Avatar f tn Did your vet run a heartworm test by chance? Is max on heartworm prevention every month? Did your vet happen to mention which parts of the heart were enlarged (right, left, generalized cardiomegaly?) Heart murmurs can definitely progress to failure and should be carefully monitored every 6-12 months if the patient is not clinical. They can stay the same grade for the rest of the animal's life as well.
1699033 tn?1514113133 They have done doxycycline for quite a while which she is now done with and i just gave her heartguard. It is sad really but half of their rescue dogs are HW positive. I'm not rich, otherwise I would pay for it myself.
230262 tn?1316645934 ANd by god it did work, years later, the dog finally tested negative for heartworm, and he didnt die from taking the meds. I think they say it can possibly cause anaphylictic shock in some animals though..
603946 tn?1333941839 She does feel some type of heartworm is necessary as the development of heartworm would be so bad for her. But rather than giving her the chewable heartworm she put her on Revolution which is topical for fleas, ticks and heartworm. Although I worry about the topicals also, I felt this was the better solution. So far, she's doing fine on it.
Avatar f tn I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the treatment and after care for a heartworm positive dog. The vet says the treatment has to be done but there is a chance the treatment itself could kill my dog. Any information or experience with this would be appreciated.
1650642 tn?1301582117 This means that if you opt to treat a heartworm positive dog with an ivermectin heartworm preventive only, you can expect the dog to remain heartworm positive for a good two years and the heartworm disease will be progressing during those two years. This is not good for the dog but certainly beats getting no treatment of any kind. This approach should only be considered for patients who are Class I and may be able to withstand two years of heartworm infection.
694466 tn?1227677802 If your pet has not been on heartworm preventive, it would be a good idea to take her to the veterinarian for a blood test. Is she sneezing or coughing? Does she bring up any phlegm when she coughs? Any discharge from her eyes or nose? Let us know how things go....
Avatar m tn Unfortunately not, she hasn't had the heartworm pills for over 6 months. Terrible, I know. And as mmuch as I hate to say it, because it's entirely my fault, But heartworm would be a better alternative to the CHF, no?
Avatar n tn Hello, I just acquired a very cool 4 year old dog from a friend of mine who had never taken the dog to a vet for shots or put her on heartworm prevention pills. I took her to the vet and got the shots and had her tested for heartworms and she tested positive. The vet recommended a $385.00, 2 injection treatment with a follow up visit, I believe, in 4 months.
1271055 tn?1270584019 I just adopted an adorable little pomeranian mix 4 days ago from K-9 Lifesavers and he is extremely weak and timid. He has very little appetite, which worries me because he is extremely thin. He also has been coughing a little lately, which also concerns me because he has tested positive for heartworm.
Avatar n tn He could just be having a dream. Dogs do dream and sometimes they will yip or even bark in their sleep, or paddle with their legs as if they are chasing something in their dream. You said, however, that you just got this dog. Getting a new pet is kind of on the same plane with getting a new car. You should have him checked out by the vet to make sure he is OK just because he is new to your family and you want to be sure that he is healthy.
4876325 tn?1360503479 If he is eating and digesting the food normally I think there is hope. While I don't know what the normal life expectancy for a boxer is, I'd guess more than 19 years. I can't suggest any treatment, but think it best if he is kept dry and warm and not exercised. You didn't say how long the symptoms have existed, if more than a day or two help from a vet is needed, I believe.
689914 tn?1227279087 My 7 month old dog had round worms for the third time. Can I treat my other dog and cats with meds even if I'm not sure if they have the worms also. And once the worms are gone how offten and you deworm, if that even a good idea?
687729 tn?1397992727 t, but now with what I went through I will never miss a month of pills or the cost of the yearly blood tests, because it can lead to heartbreak for you and your precious pet.
Avatar f tn Has anyone here had their dog go through heartworm treatment before? My husky is on day 5 from getting his HW treatment (immeticide?) We're not suppose to have him move around too much because the decomposing worms may cause an embolism. He's coughing a a hacking cough today and not eating too much. I'm wondering what to expect next.... I hear the coughing may continue for 2 weeks before he's almost in the clear.
Avatar f tn I was in Petsmart the other day and I saw heartworm medication, with the label, for vetinary use only. Don't know why they're selling it. But you can purchase it and show it to your Vet.
Avatar m tn We recently adopted a dog from our local shelter and he is heartworm positive. We have appointments to get his treatments and are planning to leave town shortly after his 2nd shot. We have another dog who is healthy, but who is really rambunctious, so we need to separate them so he can heal peacefully. So the plan is to leave town (Austin, TX), camp the first night on the TX/OK border, and take 3 days to drive north to Minnesota, staying in 2 hotels along the way, and stay in MN for 2 weeks.
Avatar n tn Thanks for replying. I did bring him back to the vet. He has high levels of protein and casts from his kidney in his urine. The blood work came back normal. He seems to be doing well now...he is currently taking pain and antiinflamatory meds. He has a couple days left of that. We will be taking another urine, this time fasting in two weeks. The vet recommended we wait until he has been off the meds for a couple of weeks.
323001 tn?1227715723 Have you ever tried Sentinel? It's really good for fleas and ticks AND heartworm. Comes in pill form you can bathe your dog without having to wait. Revolution is good too but does not have heartworm protection. If you are concerned about fleas in the dog's or your environment diatomacious (sp?) earth is good to get rid of them and as far as I know it's environmentally friendly and not toxic. Other folks on here might have more suggestions.
178590 tn?1294176767 but my female Redbone got heartworms anyways. Heartgaurd payed for her treatment and she is now over them she had the treatment in Sept and Oct 2007 and she was due to come in heat Oct 2007 and never did. Can the treatment cause infertility?
441506 tn?1267533765 Hi, I have just purchased some heartworm medicine for my dog. I got it for HALF the price thru a friend who has a friend who works for a vet. It is the real stuff, not a generic, and it is fresh. The only problem is it is for dogs that are twice the size of mine. (instead of ordering extra for me, she just sold me some of what she got for her bigger dog) It would be more than ackward to ask for my money back, so my question is this: Can I cut these in half and give them to my dog?
Avatar m tn I have three dogs and for the past week they have all been vomitting either food vile or a foam substance. It started right around when I first fed them a new bag of food. Wondering what it could be.
Avatar f tn He was not tested for feline heartworm disease because has not vomited at all. Here are his lab results with reference ranges: bicarbonate = 12 (13-25mEq/L range), K=5.6 (3.9-5.3mEd/L), Na= 145 (147-155 mEq/L),alb=4.0 (2.3-3.9 g/dL), nutrophil seg= 91 (35-75%), lymphocytes = 4 (20-55%), absolute neutrophil seg = 15552 (2500-12500/uL), absolute lymphocyte =688 (1500-7000/uL). He ate very well last night.
Avatar n tn I recently adopted a dog from a shelter. He is heartworm positive, was treated for hookworms 2 days ago, and is very, very skinny. The vet said his red blood cell count is 'on the cusp.' I just gave Atticus hookworm treatment two days ago. We cannot begin heartworm treatement for three weeks. Other than limiting his activity, how do I best care for him? He is not eating much and I have to really work with him to get him to eat.
Avatar f tn We adopted a beautiful American bull dog from a kill shelter. She had heartworm and is now being treated. We got blood tests done and her blood platelets came back a LOW 47k. They want to do an ultrasound first, any way to tell another way why her count is so low? ? She's not lathorgic or weak or feverish, eats and drinks and wants to play but we are keeping her add calm as possible. Any insight would help. She is a year old American bull dog.
Avatar f tn Ive been on doxycycline for 3 1/2 days, and the discharge has not gone away at all.. may have even worsened. My vagina hurts excruciatingly every time I pee. How long till the pain and discharge goes away?
