gabapentin and confusion

I had severe level-ten eat-the-gun neck pain and was prescribed Gabapentin many years ago. Gabapentin was addictive, caused confusion and lack of sentience, loss of mental functioning, anger, and headaches. It did absolutely positively nothing for the pain. I can only say this experience was anecdotal. I eventually ended up with a pain specialist, who straightened the issue out.

I also take gabapentin. Three weeks ago I stopped temazepam and tramadol. I am taking zolpidem every night now and continue gabapentin 3x a day. I don't crave either of the meds I quit, but I have been experiencing inability to concentrate, ringing in my ears, vomiting, blurry vision, sweating, confusion, anxiety and mood swings. The symptoms wax and wane and I can't find a pattern. The seem to occur as a cluster, meaning all symptoms occur together and come on suddenly.

The other day, I went to a Christmas party and left the gabapentin at home, so I missed a dose. I got a horrible stomach ache that night and was miserable. The next day, I took the medicine, and the stomach aches are gone. i also have gotten weird vision problems when I accidentally miss a dose. The little packet that came with my medicine said there can be vision changes and GI problems if you stop taking the medicine completely without medical advice.

"It is not a narcotic, therefore much easier to taper down your dose." I respectfully disagree. Gabapentin can be downright dangerous to come off if not done right, and in THIS case, we're talking very high doses. OP, I agree completely with vicki that you need to seek medical attention for this, and soon. You are risking very a serious health crisis taking the much Neurontin. PLEASE read the info below.

Withdrawal symptoms are seen if gabapentin is discontinued abruptly. These are usually anxiety, diaphoresis, irritability, agitation, confusion, and status epilepticus. The symptoms that are associated with gabapentin withdrawal tend to mimic some of those associated with ethanol and benzodiazepine withdrawal, possibly because gabapentin augments GABA levels like these.

I cut the Gabapentin to a lower dose and I think it was from another prescription Plavix and they changed it to Aggrenox I am doing fine now. Age is a bummer. I feel 30 but my body does not realize this! Smile.I appreciate your time and answer. Have a wonderful Summer.

when the pharmacy switched to the generic, I had similar psychological side effects similar to those from Lyrica and Gabapentin (confusion, stupidity, suicidal thoughts,...) I can only take the name brand. I have to pay hundreds of dollars for this, but the shooting nerve pain is so intense that I will continue to pay it as long as I can. I'm afraid for when I can no longer...

It was scary because mu mind would just blank out leaving me in a total confusion and embarrassing. I weaned myself off and didn't take them for years yet have also took a chance on them through the w/d process. This pill is joke and should be something people need to really lookin into and pray about before start this medicine.

I began taking Gabapentin for the electricity and muscle spasms in my legs. My initial dose was 100 mg at bedtime. Now, I am up to 100 mg 3 times daily. It has helped greatly, but recently I have been having some break-through spasms. I do not recall having had any "vibrations" from the medication itself.

I was prescribed vitamin d 5000 units and Gabapentin 300mg Capsules. Pain has reduced but numbness and disorientation still there. My hands also go completely numb periodically. Had an eye exam and further testing on my vision. Nothing explained the double vision. All tests to include spinal tap and EMG show normal. The strange thing is my legs felt great after the EMG, they usually feel like 100 pounds each. My skin also feels on fire.

I have taken gabapentin and xanax for 10+ years without problems. Xanax is a shorter acting benzodiazapine then librium. You may find you need less librium with gabapentin.

She referred me to a pain management doctor and physical therapist and also gave me a prescription for Gabapentin (100mg...take 100mg at night for 5 days, then 200mg a night for 5 days then 300mg a night). Has anyone taken it and found it helpful? Also what about the dose? So much that I am reading discusses much higher doses and talks about taking it 3 times a day. I had a migraine new to me about a month ago went to a neurologist he prescribed meythpredislone 21 pack and after that was completed he prescribed neurotin gabapentin which I am very afraid of taken but I started taken 1 before I go to bed. Why did the neurologist prescribed that if it was just for headaches?

I am currently using 8mg of buprenorphine,1800mg of gabapentin and 150mg of wellbutrin daily as medicine for pain management and nerve pain.Now I'cant obtain gabapentin anymore and would like to transfer to oxycodone 120mg daily as a substitute for buprenorphine and gabapentin.I would like to know is such change possible.

sciatic nerve damage. The Gabapentin works great, aside from the fact that I get brain fog and drowsiness. This drug separates me from pain, however, makes me a zombie! Does anyone know of a drug or supplement that I can take with the Gabapentin to combat the somnolence?

I have Congenital nystagmus and tried gabapentin but it seemed to be making the Nystagmus worse. I started taking bupropion at the same itme, and suspect the bupropion may have interfered with the initial trial of gabapentin. I need the bupropion for the anxiety associated with Nystagmus, but I know it causes blurred vision and convergence problems. Should I even bother to try memantine? Thanks.

I have tried Gabapentin, and I am currently taking Lyrica, which is a relative of Gabapentin. It does help a little, but not enough to enable me to sit down longer.

Hey nailbox.(That's quite original) Welcome to the forum! Can't say that your case is unique, as two thirds (2/3rds) of patients on gabapentin will experience adverse effects. There may be some changes in your symptoms, better or worse, more or less, if you wish to stick with it. You may also want to look into Picamilon , made by combining a GABA derivative and Niacin which is sold as an OTC dietary supplement in the U.S.A. Not sure where you live.

Karla, You may have Hemiplegic Migraines (HM), as I do. This is a rare form of migraine that has neurological complications that can emulate MS, TIA, stroke, etc. The symptoms are temporary however. As you have a history of migraines, you should see a migraine specialist and not just a neurologist.

I have had conversations about Gabapentin (and my intolerance to it) and I have learned through my own trial and error that it does take time for your body to adjust. I also know (through googling many different medications) that each time you adjust the dosage, that your body can have side effects. The side effects should get better as your body adjusts, but if they don't, you should definitely talk to your doctor about it.

So, for the past 6-7 months I've noticed that sometimes my urine has a strong musty, garlicky smell to it that immediately fills the entire bathroom and then lingers forever. It's not a horrible smell, but it's overwhelming and so strong. It could be diet, as I do sometimes eat food with garlic in it, but I'm wondering why this came on so suddenly when it was never an issue before.

Hi, I am on 3000 mg. of Gabapentin now too, and I'm finding it does not seem to help the pain and spasms in my legs. I am also on Baclofen, and tried Zanaflex but coudl not tolerate the Zanaflex., even at a small dose. The Baclofen seems to help with spacisity, but not the pain, so we still have the stiffness and pain, and that ICE COLD feeling that we get in the calf muslcles of my legs. Why are you going off the Gabapentin?

as far as I know, there is no generic version of Lyrica at this time... and Lyrica and Gabapentin are two completely different medications... if your doctor or pharmacist told you otherwise, they are incorrect. Gabapentin is generic for Neurontin, originally developed as an anti-epileptic, whereas Lyrica was developed specifically for treatment of neuropathic pain. They both work on the body's GABA receptors, but the mechanism of action is slightly different with each.
