Gabapentin for itch

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin for itch

neurontin

Avatar f tn I had an episode of burning on my forhead and cheeks and pins and needle feelings in which I started Gabapentin for. Over a 4 week period I gradually increased the dosage to what I am on now, 300mg three times daily. This seems to help greatly with the nerve pain but I started after 2 weeks to develop a very itchy neck, ear lobe, and face. My face sometimes looked like it was burned. Im just wondering if anyone has had this while taking Gabapentin.
608526 tn?1300956781 Thanks for your reply! I have 4 lesions in my brain. I am on a 300mg dose of gabapentin per day for 2.5 yrs now. I know that is a low dose and I need more, but they make me so loopy that I'm really dreading it! I have been on combinations of amytriptiline, gabapentin, nortriptiline and carmabenzeprine they all make me feel that way! I can't see my dr until april 19th, any suggestions on what I should ask for with regards to my needing more meds and the way that they make me feel?
1821238 tn?1318382041 I have a deep itch on my upper left shoulder and also a burning pain almost like I have a pulled muscle. The itching is driving me crazy. What can I do?
Avatar n tn t figure out something that could fix an itch permanently or even for the time being.. Gabapentin worked well for a year or so, but I think I have become immune to it. Please see if you can help....
1936411 tn?1333831849 ve heard of that might help with the itch are trying the over the counter antihistamines or antihistamine hydroxyzine (Atarax), anticonvulsants (e.g. gabapentin, carbamazepine, phenytoin), antidepressants (e.g. amitriptyline, paroxetine, mirtazapine), and even Pregabelin (Lyrica)....
1140169 tn?1370185076 I stayed on a high dose for maybe 10 days, then gradually tapered down. I still need gabapentin for painful parasthesias in my right leg and foot, but a relatively small dose. Still having tongue issues, which I've had several times throughout the MS stuff, not anything I can't deal with. What caused what is still something I haven't been able to unravel. I just know that every other possible cause had been ruled out, and that nerve pain medicine worked.
Avatar f tn My left or right arm (always one or the other-never the same time) will itch extremely bad -under the skin -Claritin or Benadryl will help some but it comes back within 12 hours. I wrapped my hand in a small towel and put pressure on the itching arm and it sibsided a little. Sometimes there will be no itching and then all of a sudden -a jerk kinda under the skin and itching. Could this be caused from some kind of nerve damage?
Avatar m tn My question is - I have a spot on my chest right along where my bra band runs that hs the phantom itch. The itch is so painful, I itch it thinking there will be relief but, instead just irritate the skin. The bra band rubbing on that spot drives me nuts. Not wearing a bra is not an option, I work and have larger breasts, not wearing a bra would be really inappropriate. The best way to describe it is the bone itches. The area is approximatley 3 inches around.
Avatar m tn I was finally diagnosed with the condition after 2 years of trying various prescription topical creams (Elidel, Pramascone, Steroid Creams, Anti-fungals etc.) and oral medications (Pregabalin, Gabapentin, etc.) Is there any procedure I must have done to confirm my condition? Is there any particular specialist besides a dermatologist who would treat this condition? I have been to several dermatologists and most are clueless of the condition.
Avatar f tn So I was on gabapentin for 2 and a half years. I have fibromyalgia and chronic pain from scoliosis. I'm already prescribed tramadol. When they put me on it, it helped me a lot. But I started getting a rash. But I had no clue it was from my drug. Looking back it's the ONLY thing it could be from. I've got spots all over the back of my arms and legs. Some are scars from the ones that where healing. But they wouldn't close!
Avatar m tn Hi there, If it is JUST on your forearms from about wrist to just above the elbow, it could be Brachioradial Pruritus. There's many different reasons arms itch uncontrollably, but many cases of BRP is caused by cervical damage of some kind. I am also a sufferer for about 9 years. I do have a severe disc herniation at C5-C6 compressing the spinal cord centrally. I'll explain a little of how this happens, most people with herniated discs feel pain, tingling, numbness, weakness etc.
Avatar n tn My forearms itch me to death. No rash. Only the hair stands up straight on my arms. But the itch is not relieved by any antihistamines, no matter how many or how long I take them. I have been perscribed some topical treatments, however they are too temporary of relief too. Steroid pills helped while on them, but now im off and the itch is back. Guh! It has to be an allergic reaction to something?!
Avatar f tn For about two years now, I have had this unbearable itchy forehead, head and back of neck pain. I itch and itch, and then it gets sore from itching, and the process begins all over. The inside of my ears and nose even itch. It feels like little pin pricks all over and when I touch my head, my hairs at my scalp hurt. I've gone to many, many doctors, and none have diagnosed or helped. All I want to do is be still on the sofa. It has drastically affected my social life, and I am miserable.
Avatar f tn Until we worked out her reaction was from the coating on the pain killers she was taking for her wisdom teeth, it went on daily for weeks and kept getting worse as it built up in her system. DS has the same reaction to anything with a preservative, colouring or flavouring though he goes off the wall hyperactive too. Thought it worth mentioning in case you hadn't considered it before :D Cheers.........
1983221 tn?1333506185 I also applaud Gabapentin (neurontin) it works well for me also but does take some tapering or getting used to, I should say

I believe I am either going crazy ..Please help me...
Avatar f tn then I put on a long sleeved shirt and it seems to control the itch for most of the night! Hope this helps some of you!
681148 tn?1437661591 Anyone who has taken Gabapentin (Neurontin) for a couple of months for the nerve pain post Shingles outbreak: What was the dosage you took to deal with the nerve pain and how long did you take it before the nerve pain stopped? I'm not concerned about the safety of the Neurontin at the low dosage I'm taking. I'm actually more concerned about the effectiveness.
Avatar f tn I have just been diagnosed with BRP by my neurologist and I am so thankful to have a name for this terrible itching! I already take gabapentin for nerve itching in my face for a tumor I had removed in 2009 (It was benign...Praise God) She had upped my dosage on it and given me lidoderm patches to use on the arms as well. I want to try some of the other methods I have read about on this site. Thanks so much for all the advice from other BRO sufferers.
Avatar f tn The only possible scenario that I can think of to use gabapentin for balance is that it is given for neuropathy (nerve pain ) and the doc thinks perhaps the nerve pain will go away and you will have increased proprioception (the sense that tells us where are body parts, i.e. arms and legs, feet, etc. in relation to the ground and other body parts). Still I think that's a HUGE stretch, even off-label.
8496079 tn?1398412516 Has the drug Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) worked for Fibromyaglia pain within a few days of taking this medication for the horrible pain from the Fibro? I was put on Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) yesterday by my doctor for my Fibromyalgia Condition in addition to the Norco 7.5/325 I can take up to 4 pills day as needed for the massive pain I'm in.
Avatar f tn Gabapentin is a good drug for some things, and not for others. General side affects are things like headaches, stomach pain, dizziness, dry mouth, sleepiness---the normal things that can happen when you go on any drug. Most of the time, gabapentin doesn't have extreme ill affects on anyone unless you skip a dose. I do know of people who say the drug can be addicted in high doses. Considering that you're just starting the medication, I wouldn't guess you'll be on a high dose.
Avatar m tn Neurodermatitis develops when nerve endings in the skin become irritated, triggering a severe itch-scratch-itch cycle. Since the steroid creams have proven ineffective, so these medicines may prove effective. In such type of itching, cooling lotions like those containing camphor or menthol, capsacain or local anesthetic creams, amitriptyline and gabapentin tablets are effective. Please discuss these possibilities from a dermatologist.
189269 tn?1189755825 I am taking a drug called Gabapentin for the itching... it kills the itch at the source, nerve endings at your skin. Was taking Ursodiol for the hi bilirubin... did not help. I have been dealing with this for over 2 years, since the Telaprevir study I was in... yes I got the real thing and think that $hit is killing me.
Avatar n tn I have had an itchy perineum/anus for the past 8 years. It all started after the birth of my second child. (c-section) It started in the perineum area and then became a general perineum/anal itch. I've tried everything and I can't make it go away. I know 8 years seems ridiculously long without finding an answer, but that's not for a lack of trying! I've had a biopsy done on the perineum area, a scope put up my butt, tried literally every cream I can think of....
Avatar f tn I have been dealing with this severe itch for 6 years now. Not all the time but when it starts up again I'm up all night long with ice packs. I have tried everything and no relief! All your symptoms match mine/ the little blister bites/ the intense itching at night/ the strange bumps and feel of the skin!
