as of the past 5-6 years have had an issue with numbness, nerve pain down my right leg and into my foot (L4-L5) impingement. It no longer flairs up, since the Gabapentin Rx. I'm on 300mg/3 x/day and it's been a game changer. Best of luck to you.
Avatar n tn Hi Welcome to our community, I must say how sorry I am that you had such an experience. I have some thoughts, and I think Im right , we are volunteers not Drs , so you must follow up and check this out w /dr , I will advise. Your seeing the correct specialist, good for you. What has Dr said about Sciatic Nerve damage? sound like problem to me...they can do a EEG to determine this. I think maybe you should find a new neurologist get another opinion.
535884 tn?1270898471 Hello Suec, Apparently you suffer from sciatic nerve pain. I do also. It is a horrible pain. I can relate and I am sorry that you are experiencing pain issues with your sciatic nerve. Ouch! Some years ago it was thought my pain was from my femoral nerve. Through a PM Clinic I was offered something similar to Radio Frequency Ablation but this procedure would basically have "killed" the nerve. I declined the procedure and I am so glad I did.
1319727 tn?1274328754 Usually that kind of pain is from a prolapsed disc impinging the sciatic nerve so it made sense doing the MRI. BUT if isn't showing any nerve impingment there check out piriformis syndrome (PS) In this case the piriformis muscle, in the bum, can spasm and as the sciatic nerve runs just underneath and in some cases through the muscle it can irritate the sciatic nerve at this point. Google it and You Tube Dr. George Best and Dr. Aaron Filler they explain it much better than I can here.
Avatar n tn ve been on gabapentin(neurontin)1400-1800mg for abt 5 years for sciatica...and other nerve pain. It has been a God send for me allows me to sleep at night without that throbbing pain. gabapentin is an anti-seisure medication, there are others in this catagory that I'v read that are also good.
Avatar m tn If my injection did directly hit my sciatic nerve, would the pain be immediate? Since I was allergic to it, could the swelling have irratated the nerve? What would the appropriate treatment option be? Could there be permanent damage, or will the nerve heal? I recently saw an orhopedic, after a suggestion that they could help my sciatic problem. They did a MRI, that showed nothing wrong with my back, but the orthopedic told me that I had foot drop, and hyperreflexive reflexes.
Avatar n tn for neuro related pain (from nerve damage, shingle, peripheral neuropathy) , sometimes for depression and anxiety and other psych issues. While it is not a narcotic, it needs to be slowly tapered when discontinued.
Avatar m tn Question for everyone....I am taking Gabapentin for "permanent" sciatic nerve damage. The Gabapentin works great, aside from the fact that I get brain fog and drowsiness. This drug separates me from pain, however, makes me a zombie! Does anyone know of a drug or supplement that I can take with the Gabapentin to combat the somnolence?
Avatar f tn Neurontin/Gabapentin is dosed differently than many other medications... The therapeutic levels are usually from 1600mg to 3600mg daily. So, your Dr. is starting you at a very appropriate dosage.. If you feel that the weekly tirating dosage is going up too quickly...just speak with your Dr. Neurontin, just like Lyrica and Cymbalta are actual nerve pain meds so it's no surprising at all that you are getting good relief from your sciatic nerve pain.
Avatar f tn hi Punkie..........thats a good question and I have the same pain from the buttocks to the hip and radiating to the thigh and down my legs..worse on left side........I have 2 problems and this pain could be caused by either one doctor says one thing the other says different so gets very confusing. 1. it very well could be caused by the bursitis in our hips, although from what I understand that pain should only radiate as far as the thighs and not necessarily down the whole leg. 2.

Avatar f tn Hi, Thank you for your question. Burning sensation, numbness or tingling sensation in any part of body is considered nerve related in origin. This burning sensation you are having can occur due to impingement, irritation or compression of nerve of thigh. Most frequently involved nerve is lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh (which is branch of femoral nerve). This condition is called meralgia paraesthetica which manifests itself as pain, tingling or burning sensation of outer thigh.
Avatar m tn What could you recommend to use for nerve pain other than Lidocaine patches. I have been using the patches with wonderful relief for 2 years and now Aetna says they will only cover them for post hepatice neuralgia. They even denied my doctor's appeal. Two years ago I had laminectomies of L2,L3,L4,L5,S1 after many ESIs and SJIs. I also have my sciatic nerve running through my piraformis muscle. The surgery got rid of most of my back and sciatic pain and I no longer use a walker or wheelchair.
Avatar m tn When I followed up with my regular doctor, he suggested that perhaps the initial injection may have swelled up and hit my sciatic nerve. (He said that if the injection had been directly to my nerve it would have been quite painful, and I don't recall having pain during the procedure, just gradual numbness.) He started me on a course of prednisone for the possible swelling, and referred me to a neurologist. The prednisone didn't seem to help.
1307610 tn?1273349327 hi Millie, I feel for you dear. I have had sciatic pain for at least 15 yrs....for a long time deep therapeutic massage therapy helped, still does somewhat. Have also been going to acupuncture treatments off and on for 4 yrs....this too helps somewhat. Opiates do not help sciatica!!! about 7 yrs ago I was put on a medication called neurontin (gabapentin) an anti seizure medication. this has given me alot of relief, of course it needed to be increased over the years to be therapeutic...
1283286 tn?1312911966 I ha back surgery last month to fix a bulge on L-5 which was pinning the sciatic nerve. The procedure involved removing the ruptured material in order to give the nerve the space it would have under normal circumstances.. Two weeks after surgery I started having a repeat flairup of the pain I was experiencing prior to surgery which in the past week has come back with a vengence. Last Weds I had a followup MRI done to see if it could reveal what was going on.
Avatar f tn How in the world can you make the sciatic nerve pain go away! I'll be 39 weeks tomorrow and since 25 weeks or so I've had this horrible sciatic pain that doesn't let me walk at times, it gets really intense! Any pain relievers aside from Tylenol or warm pads?
Avatar n tn is it possible for a fall to result in sciatic nerve problems with no back pain
1943408 tn?1325582497 Understand that opioid medications do not do much for sciatica as sciatica is nerve pain. Nerve pain is very hard to treat. I am on the Fentanyl patch and I STILL deal with a lot of sciatica. I also take Gabapentin (brand name is Neurontin) and it does help with the sciatica a lot more than the Fentanyl. Gabapentin is an anti-convulsant prescribed off label. I also take Fentanyl for extreme low back pain and myofascial pain syndrome.
Avatar f tn The only possible scenario that I can think of to use gabapentin for balance is that it is given for neuropathy (nerve pain ) and the doc thinks perhaps the nerve pain will go away and you will have increased proprioception (the sense that tells us where are body parts, i.e. arms and legs, feet, etc. in relation to the ground and other body parts). Still I think that's a HUGE stretch, even off-label.
Avatar n tn I went to my doctor yesterday for a regular appt and told her about my pain. She referred me to a physical therapist for sciatic nerve pain. But who knows how long that will take before I actually see one. I woke up this morning with the pain way worse. I can hardly walk or even stand up. Anyone have any tips or tricks to help with this? When/should I call my doctor again because the pain has gotten worse. Id say defiantly a 9.
Avatar f tn Today, I just started experiencing some pretty incomfrotable leg pains that start in my back and extend down my right leg. From what I've researched it seems to be sciatic nerve pain. Has anyone else experienced this? What did you do for pain relief? Im 16w 5d right now.
