Coughing like a smoker

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing like a smoker

Avatar f tn I experience several bouts of heavy coughing that can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes while coughing up mostly clear phlegm with some of it a sea green color and at other times tinged pink - though this is rare. One out of ten coughing fits ends with me vomiting .... I guess it would be best described as a clear foamy form of phlegm. I do experience hot and cold flashes, sometimes it helps my breathing to step outside and sometimes it makes it worse.
250701 tn?1320974765 You know the drill about is deadly. Having said that as a former smoker who still longs to smoke, I think you are wise to tackle one thing at a time. Clear the virus, rebuild your health. Later there are things you can try to help you quit. All the best to you.
Avatar f tn At the beginning of the month I got the upper respiratory virus that was going around so did the kids. all three of the kids stopped the coughing withing a week (so did the co-workers) I have asthma but I cannot get rid of the productive cough.
Avatar m tn Hello whitefox1, Just finished reading your post. I don't know what you are experiencing but I'm glad to hear that you will be going to the doctor. You mention a cough that you can't stop and leaves you short of breath. Have you ever been tested to see if you have asthma ? Just a thought. Before I was diagnosed with asthma, I experienced coughing bouts that seemed like they wouldn't stop.
Avatar m tn Sounds like Strep Throat - for which you will need antibiotics. It won't go away on it's own.
Avatar n tn I am a non-smoker, I have been coughing for the las month or so, this morning in the shower I started to spit black phlegm. Now I know this is not "normal". My father died from lung cancer at age 61, he was a smoker. I am using "Flovent" in the morning and "Ventolin" as needed. Any idea if that would stop by itself or should I see a doctor for stronger stuff? Thanks.
Avatar n tn With all of these, the x-ray would be normal and, with all 3 including asthma, the breathing test could be normal, too. I trust you are not a smoker of cigarettes or marijuana as that is also a common cause of cough. Note: cough can sometimes be the main symptom of asthma, with no wheezing. If your doctor determines that none of these 3 are causing your cough and is at a loss as to what to do, suggest that he visit the following website:
Avatar n tn About two months ago I suddenly developed a cough. Started in cold weather (travelling outside of Florida in cold climate). No other symptoms. Seemed to be only chest tightness, and an almost constant dry cough- rarely productive. I was already taking antihistamine daily for allergies. Went to the doctor after about 30 days. He gave Asmanex, a Medrol 6 day dose pack, Nexium, and upped to an ant-histamine with decongestant (Claritin-D generic equivalent.
Avatar n tn Why do I keep coughing up mucus only in the morning? I don't have a stuffy nose either, just this problem in the morning. What is wrong with me?
Avatar f tn ive been on hep C treatment, 1 big pill a day, for 28 days so far. I am coughing up a lot of mucus, it looks like intense healthy mucus, mostly in 2 different shapes. a flat rectangle and the crescent moon. I put a few drops of iodine w/ a little water and the crescent shape separated into 3 small oblong shapes. the rectangle one, when put up to the light, had multiple shapes in it. one shape was similar to a 'h', and the others small crescent shapes.
Avatar n tn I have a chronic cough from being ashtmatic and a smoker. Obviously I need to quit smoking. I'm a 33yr old male about 50lb overweight (6'4, 250). However, my recent concern is that I get 1-2 week long cough attacks like twice a year, and during these attacks, I am getting increased episodes of vertigo and shakes.

Avatar f tn It would take me hours to finally get the cough to subside long enough to go to sleep, but then I would end up waking up three or four times a night coughing. It would keep waking my husband up too. It is a very deep dry cough and has caused me to gag several times. I finally went to see my PCP and he prescribed Azithromycin and Bromfed. I took them until they were finished and neither one of them helped. I am now on Prednisone, an inhaler and Levofloxacin.
Avatar f tn A post nasal drip is often a cause of chronic cough. Asthma like condition too can precipitate a chronic cough and so also a gastric reflux or GERD. A very small percentage of non smokers have chronic cough as a sign of lung cancer. All the above mentioned conditions have to be ruled out one by one. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Do consult your doctor and discuss these possibilities. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted.
Avatar n tn Sounds like you may need to check in with your physician, especially given the wheeze which has developed. Without knowing more about your husband's health (chronic health conditions, smoker, etc), it is hard to say why he is still coughing, though the Riba does list cough as a side effect. Keep in mind that Ribavirin has a long half-live, and it takes up to 6 months to completely eliminate all the drug from the body. Even so, a worsening cough sounds like a reason to call the doc.
Avatar n tn my sister is a smoker for like 3 - 4 years maybe like 2 a day lately shes been coughing everyday 2-3 time a day and just this past 3 days shes been spiting blood in the morning what can this be we are very worried is smoking the cause of this
Avatar f tn My mother has two coughing fits today. She is 49, and a smoker. The first one had no stimulation, she just started coughing heavily, and she told me once she could talk again that she had experienced a feeling almost like an electric shock going outward from her body across her upper chest (where one would administer cpr on someone overweight or pregnant) and in the same place across her back.
20293666 tn?1494392823 It started out with a few coughing episodes throughout the day and within the first week I felt like I was coughing every 3 minutes. The coughing got worse at night and right when I woke up. I have been to see the doctor 4 times. I have been told it was a cold, I have been told it was GERD / acid reflux and I have been told it was bronchitis. I have been on antibiotics and Prednisone twice. I was also given an albuterol inhaler and none of these things helped.
Avatar n tn All pet scans are clear and x-rays clear still I have a cough that sometimes is that of a heavy smoker. Coughing brings up clear mucus. Other than this cough I feel great. Any suggestions on how to take care of the cough?
Avatar f tn I am a non smoker 29 yrd female. I recently got sick it's been 5 days now. I've been coughing up unbelievable amounts of phlem and blowing my nose and more coming out. After I cough or blow my nose I can literally feel the mucus going from my nose to my throat. When I put my hand to my chest I can feel it so I cough it up and it's gone. It's never ending. The mucus balls are jelly like green yellowish and almost the size of a dime. It scared me.

Avatar f tn I have rhinitis (allergy). Had it all my life. I'd recently been taking antihistamine (cetirizine) everyday (10mg) for 3 months because I moved to a place next to trees that released a lot of pollen. Changed cities recently so stopped taking it. This problem started shortly afterwards. Any ideas?
Avatar f tn I'm a 46 yr old male, smoker with diagnosed copd. After sex I go through a severe episode of coughing EVERY TIME. This worries my wife to the point that it has affected our sex life. Can you give me the most probable reason this happens? Is it because of the copd and the increased intake of oxygen during sex and will this keep getting worse?
