Gabapentin for acute and chronic pain

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin for acute and chronic pain

neurontin

Avatar n tn Acute post op pain is very different than treating chronic neuropathic pain. There are other options that the anesthesiologist and pain management specialist can use post op. Shoulder replacement surgery recovery is painful and difficult, so the earlier you can make post surgery pain treatment planned the smoother your recovery period will be.
4705307 tn?1447970322 Outcome and Management The case reports of hepatic injury due to gabapentin were followed by complete recovery without evidence of residual or chronic injury. No cases of acute liver failure or chronic liver injury due to gabapentin have been described. There is no information about cross reactivity with other compounds having similar structure (pregabalin). In general, gabapentin is well tolerated in patients with hypersensitivity reactions to other anticonvulsants. http://livertox.nlm.
Avatar f tn Neurontin , B- blockers and gabapentin may be considered as a prophylactic treatment. Please consult a neurologist for a better insight after a thorough clinical examination in your case. Hope it helps.
Avatar f tn Hi I was also given it for pain and it did not really help the pain.....but, the issue I had with this med was I already had IBS and this only made it worse while I was on it. So, I stopped using it.....I am now on Topamax to help with my HA pain....and it works better then the gabapentin did.
428886 tn?1217682034 Do you just become chronic after so long or can you stay acute for the whole time of Hep C infection? And another question is: this viral load issue, can the vl stay low forever or will it always grow in number over the years? The folks here seem to have better, plain english answers.
Avatar m tn There are some web sites out there that let you input all your meds and supplements, and check for side effects and adverse interactions. Another good source of information is your local pharmacist.
Avatar f tn His last episode and thus far the worst was preceeded by months of severe eye pain and after resolution it lingered for several more months. He saw numerous eye specialists and finally ended up at our large university hospital with the "best" ophthalmology surgeon in the state. His labs were elevated and it was a real mystery. There was lots of guessing. But I'm sorry to tell you that a reason was never found.
1855076 tn?1337115303 but usually they will move someone to a long acting medication and then have medications like the Percocet or OxyIR for breakthrough pain when a flare hits. So...if your prescription has been to take the full 50mg a day of Oxycodone for more than a few months and you take this every single day...then it seems very appropriate to move to Oxycontin or another ER (extended release) meds. I use MSContin as my ER med and OxyIR 5mg for my breakthrough pain.
Avatar f tn I was on gabapentin (1200mg) a day for about 6 months but it didn't work for me. I have chronic back pain but it doesn't seem to be nerve related like they thought at first. It may be myofascial pain syndrome. My sister in law has nerve pain and she takes a combination of drugs such as a small amount of Lyrica , a small amount of an antidepressant, a small amount of lamictal and so forth. Be open to whatever the right combination is for you.
Avatar m tn I was on them for about 6 months for severe and chronic back pain. I just had a 4th epideral shot and its seems to have worked finally. I also have had to detox cold turkey from Norcos and it was horrible for about 2 weeks. I wanted to die. They say its like coming off heroine. I tried to quit the dilaudid too fast and felt those symptoms again so they are the same with any drug. cold sweats, chills, diahria, stomach cramps, constant swallowing my own saliva, clammy, aches.
8496079 tn?1398412516 Has the drug Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) worked for Fibromyaglia pain within a few days of taking this medication for the horrible pain from the Fibro? I was put on Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) yesterday by my doctor for my Fibromyalgia Condition in addition to the Norco 7.5/325 I can take up to 4 pills day as needed for the massive pain I'm in.
393986 tn?1303825975 Finally, I was precribed gabapentin. Within a couple hours the pain was gone. Gabapentin is for nuerologic pain. For me it was a god send. I think I would have done myself in by now otherwise. It is a very inexpensive drug as well.
1080243 tn?1262975363 Antidepressants - several of them - work well for chronic pain, though not so much for acute pain. Also, Carbamazepine is used for the severe pain of Trigeminal Neuralgia. Carbamazepine, gabapentin, pregabalin (lyrica), and several others we use were developed as anti-seizure meds. Then they were discovered to have great effects on different kinds of pain - mostly neuropathic pain. I think of it this way. Pain come from unhappy and spazzing nerves.
Avatar f tn I became addicted to oxycodone 15mg in 2012 after my first back surgery, obviously I was on them while I was in the hospital for 7days after surgery then took them for about 4 days once I got home. I tried to stop and became sick and realized I was addicted. I go to a pain clinic for my chronic pain. Since then I had surgery on my elbow and just 2 weeks ago I had another back surgery. My oxycodone has never been upped in dosage so of course it doesn't help with the pain.
Avatar f tn Neurontin is an epilepsy drug--it has a number of "off-label" uses and one is chronic pain. The Elavil at nite is for pain management and anxiety. Of the two GABA is the drug with the most serious side effects--like Steven-Johnson syndorme--so you really should educate yourself and learn about the drugs and then find out for yourself if you want to take this medication. Do the benefits outweigh the risks of this medication?

Avatar f tn Is this acute or chronic.
Avatar f tn I get burning, sharp stabbing/shooting type pain, electric shock like pain, pins and needles, prickly sensations, numbness and some times my lower legs can be sensitive to touch, it feels like the pain runs down a set nerve, it is mainly in my legs, groin/pubic area, of late the pain in my pubic area has been so intense it can cause bladder leakage., I also get some painless twitching.
Avatar f tn I have taken Gabapentin before for pain and found it about as useless as a screen door in a submarine. Yeah I know the "top doctors" prescribe it. They also used to prescribe blood-letting. In addition it seems to lower a persons IQ by about forty points (I know...that's a figure of speech), cause loss of memory, headaches, and loss of libido. I think there are many alternatives to be considered before using Gabapentin, such as a frontal lobotomy.
