Common Questions and Answers about Depression symptoms medication

depression

Avatar m tn He was very good and after a couple of meetings he prescribed me with medication for what he called a chemical imbalance in my brain that caused depression. The meds worked and I definitely wasn't as sad most of the time. So for seven years I've taken meds. More recently I've started to feel, emotionless and even angry (on the inside). Im not suicidal like I was in middle school, but I definitely don't feel good.
Avatar f tn Do you feel it would be helpful if I was on a medication? I have many symptoms for hypo. But I also have major depression and diabetes. Your comment would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar m tn Medication that works for you can be instrumental in treating your symptoms. It can greatly increase the benefits you receive from DBT and other therapies. If you don't like the meds you are on you can ask about different ones, as there is no med specifically for BPD.
Avatar f tn My 40 y/o son suddenly developed these symptoms: obsessed with dying, insomnia, panic attacks, loss of appetite with resultant 15 lb weight loss, so far. He is miserable, crying, telling people he has colon cancer, then lymphoma. His doctor put him on Lexapro but it takes a while to work. He was admitted through ER to the psych unit. The doctor there sent him home the next day, I'm sure because he didn't seem that severe.
1139187 tn?1355710247 I have really bad shakes, nausea, and tinnitus (ear ringing) from medication I take for my thyroid. My Dr. gave me some depression medication and told me it may supress the symptoms. It ended up making them worse. He gave me citalopram. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
1370534 tn?1279514204 I have been on many medications for depression. They work for awhile, but they never seem to get at the heart of the matter. Many of them just stop working after about 8 months. To those of you who are living with BPD, what kind of medications are you on? What have you found to be helpful in your treatment? Thank you so much.
Avatar f tn I cannot stress how important that is, along with medication. Also, be sure that the doctor prescribing your medication is a child/adolescent psychiatrist. There are a lot of special considerations with non-adults and psych medications. Best to you, keep us posted on how you're doing okay?
Avatar n tn I,ve been on depression meds for 30 years. My mother, sister, grandfather are also taking meds for the same reason. I,m on effexor xr and 375mgs per day. It works just fine as long as I don,t miss a day. If i do I am very short tempered and get angly easily along with depression. My problem is I can,t afford Effexor taking it at such a high dose. Is there something else that works like Effexor but costs less? My other meds are Diavan HCL 160/25.. thanks!!
Avatar f tn I'm planning on going back onto medication for depression and anxiety as it's got much worse since being pregnant. I think after your first trimester any defects people claim pills can cause are massively decreased because your baby is developed much more. Just go through all options with your doctor first and any cons of pills you may take. Ask to see a counsellor as well as that may help as well.
Avatar f tn Frank psychotic episodes can occur, especially with parenteral abuse. Careful supervision is required during withdrawal from abusive use, since severe depression may occur. Withdrawal following chronic therapeutic use may unmask symptoms of the underlying disorder that may require follow-up." A 30 pounds weight loss is very significant, especially over a short period of time.
Avatar f tn I went to a neurologist and he was very hopeful of my situation and seems to think that it is treatable with medication and watching it, rather than surgery. He prescribed topamax. Any thoughts? If there is a medication that would be helpful or vitamins or anything I can do. I just want to be the active person I have always been. I am so lost and emotional.
Avatar n tn Depression can have many different symptoms. What affects one person will not affect another. Physical symptoms are very common with depression and anxiety - but we cannot give you a diagnosis here of course. Have you been diagnosed with depression and prescribed medication? Medication itself can give side effects like those you describe. It is difficult to tell you what is causing your sweats and chills without knowing a bit more about you.
Avatar m tn Well, if you're feeling very depressed and feeling very anxious. As for medication, you should first try therapy and lifestyle changes if you're able. Medication comes in if other means have failed and your life is unmanageable. This is basically any form of medicine -- you do the least invasive first and if it doesn't work then you look into the more invasive. Good luck.
1435895 tn?1304294841 If you are having migraines (aside from the chiari headaches) you might try the 'seizure' medication. I take a daily medication (Keppra - 750mg) once a day (at night) to prevent my migraines. And I have to be honest, since I started taking it - my migraines went from 5 - 6 a month to maybe 1 or 2!!! When I DO get them, I take treximet (very expensive - but amazing) - and it usually knocks out a migraine within about 30 minutes!!
Avatar n tn My mom was diagnosed with major depression 2 years ago & responded well to medications primarily Zoloft. A year into treatment all her medications were tapered & discontinued. She then had a relapse after 4 weeks, since then she has been started on different medications each time & her symptoms continue to persist. Currently she is on Zoloft 100 mg BID, Elavil 75 mg BID & Bupropion 150mg QD.
1136436 tn?1261829761 If you have been prescribed medication for depression and have been taking it as prescribed can you say you feel better than before you started taking them? If so then the likelihood is that if you stop taking them the depression will simply return. Unless you have identified and corrected problems and issues in your life that were causing depression that is. Depression doesn't just disappear because we want it to. You have to work hard with treatment to achieve that.
Avatar n tn The symptoms by themself are not a means to diagnose depression. If you are concerned about the sensory symptoms, perhaps a consultation with a neurologist would be useful to exclude any abnormalities. Since this followed a recent change in medication, it is possible this is a medication side effect. You should discuss this with the doctor who prescribed the medication. Good luck.
Avatar n tn Your depression seems inadequately treated if your symptoms have been persistent for over a year. Your medications need to be reviewed by your physician and determine if an increase of dosage or a medication change is necessary. Reserach shows that a combination of psychotherapy and medications is the most effective treatment for depression.Cognitive-Behavioral psychotherapy is particularly useful for the treatment of depression. You might reuqest a referral for this therapy.

Avatar n tn but have been on Inderal in the past and do know that Inderal can cause or further depression. If you mom is still having problems with depression, she/you may want to talk to the doctor about changing her medication ... there are other options available. Either way, it is important to keep taking this medication until such time the doctor would work with her to change it. Here's some information on Inderal from the Internet ... WHAT IS INDERAL? Inderal is a beta-blocker.
Avatar f tn But only a psychiatrist could tell you if you really need medication, becuase it also could be linked to something in your past, and therapy can really help you sort that out and move on. Medication lessons the symptoms while therapy gets to the root of things and helps build you up to be a stronger and happier person. I really encourage you to seek help because you DONT need to feel this way! You are not alone, depression realllly su*cks.
1673455 tn?1305215720 it will just make the SYMPTOMS of depression fade a little. THerapy helps to sort out whats going through your mind and helps build you up to be a happier and stronger person. Medicine and therapy combined is the absolute best treatment for anxiety/depression. Also, think of it like this...if you go to a psychologist or therapist or whatever...their job is to talk to people in difficult situations and they have heard EVERYTHING.
Avatar m tn They are very similar and have same symptoms. Manic depression is hyperactivity. And depression is inattentive or withdrawal from interests. Start prescribing the adhd meds for depression or inattentive attention disorder, and, mood stabilization meds for maniac disorders or hyperactivity and leave psychotherapy for environmental issues and coping skills for change.
Avatar n tn You report depression/fatique as a problem even though your panic attacks are well controlled. I wonder if you have other symptoms of depression or are just experiencing fatigue. How has your appetite, sleep, concentration, ability to enjoy things been recently? If there are also problems in these areas then perhaps a further increase in your Effexor vs changing/augmenting this with a different medication.
