Gabapentin and opiates

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin and opiates

neurontin

Avatar n tn Gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica) are similar medications that modulate pain transmission in the nervous system, but gabapentin and pregabalin utilize a different chemical pathway than opiates. They are both used to treat nerve pain (neuropathic pain), but gabapentin can be useful in treating other pain syndromes, like the pain of peripheral neuropathy, or the pain of fibromyalgia.
Avatar n tn Trying to taper off and get off opiates, morphine and oxy. can clonidine be taken at the same time to help with not having as much of the opiates? and help with the withdrawls?
Avatar n tn I have nerve pain and the only thing that works for me are opiates which if you can get along without them is good. Like I said, chat with your Doctor and see what he says. Please take care and good luck.
Avatar n tn It's actually starting to get better. I was able to play 18 holes Sunday morning. Haven't been able to get past 9 holes until then. I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel and am able to put this behind me. I think my saving grace has been that I avoided drugs while young. For whatever reason I don't have cravings or memories of anything other than opiods being a pleasant high that I can live without. Dr. Kevin McCauley calls it the Dopamine/Glutamate cycle.
Avatar f tn Sorry for your suffering...I tried Gabapentin for my chronic pain due to Crohn's a couple of years ago after going off the opiates. I didn't get out of bed for a month and lost 15 lbs (I weigh 110) I was sketchy and disconnected. I know everyone is different but the nerve drugs scare the crap out of me.
Avatar m tn I have a question regarding my doctors choice of pain management. I am a cancer survivor of about 5 years and have terrible headaches from my brain surgery and chemo didn't allow things no heal properly. Anyway, he refuses to give me anything besides this gabapentin stuff, I've been on it now for 2months and haven't noticed any relief and want to know what you guys think. And he also refuses to give me stronger meds in fear of rebound headaches.
Avatar n tn Well I do have the Hylands Restful Legs, and also Gabapentin. Just wondering will it actually help my leggs, and should I fear of this becoming addictive as well? At this point, Im 9/10 days clean, so sorta afraid to even take it. Or should I just try to ride the RLS out? Im seriously trying to get through this, can anyone tell me approx. how long their RLS lasted? And your opinion on starting the Gabapentin at the stage Im at?
Avatar m tn But it has also helped many. I just decided to research it after getting off opiates and antidepressants and soma ......and learned as much as I could about the drug. I made a PERSONAL decision to wean off of it after my info gathering. Just feel like my brain and body deserve a chance to tell me how they REALLY are without assistance from a drug of any kind. Blessings.....glad you found us!
Avatar f tn One more thing to add: Don't let fear freak you out too much. You are having surgery, and if you need to be on opiates afterwards, you can still come off of them. I'm living proof of that, and i was on a MUCH stronger drug than codeine. I'd stick close to what my doctor thinks I should do...and as my first post implied, when you are having your surgery, I would think, factors into this...
6815927 tn?1395511425 They switched me to the gabapentin and it did the same thing. My sister in law takes lyrica and swears by it so it all depends on the person. But I read where it's worse than herion to get off.
Avatar n tn you,ve done the right thing coming here....check out our experiences of opiates and of rls.....i obviously can't say if you would end up an addict and end up in a downward spiral but what does happen is the physical dependency with continued use and that can be a very difficult thing to deal with.....
5763738 tn?1373846792 This time seemed different, I wasn’t ready, my mind was all messed up and I wanted to curl up and die. I took my normal 300mg dose of Gabapentin and then left for work dreading what the next 3-4 days has in store. After about an hour or so at work I realized my sickness was not as strong as it was when I awoke. I soon had the idea of searching the experience vault for Gabapentin and came across several others who found Gabapentin to ease off the withdrawal symptoms.
464044 tn?1343702043 but after I was going into 3 wks clean, and still had the rls pretty bad, I went to my doc, he gave me gabapentin, and yes it did help, just wish I had gotten it earlier in my withdrawals. I to was afraid at first, but after it was the 3rd wk, and everything else had pretty much cleared up, I just could not take it another *** day. I will NEVER forget that RLS. I wanted to just cut my freakin leggs off with one swipe!!!
Avatar f tn It has to be weaned onto and weaned off of or you will feel effects...although some just stop taking it and are fine. My doc was opiates and I take Neurontin for my spinal stenosis. It took some time for my system to adjust to the side effects but I take it regularly and never crave it or take more than prescribed like I did with opiates. This is the difference for me.
Avatar m tn Hi, I was a member here years ago when I had a pain pill addiction. Haven't touched one in over 5 years thank God! However, I seem to have unknowingly gotten myself in a different jam so to speak. My husband passed away February 2015. I handled the anxiety for almost 2 years til January 2017 when I finally asked my nurse practitioner for help. I was very adamant on "nothing narcotic or controlled." She understood and we agreed on low dose of gabapentin.
Avatar m tn I was originally put on Gabapentin and had a quick large amount of weight gain. So they put me on Topamax to reverse the weight gain and for my migraines. It helped my migraines but within about 3 weeks I started having pins and needles sensation in my hands, which quickly started occurring in my feet. Within a week it went from pins and needles to a piercing pain as if being stung by bees and kept getting worse.
Avatar m tn I can't speak to opiates at all. My history as been with alcohol, benzos, and barbiturates. What I found is that there are indeed some places that can make tapering from those much more manageable, and that's what I did when I recently went off benzodiazepines. I'm not sure if the same is true for opiates, but if it is, in-patient is the route I'd go if I ever needed to do it again (my drugs of choice or otherwise). Okay, so the thing I'm concerned about here ...
1474625 tn?1371097079 I do need the meds but moved to a diffrent state and un able get them with out getting injections again. I got Gabapentin from my dr and in the morning i took 20mg opiates and a Gabapentin 6 hrs apart 3 times a day for 4 days and no withdrawls. Pain in my back hurt but helped the nerve pain with just Gabapentin. then was able to take 10mg opiates 2x and Gabapentin 3 x daily for 3 days. i currently take Gabapentin 3x a day .
Avatar m tn In feeling the need to add more information, I have also been on Diazepam (Valium) as a muscle relaxer, and Gabapentin (Neurontin) as a nerve block, and Meloxicam as an anti-inflammatory. Wisely I decided to go cold turkey on all 4 at the same time, probably not a good idea?
Avatar f tn The Brain is affected by this and it is trying to heal from the opiates still. So from what I have read and experienced from Hub, it is not a bad w/d, it is just a bit uncomfortable for some. You will be fine..Then go to the next one and taper a bit down and be done with these crazy meds that make us feel like crap. It is a lot harder to bounce back when we are older. I know for sure, and I do not care if any body does not agree. Been down this road for over 40 years..
Avatar f tn I have never taken it before in my life and got a hold of a few 300mg capsules the other day. I have been into opiates off and on for about 8 years, getting pretty bad into them this past year. I think it is alot mental with me though. I started off on Perc 5's and 10's, graduating to oxy 30's about a year ago. I was taking about 60mg a day of oxy which I know isn't a lot, but for me it was.
452136 tn?1236955402 I am 13 days clean from opiates will taken some niacin help with the chills and RLS.Enevabilly hopefuly getting me better each day.
Avatar f tn havent had wd symptoms more than a couple chills and sneezing, a far away, faint rls at bedtime....thats it. And I have detoxed before off tramadol and went through pure hell. I have no anxiety and ive had energy, i couldnt be happier.....its my miracle!
Avatar f tn t Gabapentin potentially dangerous to come off? My girlfriend had a hernia surgery gone terribly wrong and they put her on Gabapentin but stressed very seriously that she take it as advised and for no more than 2 weeks because of risk of seizures. I just wanted to throw that out there so that maybe you research before trying it. I am no professional by any means but I just wanted to look out for you.
