Zyprexa how it works

Common Questions and Answers about Zyprexa how it works

zyprexa

Avatar m tn Zyprexa (olanzapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication. Exactly how it works is not known. It is thought to work by changing the actions of certain chemicals in the brain. Zyprexa is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 13 years old. Zyprexa is sometimes used together with other antipsychotic medications or antidepressants.
Avatar f tn If you have never been diagnosed with a TBI and as to how that affected you see a neurologist. Zyprexa is an antipsychotic with mood stabilization properties but if you couldn't tolerate there are many other choices.
1257808 tn?1322762215 I do however have a friend who it works wonders for her. I hope this new combo works for you. Remember to give it time.
874521 tn?1424116797 The diabetes is pretty common, serious weight gain is a given - death is really rare. Part of the reason it stays on the market is because it works for psychosis so dang well. It is the only drug I have ever been on that can quiet my brain. It is such a nice feeling. I really miss that feeling. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately considering the side effects) it spikes my cholesterol and I can't take it anymore. I take Zelox which helps some. It works about 50% of what Ziprexa did.
1082697 tn?1260064616 I have never heard of Zyprexa being activating though of course there are adverse reactions. However, it might be from an interaction with the Celexa which can be activating in a person with bipolar so you could ask your psychiatrist about that.
739988 tn?1386672969 I like the Zyprexa because it works really well for me. I guess I am just wondering if there is anyone else out there like me?
Avatar f tn I am taking anti depressants Zyprexa 5mg, Cipralex 20mg & Wellbutrin SR 150mg. When I am busy I am fine as soon as I think of anxiety my anxiety level starts to increase and becomes realy disturbing and uncomfortable. What can I do to control my fear of anxiety?
Avatar m tn For all the people taking zyprexa, my son is living proof you can get very bad side effects coming off zyprexa. It happens every time the doctors have tried. If there is anyone out there who can tell me how to wean his off very slowly and safely. He is on 2.5 mg on day, not much now but he was on 15 mg day and its been very difficult and dangerous to get him down to this amount.
1589929 tn?1310066922 m pregnant so I stopped taking it but I was on Zyprexa before I got pregnant and it helped me sleep and I really need something. If anyone has anything to say about Zyprexa and pregnancy I would love to hear it (I'm not taking Zyprexa at the moment.) Thank you for your time.
Avatar n tn My doc told me to take zantac half hour befroe eating and this will supressthe appetite. and whadda ya know it WORKS!!lol I have been on zyprexa for 7 years and it has been my miracle but I did gain weight and on top that I was hypothryoid. Now I am on synthroid9 thryoidectomy sept 06 and my metabolism is working again I have lost from 225 to 198. so it is possible tyo loose weight while on zyprexa. we just have to work a liitle harder at it.
Avatar m tn My psychiatrist asked that i stop the zyprexa immediately as it was causing an increase in prolactin levels, he asked that i stop the drug COLD TURKEY! (no weaning off) - When I stopped the medication, i did not sleep for 4 days. Whats worse is, I just didn't feel tired anymore...obviously I feel physically tired, but I dont get that sleepy tired feeling.
Avatar f tn I just take Zyprexa alone and it works for me. I am lucky I only need 2.5 mg it has a pretty strong effect on me. Because of the weight gain I want to know if anyone has found an alternative that works as well as zyprexa?
874521 tn?1424116797 The problem when a pdoc tries somethimg on some patients they keep going with it on others this how it goes. because he can't open the brain of the patient to see which drug is convenient, so the direct approach is to keep trying and truying and the poor guy gets fired from his job or lose his bachelor degree like i did. Until i took over myself, i tried lamictal (2mg only as i have something called idysicratic only bear small doses). one advised lithium. i refused.
1082697 tn?1260064616 i am getting wired on the zyprexa the doctor put me on. i am taking it to help with my depression along with celexa . i have been on the celexa for years. the zyperxa is making me hyper. but a good hyper. i have been taking it for over a week now. now this drug is suppose to make you sleepy. well, it is working the opposite for me. the doctor told no one she has ever had on zyprexa had this reaction to it. if anyone can help me with this, i would appreciate it. i am not feeling so depressed .
Avatar f tn After reading the comments from this forum, it seems that some are experiencing insomnia for even a low dosage so I am wondering how long the insomnia will last given the duration I have been on Zyprexa.
Avatar n tn They firsy put me on lamictal and I wound up in the hospital with serious rashes. Now, I am on zyprexa qhich makes me want to eat everything in sight. It seems to have me syabilized but now I have read about the countess thousands of people who have gotten diabetes from taking zyprexa. I have high blood sugar anyway, so I assume I am at high risk. What should I do? Switch meds? If so, yo what? Or, stay with zyprexa? Any advice would be appreciated.
Avatar m tn • Other antidepressants- Wellbutrin (made me angry), Anafranil (Helped control obsessive thinking), Cymbalta (no effect), Strattera (no effect) • Antipsychotics- Zyprexa (works slightly, weight gain), Seroquel (doped me up, no help otherwise), Risperdal (no effect), Abilify (made me jittery, helped depression), Latuda (combined with zyprexa, no effect), Lithium (no effect except a rash), Geodon (slight effect, less than Zyprexa) • Benzos- Valium, Librium (anger), Xanax, Klonopin (doped me up),
1082697 tn?1260064616 now i hear bad things about zyprexa. i can get past the weight gain, but not the sleepiness it can cause. i am afraid to take it. i know it is an antisycotic drug or how ever it is spelled. i am just thinking about throwing out all of my pills and living with this anxiety and depression. i guess the new thing now is take this drug if an antidepressant does not work. i can hear it makes you a zombie. is all this true? has anyone had good luck with this drug?
Avatar f tn When you've been on a med that changes how your body works naturally for 15 years, you have to expect a difficult time. And going off cold turkey just makes it all the harder for the body to adjust. If you're having emotional problems that are different from the ones you originally went on the med for, my advice is to go back on it and taper more slowly if you still want to quit.
Avatar f tn I love Zyprexa! It took a while to adjust to, but it allowed me to go off Lithium which is much more toxic. I've been taking it happily for 4 years. I take 5 mg at night, so I don't need to worry about sleepiness. I didn't have any weight gain either!
874521 tn?1424116797 His pdoc returns July 13th and has said he would than put him on seroquel as you mentioned, I look forward to this and hope it works for him....he was on it before the crash but not a high enough dose(only 100mg) I don't think the pdoc understood at that time the full extent of the ONSET of his problems. I don't know if he will also change his MS at that time as well?....I only search for answers to ease my own mind since I am the third party I cannot suggest.
401554 tn?1270213756 I was diagnosed with a harmless heart arrhythmia a year ago and the Zyprexa is making it much worse. My cardiologist and psychiatrist said it was nothing to worry about but I'm scared. Risperdal also had the same effect, too. I tried Abilify but It made me way too jittery. Has anyone else out there experienced this?
Avatar n tn Zyprexa can cause drowsiness when you first start taking it as can Lithium. It takes time for the body to adjust but if after a couple of weeks she is still very sleepy it would be worth discussing the Zyprexa again. Lithium is different for everyone but can cause drowsiness when you first start it, although that doesn't mean it definitely will. I found I was drowsy for the first couple of weeks.
Avatar n tn t happen in him it should not be a problem. If it is there are other antipsychotics but Zyprexa has the best mood stabilization ability. If you want full information go to the medication websites. The psychiatrist he sees outpatient after he is released can adjust the dosages of his medications and potentially reduce them if he remains stable. Speak to them about that then.
Avatar n tn Lamictal is a mood stabilizer with anti-depressant qualities - some even say it works better then other classes of anti-depressants - Zyprexa and Lamictal are both common treatments for bipolar. If the BP is hard to treat, there may be other meds added on, but she's on a good combination. Ask your pharmacist as well.
520191 tn?1355635402 Simple question can you take two anti-pyschotic medications at once? And if you can is it better than an a anti-depressant for a mixed mood? - this is because i am on seroquel for anxiety and sleep and i don't want to come off it but i have the choice of going on venlfaxine or zyprexa so if i chose zyprexa would i have to come off the seroquel. I am being treated for bipolar at the moment mixed state.
Avatar f tn I understand what you are saying. The unfortunate thing is that you had to go off of Zyprexa without the ability to taper it down slowly. Now you are left with your anxiety and withdrawl symptoms and apparently no coping strategies. Since you no longer have insurance, I would look into a free group meeting to discuss your symptoms. Do a Google search in your area for whatever you were taking the Zyprexa for.
