For the last 10 years I have had a problem with my scalp. It started out of the blue, my scalp became very itchy and I could not help scratching it, when I scratched it, what appeared to be white flakes of skin came off. I thought this was just normal dandruff so bought Anti-dandruff shampoo (over the years I have tried every Anti-dandruff shampoo you can think of, even stuff from my GP).

I have noticed in the past few months a red discoloration between my eyes and down the side of my nose, this is not real itchy nor is it dry..but the skin is flakey n patchy..have also noticed the same thing below the tragis on my ears..reminds me of cradlecap? What can I do to get rid of it?

Hi, yes i have a problem concerning my ears and my scalp, my ears the skin on the inside and outside have become very dry and flakey so bad to the point i can pick off peices that are about an inch in size looks like a standard "flake" when i scratch and remove it it turns into a puss like substance. I have had the exact same symptoms for years... no itching, just dry flakey skin under my goatee. I used dandruff shampoo to combat the situation to no avail. I did switch to Tea Tree shampoo and it is more comfortable, but still had flakes. I found that my problem was caused by improper drying after bathing. It's advantage multi, he was thinking maybe it was walking dandruff but I went back to the vets again yesterday and we did a skin scraping and it's not mites or walking dandruff. All you need to do is go to your local pet store and buy a special shampoo for cats for dandruff, itchiness, and dry skin. And, you can buy some salmon oil or omega 3 oil for cats and give her a half teaspoon a day in her food. This should really help a lot. I have done it myself and my cat looks great!

Dandruff is just the shedding of dead skin cells to expose new cells and is not only normal but necessary. If the shedding is excessive, it may indicate a prior buildup of dead cells that were not properly shed. I agree with others that shampooing is not beneficial and dries out the skin. Frequent light brushing is far better for removing dead cells as well as stimulating oil production.

I developed this same problem in high school, then when I joined the Marines it got much worse. The 4 years I was in the Marines it was diagnosed as eczema, jock itch, dermatitis, external yeast infection, etc. Some creams would remedy it for a couple days but it would always return.
