Avatar n tn Eat a healthy diet. You can also take vit B6 and vit A and E which are good for hair and skin. Try medicated shampoos for dandruff. There are a number of over-the-counter shampoos available that can help. The most effective ingredients -- antimicrobials -- to look for are zinc pyridinethione, selenium sulfide, sulfur and ketoconazole (also available by prescription). If your hair is colored, don't use products with selenium sulfide or sulfur.
436973 tn?1217947089 My local hippy pet food store says that enzyme supplements help a lot with skin and coat problems and help pets digest other supplements they are given... Their claim is that pet food has all the enzymes cooked out of it. Makes sense. This is from their website: Supplements Why Supplement? Ideally, an animal’s food would contain all the nutrients needed for a vibrant, healthy life, especially high quality pet food.
1608004 tn?1390770990 All you need to do is go to your local pet store and buy a special shampoo for cats for dandruff, itchiness, and dry skin. And, you can buy some salmon oil or omega 3 oil for cats and give her a half teaspoon a day in her food. This should really help a lot. I have done it myself and my cat looks great!
Avatar n tn Hello. I am 18 years old, and just graduated high school. I have had skin problems for as long as I can remember. They have hindered my confidence since grade school and continue to today. I try to hide my arms and avoid any contact with people because of the small red bumps that cover most of my upper arms; friends have suggested that it may be eczema. On my face, I only have slight acne. I break out occasionally, but it has progressively gotten worse.

277836 tn?1359666174 Dandruff is just the shedding of dead skin cells to expose new cells and is not only normal but necessary. If the shedding is excessive, it may indicate a prior buildup of dead cells that were not properly shed. I agree with others that shampooing is not beneficial and dries out the skin. Frequent light brushing is far better for removing dead cells as well as stimulating oil production.
Avatar n tn I am a licensed cosmetologist and let me tell you; dandruff is caused by a FUNGUS. Dry skin & dandruff are two completely unrelated hair diseases. I have experienced exactly what you are going through right now and you must treat it as dry skin not dandruff. Selsun blue won't do you any good because it contains a medication used for treating the dandruff fungus. Head and shoulders may help because it is targeted for dry, itchy scalp.
Avatar f tn Hello, For the skin and hair issues and the periods problems that you are having, two important possibilities which need to be ruled out are thyroid disease and PCOS (polycystic ovarian disease). Both can cause pimples, acne, dry skin and brittle hair. Hence get your thyroid profile done. For PCOS, you can get tests like 2 hr GTT, serum androgen and testosterone levels, LH-FSH ratio, prolactin levels, TSH levels,17-hydroxyprogesterone levels and 3D ultrasound uterus done.

1351676 tn?1301339436 Dandruff is common in cats of many coat colors, but very noticeable in black cats. My now deceased black longhair had dandruff at times, and I treated that with brushing/combing, which he was thrilled with, and a high-quality diet, which he was less thrilled with. A bit of flax oil on his food seemed to help, as did a "pet shampoo spray" I found in a pet store, which moisturized his fur and skin without the hassle of giving him a bath.
Avatar n tn Hi, It could be dandruff, which sometimes does affect the armpits or dry skin. Dandruff is due to the excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. As it is normal for skin cells to die and flake off, a small amount of flaking is normal and in fact quite common. Malassezia(yeast) lives on the scalps of most healthy adults without causing problems.
446049 tn?1649005835 t have too many problems other than causing skin irritation, pimples, and things like that. Orally, it can be liver toxic, but you're not taking it orally. You might find success with gentler products that are more natural, but then again, you might not. You might experiment if you're interested and if they don't work, you can return to this medication. If the flaking stops, stop using the shampoo and see what happens.

Avatar n tn I am a pharmacist, and feel that I am somewhat educated on most skin problems, but I cannot figure this one out. Could it be internal? Some sort of vitamin deficiency? The rest of my skin (other than face and scalp) is pretty dry, too. I have had my thyroid checked, but never had vitamin levels checked. Any advice? I am so tired of being embarassed.
675347 tn?1365460645 I should have memtioned that what you are seeing might not even BE dandruff, it might be dander. Dander is entirely different from dandruff, and is the result of the dog's saliva drying on their skin and fur after they lick themselves. In many cases of allergies to pets, it isn't the hair that the person is allergic to at all, it's the dander.
Avatar m tn It would be wonderful if gluten was causing both your problems. You can look the diet up on-line and see if you'd like to try it. You have to be 100% gluten free - not even a little bit can be eaten. Even your vitamins have to be gluten free. Give the diet a few months and see if you get any improvement. Gluten is found in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats. Research the diet thoroughly before starting it.
