Hi to everyone,
I've been wondering what the problem is with me. As a child I was slow although I learnt fast, learnt to read when I was 5 y.o., but I responded slowly when talked to and generally was phlegmatic, usually lost in thought. Didn't have serious problems with school although I was rather lazy and ill-organized. As a teenager I could spend hours just sitting and dreaming. I would start doing something, e.g.
I have a 13 year old boy, who is very intelligent, and was recently diagnosed with ADD. I have been going around and around trying to figure out what is best for him. Do I prescribe him prescription drugs and take the risk of him becoming hooked on them, or do I try and medicate him naturally with homeopathic medicine? I see the advantages in both, but not sure what is actually best. His grades and behavior have definitely fallen drastically!
I have a 7 yr old son who has been officialy diagnosed as having ADHD along with Sensory Processing Disorder since the August; before he had had early intervention for speech delay and had been labled with "Developmental Delay" by the school systems special services team.
I agree that young boys often are behind girls in their ability to sit and attend in a classroom because they mature later.
t know how old you are, but my son was the same way when it came to school, reading a book, anything that required focused attention for long periods of time. This is very normal for many boys. Just because you cannot focus on a book or movie, or your schoolwork, does not in any way mean that you have ADHD, it just means that maybe those things do not get your attention like maybe doing something hands on. My son and alot of boys are hands on learners.

age 13 is such a tough one for boys, particularly when they have a disability. I would be very surprised if he truly does not care that he can not be successful in school and make you proud of him--take that pre-teen bravado with a BIG grain of salt. Kids with ADHD and learning disabilities often choose to fail on purpose because they worry that they are too dumb to learn. To a teenage boy, being seen as a rebel can be a lot more attractive than being seen as dumb.
Is there any way to add MS symptoms that aren't on your list? For example, one of my worst ones is itching, so I'd like to add it.

I have suffered from ADD symptoms as a result of my drug and alcohol use a decade ago. I have been on many ADD and anti depressant meds but all to no avail except with Wellbutrin XR and somewhat with Concerta. The Wellbutrin worked amazingly well a long time ago but stopped shortly after I took a small sip of hard liquor. My doctors are perplexed by this but that is the only explanation I can come up with.

lol, well with the fact that we just out right and bought it we would rather stay here as we dont have a motgage payment or land payment. We purchased it forclosed for 7,000. It is a 2006 model only 2 years old, so DH isnt thrilled at the aspect of trying to buy something else lol. He said if anything we can extend the boys' room to make it bigger for now, or get a loan to add to it. I always have the basement but I don't feel like having any of my children that far away from me.
They can assess a person/child against a list of symptoms that are collectively named ADD/ADHD - for lack of much better understanding. When they test for the flu, they can list the symptoms and check them off (temp, ache, cough, etc), but they can also TEST for a virus and yes/no its there. But in medicine those symptoms alone can mean many things. Same for attention and hyperactivity.

It has been frustrating over the years and a struggle in every aspect of my life, even telling my family and friends I was seeing a shrink for ADD...well they were far from supportive, laughing as if i was crazy! I do work in the accounting field after all I couldn't possibly have ADD!
am glad to hear that more adults are being diagnosed without symptoms as a child. i won't tell me shrink though, he seems to think he knows everything!

It takes at least 3 weeks of consistant, immediate reinforcement to change behavior (and thats only for one behavior).
You say no discipline works. Unfortunately, the discipline that you are talking about is yours and the parents - and you are right, its not working. You are only 21and I have tend to doubt that you have really had the experience to deal with kids like this.
