Avatar_f_tn Hello and hope you are doing well. Your symptoms of bad smell and nasal particles could be due to sinusitis. The best way to get to the bottom of your sinus issues is to see an ENT. A good examination inside the nose with a camera might give the ENT more information as well as a CT scan of the sinuses. If it is a chronic sinus infection, 4-6 weeks of antibiotics are pretty standard in addition to nasal steroid sprays, oral steroids, and salt water irrigations of the sinuses.
Avatar_f_tn That is one of the symptoms of a sinus infection. It's the smell from toxins produced by your white blood cells killing bacteria, going straight to your olfactories. It doesn't require a full blown infection to happen. When you take the Keflex, the smell might get worse before it gets better. Finish your course of Keflex even if the smell goes away, then go back to your doctor and trust him.
Avatar_m_tn It can also be an anaerobic bacterial infection, which sometimes causes smell problems with no other symptoms A neti-pot won't reach into your upper sinuses because of gravity. The following technique uses gravity instead of fighting it. http://www.medhelp.
Avatar_f_tn Its like I have a moldy sock stuffed in my sinus cavity. This smell isn't constant it comes and goes. My doctor refered me to an ENT who took a CT of my sinuses. His response after looking at the scan was "Wow I don't know how you can breath!" Perscribed a nasal spray, which didn't help with the congestion, but would make my nose bleed. He didn't help with my smell problem other than to say that it was all in my head. So apparently I've been imagining it.
Avatar_m_tn It is in fact a good idea to consult an allergy specialist and get a clinical evaluation. You should consult your symptoms if your symptoms still persist. Let us know about how you are doing and if you have any other doubts. Hope this helps. Regards.
Avatar_f_tn Hello, From the symptoms chronic sinus infection needs to be ruled out. Chronic sinusitis begins with an inflammation of the mucous membranes in your sinuses — the air-filled passages around your nose and throat. The inflammation causes fluid buildup eventually plugging the sinus cavity and preventing normal mucus drainage. Chronic sinusitis can be caused by infections of the upper respiratory tract, allergies and deviated nasal septum .
Avatar_f_tn Weeks before and after I had terrible sinus issues (NEVER had a sinus infection before) Dentist discovered a tiny fistula, a hole to my sinus. Told me not to blow my nose for 3 weeks. When I went back, he said it was closed (and in fact, foul tasting drainage had stopped) but x ray showed my sinus was still infected, my sinus was still clogged. I was on assorted antibiotics for 6 months. (I rarely take antibiotics) My sinus (it's only left side, site of tooth) are much improved.
Avatar_m_tn First of all you need to find out whether you really have fungal infection or not. Smell of mushrooms could be due to old pus and secretions in the nasal sinuses or even due to post nasal drip. Chronic sinusitis is often allergic and can be due to mold infection too. A damp wall in the house, carpets, and ACs are all potential sources of mold. Please consult an allergy specialist. You may need to take the allergy test. Chronic sinusitis can also be due to EBV infection.
Avatar_m_tn hi, i think i have a bacterial sinus infection. i got a cold/virus at the beginning of february that lasted 2 days or so (headache, mild fever, mild sore throat), and then all symptoms went away except for a cough. i was coughing up phlegm but otherwise felt well. i went away on a pre-planned ski trip on feb 8th and returned on the 13th, this past thursday.
Avatar_n_tn Your symptoms of bad foul smell in the nose could be due to sinus infections. They are due to stasis and infection of the sinus cavities, and the resultant drainage into the nose causes the bad smell. Facial pain, fever and nasal discharge are the other symptoms of sinusitis. You will need to consult your primary care physician for proper assessment. In the meantime practice good breathing exercises, humidify your room and do steam inhalations. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Avatar_f_tn It is now January 26 2012, and yes, I too have the smell. What the smell is, is the mucous in your sinus. I have a bad infection in the right sinus right now, and that's where the smell is coming from.I'm on Amox/Clav 875 bid ,right now praying the infection goes away soon. I have to say it's the worst sinus infection i've ever had. Really thick disgusting mucous coming out. It's so painful on the outside of my face where the sinus is located. Also, anyone....... be careful using a neti pot.

1485281_tn?1287951992 Has anyone had terrible neck pain while having a bad sinus infection? I have had a sinus infection since August that won't go away! I have been on very strong antibiotics and steroids. My neck pain is very bad and stops me from almost doing anything around the house. The pain is at the base of my head on the right side and radiates down to my neck and shoulder and last night down my arm. I have never had pain in my neck that has lasted so long.
Avatar_n_tn I had just switched allergy medications, from Nasonex to generic Flonase, right at the time my symptoms returned. Could allergies have led to a sinus infection? Can the sinus infection cause dizziness and fatigue? Due to the holiday weekend I haven't been able to call my doctor, but after 3 prior visits he's never suggested sinuses to be a cause.
Avatar_m_tn All the tests came back normal. The doctor said that it could be a sinus infection, and all he could do is prescribe an anti-biotic. Can anyone shine any light on my problem ?.
Avatar_f_tn Irrigation is good but is limited in providing relief from infection because the water cannot reach the deeper sinus areas that the solution needs to reach to make conditions better. Reduce inflammation which promotes drainage and find a way to keep the sinuses moistened and flowing and the smell will go away..you also must take antibiotics to kill the bacteria. Anyone ever got rid of this dreadful problem?
Avatar_f_tn I have a constant smell of infection in my nose and have had it for 10 to 14 days now. 3 weeks ago I was saw my pcp and had a physical and blood work. Blood work come back and my doc said I was healthy. Now I'm not so sure because of the smell in my nose and no matter what I do I can't get rid of it. I don't have a runny nose nor is it clogged or dry.
Avatar_m_tn I have been experiencing for about 3 years now a metallic smell in my nose. It comes and goes. I have been to Ear,Nose and Throat doctor and he cannot find anything. I have been to an allergist and he comes up with nothing. My primary physician tells me to use the netti-pot to flush out my sinus'- no good either. There are times when I get thi ssmell and then a day might pass and I get a severe migraine. I also get nausea from this smell .
Avatar_n_tn Sometimes I get funny smells when I have a sinus infection, or I have a type of hallucination that involves only strange smells. There's a word for it but I forget right now.
Avatar_f_tn Thank you for taking the time to help me. I have read the journal top to bottom. I have no other symptoms - no sinus pain, mucus, irritation but will certianly give this method a try. Once I'm off smoking for 2 months, that should be enough to keep me off smoking for ever - that will be one positive outcome. I'll let you know how I made out.
Avatar_m_tn Causes include brain injury or seizures in the temporal lobe, various neurological disorders, overactive olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs), or the loss of inhibitory neurons brought on by a sinus infection or some other type of head cold. I had a bout of phantosmia, in my case it was an electrical burning type smell, that lasted for a few days.
Avatar_f_tn All of those problems could be symptoms of a sinus infection in your upper sinuses. Only a doctor can make a diagnosis. If it is diagnosed as a bacterial infection, and you are prescribed antibiotics, and they do not work, as is sometimes the case, then here is an alternate treatment that is extremely effective against viral, bacterial, and some fungal infections. http://www.medhelp.
Avatar_n_tn I could smell a horrible musty odor and made it hard for me to breathe like heavy air. Ever since I have constant bad smells. And even smokey odors in my house. No one else smells it and usually it is in my own home. At times it's like chemicals too. My husband thinks I am nuts. What is causing me to be so sensitive to lots of odors????? Even feel like I am tasting chemicals and breathing smoke very heavily. Very upsetting. Dr checked out my sinus..nothing.
Avatar_m_tn 5 months ago I had a chronic cough doc said it was not on my chest but in my tubes like kitar .and gave me steroids took months to go.anyway I told him I had an unusual smell of cigarette smoke all the time so acrid it make me cough .he Sid it was part of the infection.but that was 5months ago and the smell has got worse but the cough has gone. Avatar_f_tn You may have a chronic infection and the drainage holes in your sinus are blocked so fluid can't drain out. You may also have nasal polyps in your nose. It my also be due to chronic food or chemical allergies. To start off with you probably need to go and see a good ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist. He will be able to do some investigations to work out the cause of your symptoms.
Avatar_m_tn It could smell like dog-poop, old cheese, ammonia, a burning smell, etc. The smell comes on, often, as a result of a cold or sinus infection. Some, not all, of these smells are caused by an anaerobic bacteria thriving in the upper sinuses, and I was able to remove mine with a Flip-Turn Sinus Flush, and many other people have had success with it as well: http://www.medhelp.
429574_tn?1203805901 However when I wash my hands (for instance) in nice smelling soap and stick them to my nose i can smell the soap over the bad smell. Am I crazy, is my sense of smell messed up, or is it possible that I could be smelling something bad in my nose?
