Avatar f tn If given a choice without cost factors pros and cons of Gabapentin versus Lyrica for long standing neuopathy pain in my back, legs and feet from surgery over 10 years ago...Any advise appreciated..
2107676 tn?1388973859 Hi Pat. just to let you know, I was prescribed Lyrica too, I know it is expensive but I have coverage, so it only cost me 20.00 but I found it never worked for me, and I have nerve pain ( nerve damage ), so the doctor gave me Gabapentin ( neurontin ) instead, to try,and I find it works much better than Lyrica and the cost is minimal, it cost me 4.00 for LOTS of them , sorry can't remember how many but it was a huge bottle.
Avatar f tn I took the Lyrica for a month started the second month and the side effects kicked in. I quite CT and didn't notice any WD's. Did the same thing with Gabapentin. I takes about a month for the side effects of the drug to start showing. I didn't know I wasn't to quit CT. I lucked out I guess. I wouldn't start taking it unless it was the last resort. I know a lot of people on it and it doesn't bother them.
Avatar f tn This along with the Gabapentin and Oxycodone and Fentanyl gets rid of the sciatica completely until later in the day it returns, which means more medicine. But I would at least try OTC Aleve. I also take one Aleve in the afternoon if I need it and also 1 at night to prevent sciatica in my sleep. I do also get epidural steroid injections about once every 3 months and I will take a four day burst pack of prednisone (an oral steroid) if I get into a flare inbetween injections.
1168718 tn?1464983535 t have very bright doctors and neurologists as some of you know, so.............. how do you know if you need to take 2400mgs. of Gabapentin, or would 18-or 1200mg work just as well..?? Silly question, I 'm sure, but I don't know who else to ask.
Avatar f tn Some people are experiencing severe withdrawal from gabapentin, this is from a severe magnesium depletion and can take a magnesium chloride either orally or transdermally a couple of times a day this will help or lesson or even eliminate the withdrawal from gabapentin.
1396846 tn?1332459510 My right foot was extremely painful to walk on for awhile, and to say it felt bruised is probably an apt description. It did eventually abate or...... maybe it's the level of Gabapentin I'm on but it's not a great problem now. My left foot has also caused me issues since June but that's more around the ankle itself. I'm nearly at the limit of Gabapentin so may have to look at something else soon.
1187071 tn?1279369698 I am sitting here thinking if he ups my meds like he wants to the side effect of weight gain will only get worse. I talked to the people where I get Gabapentin and they said that that side effect don't go away and if the dose is inceased it will only get worse so if the med isn't helping me there are other options. It also makes me tired which I can handle that one but not the weight gain, I have had problems with my back in the past and when I put on weight my back hurts.
Avatar m tn Such symptoms included agitation, disorientation and confusion after suddenly discontinuing Gabapentin that resolved after restarting Gabapentin. Most of these individuals had a history of poly-substance abuse or used Gabapentin to relieve symptoms of withdrawal from other substances. The dependence and abuse potential of Gabapentin has not been evaluated in human studies.
Avatar m tn I am of the opinion that a slow taper of 10% taper or wean per month is prudent with gabapentin if you have been on gabapentin long term (more than 1 year and at high doses (2000 mg.) or higher and you should be able to lesson severity of the withdrawal if any with magnesium supplements, check out the road back.org. they talk about the role of supplements to help lesson the withdrawal from all kinds of druggs not just gabapentin.
Avatar m tn I just got prescribed Gabapentin last month, for opiate withdraws. I googled the snot out of it, came up with lots of info........ it causes drowiness at high doses (stoned), and weight gain. I'm only taking 300 mg per day, (i've read stories of 2400mg per day) aslso read that at 1000mg for longer than a month requires a taper down so you don't get WD's from it.
293157 tn?1285873439 Also I know that this forum being what it is of course most pain here is likely to be neurological. I never did the trial with gabapentin, it is still in my fridge, out of date now I think. Who knows, it may have even worked for me...just had my opinions set from my experiences, which were of a patient group not typical of those here. Anyway, it's always good to get two sides of an argument, wobbly is either now very well informed or confused!
Avatar f tn His doc as tried all kinds of tablets but none have worked so far. A few days ago she put him on gabapentin and i just wondered if any of you have had it and if so does it help? Any thoughts or ideas will be much appreciated because the pain and lack of sleep is really starting to get him down.
Avatar f tn I have been taking vicodene for a number of years. Prescribed five a day. But of course I have found myself taking up to ten a day. Went to a new doctor today and he seems to feel the vicodene is no longer working so he had prescribed me gabapentin-100 mgs. three times a day. My concern now is withdrawing from the vocoden. doctor has suggested that I taper down to half a pill a week (of the vicodene). Of course I did not tell him how much I was taking of the vicodene.
Avatar f tn t really know how to describe it, but I HATED this! It was driving me nuts! Anyway, within a week of starting the gabapentin, those creepy feelings were gone. However, in the last week or so, I think I've started having straight-up nerve pain. Does this make sense? Some of the pain is the shooting kind down my limbs, but I've also noticed that some of the same previously cold/icky patches have now become painful - they sort of just ache.
Avatar f tn Hi FairyTree, I take a fairly low dose of Gabapentin, 300mg 1x at night. I think this medication helps with my chronic pain and I now rarely get headaches. When I go off of it, I hurt like crazy. All the joint pain comes back with a vengeance. The last time I missed a couple of doses, I hurt so much that I kept having to find a place to sit down while the pharmacist filled the order.
Avatar f tn I was on Gabapentin for a while. It did not make me have the IQ of a goldfish. The only problem that I had with them was they made me very sleepy. I started on 300mg a day then went up to 3xday. I had my own zip code, so I went down to 100mg a day, but still had the problem with making me sleepy. I also took Lyrica for a while, now that one made me feel like I was drunk all the time.
Avatar f tn I like the jokes :) That's what I try to do though few people either pick up on it or actually find them funny. I have one two friends who do as much of a medical relay as I do, and they'll laugh. My mom is one of the best, though, because she'll sit there talking about which doctors she prefers, parking times---everything that is absolutely irrevlevant to what we're actually at the hospital for. It deffinately comes in handy on surgery days.
Avatar n tn I am a 50 yr old male. I was prescribed Gabapentin for neurological pain management by the VAMC in Tampa, Florida. According to some post I've read, Gabapentin is a med that one must be weened off of. I've been taking Gabapentin off and on to help with pain so I can sleep. I don't take it all the time because of the side effects. Sometimes, but not all the time, I feel like I'm having a bad hangover after the medication wears off.
Avatar m tn But I still feel about the same. Pain in the back of my calf muscles, back of knees, both sides of knee and left lower back pain. Seems like the doctors are guessing. I have also be on Vicodin and Naproxen for pain.
Avatar f tn I had severe level-ten eat-the-gun neck pain and was prescribed Gabapentin many years ago. Gabapentin was addictive, caused confusion and lack of sentience, loss of mental functioning, anger, and headaches. It did absolutely positively nothing for the pain. I can only say this experience was anecdotal. I eventually ended up with a pain specialist, who straightened the issue out.
6937315 tn?1386287618 Like some (probably most) medications, Gabapentin should be tapered at the time of discontinuation. If medications are d/c'ed correctly, many people have no problems with it at all. I've never seen anyone experience a horrible detox from Neurontin, when they were tapered off. I've never seen anyone have any issues. It's a good reminder though, ANY medication should not be stopped abruptly without consulting with one's doctor.
Avatar f tn I take 300 mg of Gabapentin 3 x a day and it helps my fibro quite a bit..I can't take lyrica, my hands and feet swell, I also take meloxicam 7.5 mg 2 x a day ...
Avatar f tn This may cause nausea, pain, sweating, anxiety and lack of sleep. There may be increased severity of symptom treated with it. If you miss a dose, take the next dose on scheduled time. Certain side effects associated with the drug are dizziness, blurred or double vision, tremors, etc. consult your neurologist for the vision changes and gastrointestinal issues. He may prescribe you medicines to treat them.
Avatar f tn I was prescribed gabapentin for nerve pain once I decided to stop taking pain meds. I noticed that it helped with some of the withdrawal symptoms. It didn't completely take them away but they weren't as severe. It really helped with rls and a little bit with sleep. I've heard others say it helped them with opiate withdrawals also.
