Coughing like clearing throat

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing like clearing throat

coughing

For 2 years I have had a significant problem with sinus drainage, coughing and consistent clearing of my throat. By half way through the day my throat hurts so bad that it is hard to talk. What can I do. I've seen and ENT dr twice and an allergy specialist. The latest option the ENT dr. gave me was to try some medication Omeprazole for acid reflux even though I have no issues with that. What can I do?
This past weekend the symptoms improved drastically but for the past couple of days I still have slight congestion with clear mucus and I'm constantly clearing my throat? I have no other symptom and don't even feel sick anymore. Is this kind of like my body getting over the cold or what?
For years I have had constant problems with clearing my throat and coughing constantly. At night it get worse. It feels like I can never get enough air and someome is sitting on my chest. I'm tired of living this way any help would be appreciated.
Im coughing all day long, im wheezing allot, and allot of mucous from nose, lungs and throat, Constant throat clearing... Why do they dont find anything ?
I am constantly clearing my throat. My voice becomes very raspy. It is necessary for me to drink water constantly. Sometimes just swallowing will start a coughing fit. I went through extensive testing about 4 years ago. They biopsied my thyroid (no cancer), ran multiple blood tests, and a barium tests on my throat (found no obstructions). This is when they did come to a conclusion my enlarged thyroid was due to hashimotos.
I can't sleep at night because trouble clearing throat , coughing really bad , belching , stomach noises , gas , and get nervous . What should I do ? Go see a special doctor ? Please help me!
For the last two months I have had the feeling of constant dripping in my throat. My sputum white, sometimes lime green and is as thick as glue. Sometimes the mucus that I cough up has, what looks like, black thread-like hair. It is not hair, but it has that appearance. I am constantly clearing my throat or trying to cough up the "lump" in my throat. My ENT dx. me with Bronchitis and placed me on Prednisone and Factive(antibiotic).
Then also, of course, as soon as I was done with the test, went to eat and started coughing and throat clearing again. A couple of weeks after the pH test, while I was taking prescription omeprazole (20 mg I think), twice daily, my symptoms improved a lot. Hardly any coughing or throat clearing. My doctor told me that I could continue on the omeprazole once daily, which I did. I have been fine, up until about May 2011.
infact, i found that it was extremely worse when i smoked. as soon as i quit smoking, i quit coughing and clearing my throat all the time. sometimes ( mostly during the pollen seasons and other times when i am around allergens) i still do have to clear my throat a lot, and also find myself swallowing a lot because i feel like something is back there. it can get really annoying.
my 7 year old daughter has chronic throat clearing. she would do this about 1000 times a day. its just all the time until she falls asleep. this follows a type of virus where she had a cough for 5-6 weeks. coughing so bad that she would sometimes vomit. 3 times we saw a doctor and every time there was a different verdict. from asthma to a virus to possible whooping cough. she was put on 2 different types of antibiotics of which neither did any good.
For several years I have had what I thought was chest/throat congestion, to the extent that I was constantly clearing my throat and coughing. I just saw one of the best ENTs on the west coast and just from my description of my symptops, he accurately predicted other symptoms and details, as well as what he would see when he looked down my throat. Turns out, what I have is LPR (laryngopharyngeal) reflux.
to the point that he and i are often not sleeping due to him persistently clearing his throat and coughing and this is effecting our relationship. We saw our GP about 8 weeks ago, he initially prescribed antibiotics and a week of prednisalone plus saline nasal washes. This did not help. We then revisited our GP who thought it may be reflux associated, he was commenced on pantoprazole 40mg daily.
Its very interesting when subjects like this is coming up. Yes I´ve been clearing my throat for decades to. got even so used to it and it felt so natural that i didn´t noticed it my self, but other people made me aware of my annoying habit, specially my ex,shed use to say she could here me long way before I´ved reached the front door. I have always thought it was a nervous thing, interesting this could be HCV related.
I feel like the mucus is coming from my sinuses, because i have to suck from my nose and spit from my mouth, i also have a dry non-productive cough, well more like a cough then clearing my throat for about 11 months, also some wheezing when i take a deep breath in, and also when i breath in real deep, theres pain in my upper back ( i think that might be a pinched nerve,it happened about 8 weeks ago, and has not been a symptom for long). in feb 05 went to dr.
I am desperate. Three weeks ago I was to go off all allergy meds to prepare for a skin allergy test. After the first day, my throat almost swelled shut, I could not breathe (had to use my nebulizer - I have asthma), had red blotchy skin and hives, was red head to toe, itched intensely all over and then the most bizarre thing happened. I began sniffing. I felt the urge to sniff, as though mucous were in my nose, but when I blew, nothing came out.
I'm just constantly clearing my throat and by the end of the day, my throat is sore from doing it. I can't cough this stuff up. I wake up coughing in the night. If I had to guess, I'd say it's allergic in nature, but I can take every antihystamine in the cupboard, and nothing impacts it. I'm starting to think that it will be this way until I'm dead. I am completely at a loss for options.
He checked her out and decided it wasn't an allergy or a breathing problem. Sometimes it sounds like she's clearing her throat loudly, other times it sounds like a loud hiccup - which is what lead me to believe she might be having a breathing problem. I do believe she does this involuntarily because she is not interrupted when she is talking and when she sleeps at night, she is silent the entire night - I know this because I slept in the same room with her for two weeks.
For many many years I have had trouble with constant clearing my throat--to the point of loosing my voice completely if I don't keep clearing it. It is most previlent after eating and in the morning (but not right away). I have had a barium swallow test done, tried 4-5 different steroid sprays, allergy testing (negative), large doses of guaifenesin. Nothing has helped! After eating, I have to cough hard from my chest to bring up flem.
he dx'd me with bronchitis, gave me augmentin, steroids ( prednisone ), got somewhat better, but still coughing and clearing throat and drainage, went back to dr. in may 05, same symptons, gave me clyndimycin, nasal steroid, and saline nasal spray, i took all and still no progress. in october 05 saw an ENT specialist, he looked at my nasal and sinuses and throat with a camera, said everything looks good, but sent me for a B A swallow to see if i might have GERD, that came back negative.
I didn't cough either when I quit even though I was coughing like crazy when I smoked. Like you, I kept expecting to cough up a bunch of gunk, but it never happened. I even asked my doc about it and she said this was normal.
Jackie, in all the time you've been on this forum or others, have you ever heard of anyone with the whole throat clearing issue like me who got overit and recovered? Thank you.
I have been in a constant cycle of throat clearing and coughing for seven years now and it's getting worse. I do have GERD which is supposed to be helped by the little purple pill. However, I'm taking the maximum dose twice daily and it's not working. I just had gall bladder surgery and thank goodness my surgeon is taking my throat clearing seriously. Up to this time, I've felt like a ping pong ball being batted between my ENT and gastroentologist.
Hi, your tickle in the throat sounds just like mine and yes sometimes after taking in a breath, I would go into a coughing fit and some time end up with a sneeze or two. Does spicy food, smoke or alcohol also set you off??
I'd like to followup my post for informational puposes. It has been a year and 4 months since my post above. What we discovered with my daughters throat clearing is that the last doctor we saw was correct: That my daughter originally was coughing at drainage due to a cold, but then the coughing irratated her throat and she picked up the "habit" (tic) of clearing her throat because of the sensation of the tickle from the irratated throat. At that point it was a catch-22.
Now if you reverse this, that is, tighten the throat and breath in continuously for abour 8 to 12 seconds, then hold your breath for 4 seconds with the chin down, then chin up, close right nostril and slowly breath out through left nostril, you have just done Ujjayi pranayam. You will feel like coughing initially. Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.
