Common Questions and Answers about Effectiveness of gabapentin for nerve pain

neurontin

293157 tn?1285873439 At first I took it for Restless Leg Syndrome, and then when the nerve pain started, tried to increase my dose of gabapentin. I did have trouble with side effects when I raised it. With Lyrica, I take a much lower dose, and it helps both my RLS and some of my nerve pain. When my nerve pain is really bad, I add Tegretol, fairly low dose, and that helps a whole bunch.
681148 tn?1437661591 Anyone who has taken Gabapentin (Neurontin) for a couple of months for the nerve pain post Shingles outbreak: What was the dosage you took to deal with the nerve pain and how long did you take it before the nerve pain stopped? I'm not concerned about the safety of the Neurontin at the low dosage I'm taking. I'm actually more concerned about the effectiveness.
Avatar f tn Hi Jules, I was on gabapentin for a while and my doctor switched me to lyrica which I have to say works much better for me than gabapentin. I would recommed lyrica to anyone who has nerve pain.
Avatar f tn I feel like 75mg of Lyrica is nowhere near covering the 800mg of Gabapentin I was taking. So now he changed it to 75mg/2x a day of Lyrica and 800mg/2x a day of Gabapentin to be taken together. Everything I've read says not to take them together. Sorry for the long post, it's my first one and I'm in a lot of pain. Just wondering if anyone had any insight on this?
11079760 tn?1483386130 I have now fully weaned off of Gabapentin. After several months of constant right arm pain - mostly in my deltoid - I now only have intermittent pain episodes. However, my hand and neck sensations of being swollen have returned to about 50% of their worst. My right hand dexterity has definitely declined again :( I also have to note that I've been on vacation from my desk job for a week - so maybe it was all the computer work putting the strain on my arm?
Avatar n tn I hope you continue to do well on the lyrica and get ample pain relief from the nerve pain you have. I also deal with a lot of nerve pain and I know that it can be very painful and difficult to tolerate at times. Keep in touch and if you have any more questions, I will be more than happy to try to help!
Avatar f tn Gabapentin works for some people and not for others. Compression of a nerve or nerve root typically isn’t helped that much by medications unless the compression is relieved first. Medications can help ease pain but not numbness once the compression is relieved.
Avatar f tn The only possible scenario that I can think of to use gabapentin for balance is that it is given for neuropathy (nerve pain ) and the doc thinks perhaps the nerve pain will go away and you will have increased proprioception (the sense that tells us where are body parts, i.e. arms and legs, feet, etc. in relation to the ground and other body parts). Still I think that's a HUGE stretch, even off-label.
293157 tn?1285873439 If you read the HP on Nerve Pain, which was written by a pain management doc, you will see that there are only two kinds of pain - regular pain and neuropgathic pain. When pain does not respond to "pain" meds, the other alternative is that it is neuropathic pain. Rather than spending time and money to verify what you already have evidence of it makes sense to try what is called a diagnostic trial of a med for neuropathic pain. A diagnostic trial can do two things.
Avatar m tn There are alot of different medications to try for nerve pain. The one your on isn't working well for you , probably due to a tolerance to the medicine. Take the Dr.'s advice.
Avatar f tn It is a generic for Neurontin, which is prescribed as an anti-seizure med, but off label is prescribed for nerve pain. It usually takes higher doses for nerve pain. I was taking 900 mg per day, 3 am, 3 noon, and 3 nightly. Now I take 3 at night and 2 during the day. I am on other pain meds to help with the pain from 2-level cervical disc herniation and multi-level DDD and radiculopathy in my arm, hand, back and leg.
Avatar f tn I have told several people who have had this type pain and they have gotten their dr to prescribe for them and it has worked well for all of them. It did not help my back pain but certainly was a miracle for that sciatic nerve leg pain.
372366 tn?1284403873 Carbamezepine is FDA-approved in the US for use in Trigeminal Neuralgia, which is one of the most severe nerve-pain syndromes known. It is also approved for use in diabetic neuropathy which can be severe and is often of a burning nature. Take a look at that discussion. It is still on the first page. I am going to try to write up something a little more comprehensive on treating nerve pain. I know very little about it and the issue comes up a lot.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Gabapentin for nerve pain in my neck and down my shoulder to my arm, I have not been able to supply names of people, movies, places and all sorts of words would not come to mind until I read about the side effects - 48 hours later - all of the information has come pouring back in - hopefully with everyone else it isn't permanent - I was on 1800 mg a day, prescribed by my pain management doctor - I am not taking anymore!
559187 tn?1330782856 One of the oldest nerve pain meds is carbamezepine (brand name Tegretol). It can be very useful for many kinds of nerve pain. It is especially known for one of the most painful of all, called Trigeminal Neuralgia (neuralgia = nerve pain). This is a condition in which the nerve that brings back sensation signals from the face to the brain is damaged and sends excrutiating pain signals back. The first line drug to try is carbamazepine. I used it for TN and it was VERY effective.
Avatar f tn So at the end of the day have faith in your own feelings as you know what you are feeling and experiencing and I think you will find that most people find Gabapentin is very helpful for nerve pain and MS symptoms and it is just a matter of finding the dose that gives relief to you personally.
Avatar n tn I was taking Gabapentin 300 mg for extreme nerve pain in my foot, it worked like magic for approx. 3 months then stopped being effective. Any Thoughts - Reasons?
Avatar f tn I have neuropathic nerve pain from a botched neck spinal fusion 2013. After 2 more spinal fusions to correct the problem it was determined that the problems i am having cannot be corrected. I am left with permanent damage and neupathic nerve pain. To add to it my lower back has disc compression issues. I have been getting injections for this when its unbearable, but im apprehensive about surgical treatment.
Avatar m tn How do you relieve pain from a pinched nerve to back and lower buttock
Avatar m tn I had a knee surgery (minor compared to yours) some years ago and the pain was excruciating. You must be very uncomfortable. Nerve pain is one of the most severe and difficult to treat of all pains. It sounds like you are on appropriate medications but are they at high enough doses to control your pain adequately? You may never be pain free but your pain should be more controlled. My suggestion would be that you discuss an increase or maybe a change of medications with your physician.
Avatar n tn I too am on Gabapentin. I take 600MG 3 times a day and it has helped me with nerve pain. I was only getting the injections until I was rear ended and now my L4 to S1 is now herniated with a tear at S1 with disc protrusion. That is why they put me on Gabapentin. I have been doing the injections for a few years now and with a good doctor the injections will last longer then others. I would not worry yourself about the injections and blocker doing more damage.
Avatar f tn I take 900mg 3X a day of gabapentin for a total of 2700 mg. It really really helps with nerve pain. I haven't gained any weight on it, but I monitor my food intake very carefully. I don't think it makes you gain weight per se, but makes your appetite increase. So as long as you know what your food intake is you should be OK.
