Gabapentin and sciatica

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin and sciatica

neurontin

1943408 tn?1325582497 I am on the Fentanyl patch and I STILL deal with a lot of sciatica. I also take Gabapentin (brand name is Neurontin) and it does help with the sciatica a lot more than the Fentanyl. Gabapentin is an anti-convulsant prescribed off label. I also take Fentanyl for extreme low back pain and myofascial pain syndrome. I am NOT recommending Fentanyl for you as it would be way too strong. I would try Gabapentin or Lyrica first to see if it helps.
Avatar f tn I have tried Gabapentin, and I am currently taking Lyrica, which is a relative of Gabapentin. It does help a little, but not enough to enable me to sit down longer.
Avatar n tn Everyone responds differently to medications and treatments. My sciatica is caused by joint and muscle inflammation and swelling which than presses on the sciatic nerve. I do not have nerve entrapment. If the sciatica is caused by entrapment that the obvious solution or treatment should be to treat the source. If it is not, as mine is not, than the treatment is focused on the inflammation an adjustments of the structure involved. Gabapentin does not relieve my pain.
1083064 tn?1261491951 I'm on tramadol, gabapentin and diclofenic.. they help but make me very constipated and sometimes too drowsy. yes the gabapentin helps a lot!
Avatar f tn This along with the Gabapentin and Oxycodone and Fentanyl gets rid of the sciatica completely until later in the day it returns, which means more medicine. But I would at least try OTC Aleve. I also take one Aleve in the afternoon if I need it and also 1 at night to prevent sciatica in my sleep. I do also get epidural steroid injections about once every 3 months and I will take a four day burst pack of prednisone (an oral steroid) if I get into a flare inbetween injections.
Avatar f tn The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and travels from the lower spine to the foot and eventually toes. All the cold pins and needles etc are typical sciatica symptoms. What accident actually happened at work did u fall/trip? if so, onto what part of body? I fell onto my bum and have sciatica as a consequence BUT I don't have any sciatic impingment or disc prolapse or sciatic impingment in my spine.
1415174 tn?1453243103 I had sciatica. It was explained to me that it was impingement of a nerve most likely. I stretched like a demon. It did go away after some time of the stretching routine. https://www.healthline.com/health/back-pain/sciatic-stretches Also, ice and heat alternating helps.
Avatar m tn Check with a neurologist after eliminating simple causes like tight shoes. Treatment would be according to the cause. Drugs like amitryptiline, gabapentin, gabapentin etc may be required. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn It began yesterday - this incredibly painful throbbing feeling - like electric shock, in the middle of the back of my left thigh. They last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. It hurts to the point it I feel sick to my stomach. It's always in the same spot - and it's very rhythmic. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I have a very high pain threshold and this is probably an 8 on the pain scale while it's happening.
Avatar f tn Gabapentin for sciatica im on 2 x 50mg of tramadol 3 times a day so 300mg total and two x 300mg three times a day 900mg total of Gabapentin. Ive lost a lot of weight which has pretty much cleared up the sciatica. Thing is these last few days I've felt really depressed and low, this is what started me to think and look at this stuff almost pulling me to take more and i really dont want to, i want to come off them.
Avatar f tn I have taken neurontin for withdrawals from vicodin and it helped tremendously. I was originally prescribed neurontin for nerve pain due to sciatica but it didn't help with that. I read about it on the net and found it is used in some detox facilities for withdrawals. When taking it the only symptoms I felt were the chills, a tad bit of anxiety, and a little lack of energy. I have went cold turkey in the past without anything and can say that when I used neurontin it made a huge difference.
Avatar f tn I have recently been prescribed to Robaxin, Vicodin and Gabapentin for back pain/sciatica. Anyone have experience with these meds?
1340994 tn?1374193977 I take pregabalin (Lyrica), and its cheaper cousin is gabapentin (Neurontin), and they are anti-spasm type drugs, and I found relief from my lower back pain overnight and continue to take it for several years now. Aside from medicine, one good way to relieve sciatica is to do yoga type stretching exercises, but since he has spine problems, it's best for him to ask his doc if maybe some physical therapy could be ordered for him to ease the pain.
2207073 tn?1338931916 and now today my leg and back pain is very intense and none of my meds or ice seem to help..i take gabapentin 300mg tid and meloxicam 7.5 bid(not sure if these even work..plusa new rx for norco 7.5/325 and 10mg cyclopenzaprine tid..is the pain i experienced normal? and if the injection don't work what's next? This is going on 6 years of chronic pain..and my kids miss their mommy!
Avatar f tn That is the same way my sciatica was - only in the right side. Had a couple numb toes and felt like a stone bruise on the bottom of my foot along with the horrible pain in my leg. Mine was caused by herniated disc on the nerve. Had 2 laminectomy which failed and still had the sciatic nerve pain. I found out about a med called neurontin (generic is gabapentin) and within an hour of starting this med the pain had let up quiet a bit - the next morning the sciatic nerve pain was about 97% gone.
Avatar f tn hi Punkie..........thats a good question and I have the same pain from the buttocks to the hip and radiating to the thigh and down my legs..worse on left side........I have 2 problems and this pain could be caused by either one doctor says one thing the other says different so gets very confusing. 1. it very well could be caused by the bursitis in our hips, although from what I understand that pain should only radiate as far as the thighs and not necessarily down the whole leg. 2.
Avatar f tn Hi -am not an expert -but i would guess its nerve irritation -spinal or sciatica perhaps. get fair up the insurance company as they are not Dr's and u need answers. I find gabapentin great for nerve pain. -BUT u need to find a cause 1st. Go back to your Dr -even do a pain diary so its in black and white... best wishes T.
Avatar f tn I have been on Gabapentin for sciatic/nerve issues and it's changed my quality of life. Had a spinal fusion @ Mayo Clinic back in 1982 and as of the past 5-6 years have had an issue with numbness, nerve pain down my right leg and into my foot (L4-L5) impingement. It no longer flairs up, since the Gabapentin Rx. I'm on 300mg/3 x/day and it's been a game changer. Best of luck to you.
1295655 tn?1272467246 It is supposed to be rare but if anyone has I would be greatful for a response ? Mine is posttraumatic piriformis syndrome. Really it is SCIATICA but the sciatic nerve is trapped at the point in the bum where the piriformis muscle crosses it not higher up in the spine as in disc prolapse. The symptoms are similar but no back pain just bum, hip and groin pain.
19965699 tn?1487511518 I am currently taking 400 mg of gabapentin 3x a day along with, Metformin 500 mg 1 a day, Tripilix 135 mg 1 time daily, Tizanidine 4 mg 3 times daily, Diclofnac 50 mg 3 times daily, Nexium 40 mg 1 time daily, trazadone 25 mg 1 time at bed (for sleep), and escitalopram 10 mg 1 at bed, ibuprofin 600 mg as needed, and sumatriptan 25 mg as needed ft or migraines, I have looked up every drug interaction with gabapentin and found all safe to take except for my anitdepressent escitalopram 20 mg once
Avatar f tn I take 600 mg in the morning, along with two OTC Aleve, and one Oxycodone and the sciatica pain is completely gone within an hour and doesn't come back until late afternoon. I admit, I am also on the Fentanyl patch but I have been taking Gabapentin well before I started the patch and I know it was very effective for my nerve pain prior to starting Fentanyl. Good luck to you. Surgery to be a last resort option.
Avatar f tn Alternating ice and heating pad can also help. The person that I found best to help with sciatica was a physical therapist. I've had that pulsating therapy you describe at a chiropractor too. It definitely is weird, isn't it? I am not sure it ever helped. My chiro also did ice therapy. When he told me about it, I was like no way. But it did seem to have a positive effect. It pretty much is exactly as it sounds, icing the area thoroughly. I see you have tried some stretching.
Avatar n tn This is affecting both legs and is all night long. I take 1200 mg of gabapentin at bed time, one benadryl and two leg leg cramp with quinine and it is still unbareable any suggestions?
