Zyprexa and dementia

Common Questions and Answers about Zyprexa and dementia

Avatar n tn My 81 year old mother has had a sudden severity in dementia and depression, including a time of visual hallucinations with paranoia and anxiety since her husband died end of June, 2007. She was hospitalized in a geropych unit for 16 days. She is now on Zyprexa 5 mg BID, it has been about 1 month of treatment. She is much better, no hallucinations/paranoia/anxiety. She also takes Lexapro, Aricept and Trazadone (for sleep) - these all are relatively new in the last 3 to 4 weeks.
Avatar f tn ****************** Hazy, as you can see by the above (brief) description on the site, your Doctor is really the only one that can let you know what you can or cannot mix with Zyprexa, and also, if any weird side-effects occur, you should call your Doctor immediately, so that you can discuss this. I would think that discussing w/ your Doctor whether you can take Zyprexa with Ativan, is a must, since he/she would know best.
Avatar f tn During my visit today I saw that a new medication was administered. It is Zyprexa. I came home and read about it on the internet and am very concerned that she is getting this med. What I read is that it isn't to be given to the elderly who have dementia, anyone with difficulty swallowing, which she has and parkinson's. Should I be concerned?
Avatar n tn About 5 years ago he began to exhibit behavior changes which have gotten worse since then. He is delusional, on disability and is taking Zyprexa, Amantadine, Namenda, Cymbalta and excelon patch. Still, he seems to worsen. He now has symptoms of Parkinsons with balance issues. He is 55 years old - much to young to be this dibilitated. He was tremendously active, a college graduate who owned his own business.
874521 tn?1424120397 The reason that sometimes typical antipsychotics (such as Haldol) are still used (although they have twice the rate of causing tardive and don't help on cognitive and negative symptoms and really don't have much of a mood stabilization effect) is because they are far less likely to cause diabetes.
Avatar f tn Health care providers are so eager to give out that and other drugs in its class (i.e Zyprexa, Risperdal) for every sneeze and sniffle (metaphorically speaking of course). I am convinced that most doctors who perscribe these meds have no idea what they are doing. A few years back i was suffering from severe anxiety and a doctor put me on Luvox and Seroquel, two drugs which i found through researching after being on them, should not be taken at the same time.
Avatar m tn Haldol is a major medication and some ppl just do not tolerate it let alone the addition of .Zyprexa. Zyprexa (Olanzapine) which is a medication that is used to treat schizophrenia and acute manic episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. It is also in a drug class known as atypical anti-psychotics. It can take weeks for their systems to return to normal if it is from the medications. Sometimes it is just a matter of days.
Avatar f tn My mother has gone from Parkinsons to Parkinsonism after receiving Zyprexa and now dementia at 87 years of age. She receives 15 mg of zyprexa at noon with sinemet and Tylenol 3. Doesn't the codeine intensify the sinemet and cause stronger hallucinations?Does Zyprexa ever cause hallucinations? Did the Zyprexa cause Parkinsonism? Does the codeine cause permanent damage to the brain and cause dementia? She has type 2 diabetes as well as cardio issues.
Avatar f tn The finding is the latest in a succession of recent reports contradicting the long-held assumption that the new drugs, which include Risperdal, Zyprexa and Seroquel, are safer than the older and much less expensive medications that they replaced. The risk of death from the drugs is not high, on average about 3 percent in a person being treated at least 10 years, according to the study, published Thursday in The New England Journal of Medicine.
4415577 tn?1354233736 Hi there, Im BP1 and have been on meds since last jan, after my 1st hospitalization, only recently I decided to quit my Zyprexa and what not, you see I missed my creativity, that human quality that meds ripps us off if you will, anyway, things were fine for a week, I didn't even experience physical withdrawal symptoms except for may be two days of being sick and insomniac, things were fine for a small while afterwhich it felt as tho a train hit me in the head!
341205 tn?1195768670 Hi, How are you? Zyprexa normally does not cause hallucinations although it can cause disorientation and insomnia. Withdrawal from Zyprexa however can cause hallucinations. I would suggest you to discuss this with your treating doctor. Take care!
Avatar n tn Since then we have found that Risperdal caused severe side effects before reaching a therapeutic (working) dose, and Zyprexa, the second med used in an attempt to deal with delusions and hallucinations, is not working yet (we are at 6.25 mg/day at this time). Because of the sensitivity to the anti psychotics (although we need to give the Zyprexa more time), the psychs are wondering whether my wife does not have some other sort of dementia, and the name Lewy Bodies was mentioned.
Avatar m tn That has had some forgetfulness and mild hallucinations to a women that can no longer dress her self or complete a sentence, We took her to neurologist and he did some testing in office that day.... Said she had some Dementia going on and started her on lowest dose Exelon patch with in 6 days she was paranoid and begging to go home ( she was home ) to go thru cabinets and gathering things to episodes of agitation ...
Avatar n tn My brother takes 4 different types of meds for his anxiety and has for years, it works really well for him, Clonapin, Zoloft, Zyprexa, Metazapine. Everyone is different though, what works for one might not for another. Have you had thorough med exams? If so and you are sure it is just anxiety, read the book, Hope and Help for Your Nerves by Claire Weeks, plus you can download her cd's. They were very helpful for me!!
Avatar m tn To be honest, it may not be anything to do with protesting that she is in this new care home, but a condition of the dementia. My father has Alzheimer's and when he was first diagnosed with dementia we were able to coax him into having a bath. As the condition deteriorated and he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's it got much worse to try and entice him to have a bath. As far as he was concerned he had one "last week".
Avatar f tn Plus it damages your thryoid. I take ciltalpram(celexa) and zyprexa and this combo has been great for my sex life.I am nice and stable and sex is better than ever. talk to your docs and get something else.
Avatar n tn It started by seeing people outside in the driveway, the woods, back yard. This went on for a few months. The doctor gave him zyprexa (spelling?) and three days into that drug the hallucinations got worst. He started seeing people inside the house. He started seeing objects in the house move. Such as figurines and things. He has been extremely paranoid since the surgery. He thinks that the people he sees are trying to steel his boat and trailer that are in the driveway.
Avatar n tn The medications are like Zyprexa, Clozaril, and most recently Risperdal. But i have really been thinking about withdrawling from it. Because i am really worried about the side effects of antipsychotics, and i have to just keep taking them. I know that withdrawling from antipsychotics can cause withdrawal symptoms. And how long would the withdrawal symptom insomnia usually last?
Avatar n tn It is time for you to seek out counseling witha therapist as well as medication manager.I am bi polar and I take celexa/zyprexa combo. It has worked so well for for 6 years along with a therapist.. I would reccomend you using the antidepressanet to help get you past this time.also give them time for them to work. while you are housebound try doing some light exercise to get your seritonin levels up.Just turn on some music and dance to it for a few minutes.
212753 tn?1275076711 I am full blown bi polar and I only take 5 mg fo zyprexa and 20 mg of celexa and I am doing great .I have been taking it for 6 years and it has made such an incerdible difference in my quality of life .I dont have the extremes i used to get and I react with normal emotions now. I am truly happy for you.
Avatar n tn When I was 12 years old I had been diagnosed with an essential tremor, my fingers and hands would shake and the doctor told me it was due to playing video games too much, poor diet and weak physical condition (I was really skinny despite the fact that I was involved in multiple sports and was pretty athletic, outgoing). I was put in a physical therapy class at a clinc just down the street from my school which I would go to during lunchtime.
1450639 tn?1284923584 When a person is diagnosed with schizophrenia they need to take antipsychotics for their entire life generally. Zyprexa (from what I remember it and what I was informed) takes a while to build up a blood level. Rispedal is more short acting in how long it takes to work. They also when a person is elderly need to rule out other evident concerns such as dementia but only a psychiatrist would understand all this in full. You could look up schizophrenia.com for more information.
723341 tn?1232341853 This is where unmedicated bipolars suffer more as well because linkages have been shown between undiagnosed and unmedicated bipolars and early onset dementia and senility.
544292 tn?1268886268 Please come on in and make yourself at home. This is a very good place to be if you want to get off and stay off Tramadol.
Avatar f tn I went to the NAMI website and was looking, but didn't find a lot about relationships of the two. It's just weird to me that there is a history of this AND dementia. I currently take Lamactil and it works well - I feel better than I have in my while life. I miss my mania (energy ONLY) parts at time, but overall, I feel better than I could have imagined.
Avatar n tn different meds will work for different people.I take celexa/zyprexa for bi polar and it works great but it might not work for you.I went therough lots of meds before I got on this combo. So you have to find what works for you. be open and honest with your doc and tell them all your concerns there are lots of good meds out there. you just have to find the one that is best for you.
Avatar n tn is now in a wheelchair, sleeps so sound during day that she cannot be awakened, and a severe mouth inflammation that makes it difficult for her to eat. She has high blood pressure & takes medication for it, along with high cholesterol. Her weakness has really progressed to the point where care is needed just for routine bathing & daily hygiene. A few weeks ago, she was using a walker & going to church without much problem.
Avatar n tn inappropriately, even when no one is with him, and has had difficulty : sleeping. : He has been administered occasional doses of Haldol to control his agitation. : Is this a common practice? Isn't Haldol usually used for long-term : treatment of schizophrenia? Are there side effects we should be concerned : about? : Thank you.
Avatar n tn I'm currently on lamictal , Zoloft, zyprexa ,vistaril and trilifon....doc accidentally did not fill my vistaril 3 weeks ago before tracing out of country and for 5 days I felt GREAT...got it refilled last week . Wondering if I can take kava on top of all this as I still have some bad anxiety still. Thank you...
Avatar n tn An underactive thyroid can lead to progressive loss of interest and initiative, slowing of mental processes, poor memory for recent events, fading of the personality's color and vivacity, general intellectual deterioration, depression with a paranoid flavor, and eventually, if not checked, to dementia and permanent harmful effects on the brain. In instances of each condition, some persons have been wrongly diagnosed, hospitalized for months, and treated unsuccessfully for psychosis.
