Common Questions and Answers about Doxycycline resistance

Avatar m tn 1) Would 5 days of doxycycline and on day 6 the 1.5 g zithromax cure chlamydia if present? 2) I used zithromax back in july for an ear infections. Would this build up resistance against chlamydia due to overuse of zithromax?
Avatar m tn there have been only one or two reported cas of true resistance of Chlamydia trachomatis to doxycycline and/or azithromycin. If it works out that way, I would expect your doctors to write up a scientific report for publication. I that event, I would not venture a guess about the best alternate treatment to use; that decision would rest on the lab tests to determine the best choice.n However, I still would not worry about eventual treatment success; there has never been a C.
Avatar m tn About a month ago I contracted chlamydia with associated joint pain. I took a single 2g dose of azithromycin. Additionally, I have SIBO and constipation predominant IBS. The azithromycin helped with the chlamydia symptoms as well as the IBS symptoms, significantly alleviating my bloating. However, towards the end of the week I started having some urethral irritation again and fairly bad joint pain.
Avatar m tn I am currently on a 10 day regimen of two 100 gram doses of doxycycline for urethritis caused by as of yet unspecified condition. Unfortunately once I got home I took the first dose at 5 PM. Some friends came over shortly after wards and I caught myself having a handful or two of corn chips before it was even 5:45. I know you aren't supposed to eat anything for 2 hours after taking the medication and have since made it a point to stick to the regime.
Avatar m tn Later I was given single dose of 1 gm ceftriaxone and 100 mg doxycycline. Although it gave me massive stomach upset and and caused me to have hemorroids and fissures, I completed the course. which did not give me 100% relief. I went to see the doctor again and I was on 2 gm ceftriaxone IV for three days. which certainly did not work. i still had all the symptoms. finally Chlamydia was found out in culture test. Dr gave me 500 mg Azythromycin and 100 mg Doxycycline for 7 days.
Avatar m tn Problem started while I was taking minocycline for acne. Went in to student health. NP RXed 10 days doxycycline, 100 mg PO BID, sent me to ER. Had an ultrasound, confirmed it was epididymitis plus a hydrocele. They gave me a shot of ceftriaxone and told me to continue with the doxycycline. The ceftriaxone helped a great deal (swelling went down almost immediately) but as I continued the course of doxy the problem began to get worse again. I followed up with a urologist.
Avatar m tn Antibiotics are used if an epididymitis / infection is suspected. Fluoroquinolones are an option, although resistance of N. gonorrhoeae may limit their use. A cephalosporin (such as ceftriaxone) combined with doxycycline is an alternative. Azithromycin can be used for susceptible strains. In children, quinolones and doxycycline are best avoided.
Avatar m tn Many strains are resistant to antibiotics, especially tetracycline resistance. This means doxycycline, a commonly prescribed drug, will often fail in treatment. Resistance rates of 50% have been reported for ureaplasma and doxycycline. M hominis is resistant to erythromycin, azithromycin, and clarithromycin. Levofloxacin, another common drug, also has been shown to have a high failure rate for M genitalium.
Avatar n tn not so much against Gonorrhea. However, resistance to sulfa drugs has steadily increased and typically treatment for one includes treatment for the other.. and today Chlamydia is usually treated with doxycycline.
19413498 tn?1477669741 I went to the doctor who gave me a week of doxycycline, symptoms still persisted. I got tested for STDs all negative but doctor gave me azithromycin and a shot of rocephin in case of chlamydia/gonorrhea... Symptoms still persisted so I got a single dose of metridonazole for trich and that seemed to work. Then a month later i had an ear infection and got antibiotics for that. So essentially I took 5 antibiotics in 4 months, is this like really bad?
Avatar f tn Hi all, I’ve read about Ureaplasma online and it seems like there is unclarity on how someone can get it and also on the treatment and bacterial resistance. It seems like some doctors have suggested Doxycycline and others suggested Azithromycin as first treatment. Can you please answer these questions? 1. Should Doxycycline be the first treatment to try for 1 week, or Azithromycin should be tried first, or both should be tried one after other before the next test?
Avatar n tn Is it safe to do so, or will I be increasing the likelihood of the acne bacteria forming resistance and coming back stronger since I still have a few pimples?? If I do start to break out once I stop taking it, would it be okay or worthwhile to start taking it again? Thanks heaps!
Avatar f tn I had unprotected oral and anal oral followed by protected sex with a random woman. I'm not showing any signs but I do have a full treatment of doxycycline on hand and want to take it to nip any thing in the bud just in case. How long after the incident should I take it to be most effective? I know it's low risk sex, but I just want to take it to be sure without getting a test.
Avatar m tn Go to the doctor and they gave me Azithromycin (2 Days, 1G / Day) and Doxycycline (Twice a Day 100 mg for 7 days). After i finish treatment, they do an urin test and swap test. They said i still have bacteria in my body, so the doctor gave me Ofloaxcin (Once a day for 7 days). Waited one week and go back to the doctor and they test me again and its all fine.
Avatar m tn Hi, I'm a 29 year old male from the UK. I was recently diagnosed with Non-Specific Urethritis, after 3 months of undiagnosed symptoms (discharge, stinging). My doctor had previously prescribed me with a 2 week dose of Doxycycline, which I took. However, this didn't help whatsoever, as symptoms all persisted. Today I was given a 1000mg dose of Azithromycin, after inflammation was detected in a swab test.
Avatar m tn Is there a good chance that there was just a resistance to the Doxycycline and the Arithomcyin may prove more useful, despite no improvements so far? Or, do you think there could be something else happening?
1691275 tn?1322327507 ve been taking amoxcillin for a suspected Lyme infection for the last week (of a 3-week course), but my new doctor showed me some research that indicates doxycycline is better antibiotic for Lyme and its attendant infections - so he gave me a 3-week prescription. What he forgot to tell me was whether I should finish the amox first or if I can just switch right over to doxy. Anyone have experience with these two antibiotics? Thanks!
Avatar n tn I have no more posts to use, but if you could please indulge me, I'd really like to ask two follow up questions. In mid July, 6 & 10 weeks after exposure, I developed mild burning when urinating, along with a weak stream and anorectal bleeding with a bloated feeling in lower abdomen. I called my doctor who prescribed ciprofloxacin (without seeing me) 500 mg 2x daily for 1 week.
Avatar m tn I was given a shot of Ceftriaxone and a course of Doxycycline 100mg twice daily for 10 days. The symptoms I had were a burning sensation whilst urinating and a constant white/yellow discharge. The doctor I saw at the sexual health clinic has worried me somewhat since she said that the condition is becoming harder to treat due to resistant strains of the infection.
Avatar m tn I have been suffering from painful urination for close to three months now (without any discharge). In the first month i completed a round of doxycycline. During the second month I had a round of levofloaxacin while awaiting my full STD check results. When the results came out, my blood work showed non-reactive to all STD's, however a urethral swab test showed a minor presence of gram negative coccobacilli 1+.
Avatar f tn You won't get an std by touching someone's buttocks or a cut on their buttocks. That's anxiety driven and not going to give you an std.
Avatar f tn Hi, we are not doctors on these sites but I am a microbiologist and can give you some advice. It is rare to have Moxifloxacin resistance but it does happen. Since you both still have symptoms. Have you re-tested after treatment? If so I would wait about a week before re-testing to get the antibiotic out of your system. Yes usually after treatment of up to 14 days you should be symptom free unless it is a resistant strain or you have something else causing the problem.
