then the PCR test was done and results were positive for mycoplasma, so we did 3 weeks on doxycycline (cycle ended yesterday). some improvement, but now more sneezing and still some clear eye discharge. yesterday, our vet recommended 2-3 additional weeks on doxy, told me it could be allergies or just a stubborn mycoplasma infection. if 2-3 more weeks don't stop the symptoms, we could see an internist for a CAT scan and another test to look up the cat's nasal passages. any thoughts?

m a little red faced here....you are so right ali, I read URI and my brain was on UTI....duh...thx for bringing that to MY attention.. well sure don't need an urinalysis now.....man I feel dumb. however URI's are only sensitive to some antib's so again you will need a Vet to prescribe the right one. Cats with a healthy immune system can overcome this in a few days/weeks but cats with a weak immune system it can become fatal...and the cats should all be isolated or it will spread..

In October my 5 year old female cat received a shot of ampicillin and clavmox for URI. Although her sneezing with discharge has decreased somewhat, it still continues. We have 2 other cats who all share food/water bowls. One has mid-stage kidney disease so his immune system is compromised. Neither of the cats (nor any of the humans) she lives with show signs of URI. And believe me she's sneezed on everything and everybody!

When I was told I was negative I stopped medications because now my doc says I need to be off them for accurate results. Partner calls and is positive for chlamydia and negative for everything else (blood work not in yet). Shows me his paperwork I take pics to show my doc. Go to doc and get the treatment for chlamydia (single dose of azithromycin) take as prescribed. No sex. Still slight discomfort. No discharge no itch or odor. No discomfort when urination.

Ive been on doxycycline for 3 1/2 days, and the discharge has not gone away at all.. may have even worsened. My vagina hurts excruciatingly every time I pee. How long till the pain and discharge goes away?

The vet prescribed doxycycline 100 mg twice a day for 3 weeks. My dog seems fine without any obvious symptoms. Can we just give him the doxycycline 100mg once a day instead because the medication may cause nausea/vomiting. Also after 3 weeks medication, how do you he is treated ? Any advice !

Your cat probably has allergies or an Upper Respiratory Infection (cat cold). Now if you cat has the herpes virus and this URI is one of the symptoms, your older cat can catch it from her. Although if they have been together for sometime they are both immune or both infected already. Theses URI will happen several times a year. Nothing to worry about just whach that the mucus from their nose is not Yellow--then there is an infection and antibiotics will be needed. Keep us posted, K?

When antibiotics are prescribed for URI, it is not to cure or prevent URI but to reduce the risk of the sick cat getting a secondary bacterial infection while their immune systems are being taxed fighting off the viral infection., URI is highly infectious and is both air and contact borne. if you are not able to keep the cats vaccinated and completely separate, it will continue to recycle from cat to cat.
