Venlafaxine and bipolar

Common Questions and Answers about Venlafaxine and bipolar

Avatar n tn They switched the Citalopram ro Zispin (Mirtazapine) which zombified me completely, and I had to come of off these after only three days. I'm now on 75mg Venlafaxine, 600mg Lithium Carbonate and 80mg Propranolol. I only have a few minor side effects at the moment, and so far so good. I don't sleep properly, so I've got 7.5mg Zopiclone to take also. How well known is Venlafaxine and how good is it. I have heard that Lithium has had a good history and is well recommended.
Avatar f tn I think I need to add, just so that Judy does not assume that her friend has schizophrenia, which it is primarily used for or bipolar disorder, and not so frequently with treating depression, that antipsychotic meds like Abilify, get added on if there are other symptoms going on like irritability, hostility, anger, or whatever, because of their "calming effect.
540093 tn?1279825434 I started taking 75mg of venlafaxine yesterday around 12pm and I noticed my pupils were instantly dilated and I have endless energy. Honestly I feel GREAT and am ready to take on the world... but not sleep. It's 6:17am and I haven't had a wink of sleep yet. Will this problem get better in time?
Avatar f tn I find I am okay with these meds, although not sure if we do need to tweak them or not, I was diagnosed 18 months ago with Bipolar II, and although given the diagnosis and meds to go on (I had been trying for years to figure out what the problem was, and had been on many medications for depression), I was never really told anything about bipolar, or what to expect, what things may happen etc. So This forum is great!
Avatar f tn I do not have much experience either as I was diagnosed a little over a year ago. Before that all the doctors I seen would just throw a pill at me and never explain what they were or why they gave them to me. All I knew is i had horrible panic attacks, mood swings, psychotic episodes(at times), etc and I really never sought help. When I finally started seeing these doctors it was at a mental health ER so they did not have much time to work with me. Anyway they put me on: Risperdol (sp?
Avatar n tn When you wrote this comment I was coming off Adderall with drawls due to the fact I was bipolar. The doctor told me bipolar and Adderall is not a good combination. Actually three doctors told me this. While I was on it I did some crazy stuff. I lost a good relationship and damage some friendships. I also got into legal trouble. I was never like this before I took Adderall. It is an Evil drug!
1655289 tn?1326046489 It never made since until I found out I was bipolar. I know you know it is unhealthy and you likely have more wisdom than I do about my own mania. However, we need to remember to accept ourselves and use the gift part of what we have and fight the curse. Don't fight it with alcohol, however. I also assume you are good or great at something. I am very proud of you for having 10 years of sobriety and I would take nothing from away from that for this relapse.
Avatar f tn Struggling to find an antidepressant with minimal weight gain, sedation, tachycardia and libido issues that can also adequately control my depression and anxiety. I've tried just about everything. If doc hasn't disowned me by Mon will try again. Fluoxetine, venlafaxine, Trazodone or back on Citalopram which I was on for about 20 years but began giving me bracycardia last time I was on them after having a break from them. Please advise.
Avatar f tn My Psych physician would like me to stop taking the venlafaxine and start taking a mood stabilizer. Any recommendation on the mood stabilizer I should take? Any recommendation on switching off of venlafaxine?
Avatar f tn There are a lot of medications for bipolar, both on and off label, and how well they work is really individual. First choices depend on which type of bipolar you have (I, II, NOS, cyclothymia) and what your main symptoms are. For instance, if you have psychosis with your episodes, and atypical antipsychotic might be a good place to start, but most of them can cause weight gain. Geodon is the exception, being weight neutral (and Abilify is almost as good apparently from the weight standpoint).
980052 tn?1262970679 I am currently back on depakote (was taken off during pregnancy) but am reaching out and asking if any 1 who has bipolar ll and anxiety disorder has had any luck w/ another mood stabilizer?? I am thinking of trying lamicatal b/c I have read alot about it and heard of many ppl who really feel good on it w/o the weight gain..I feel I am basically on my own in finding a med that works for me b/c my psy.
1581886 tn?1296545035 I recently gain weight 15 kg (30 pounds), I have been weakening up during night and eating, totally not me cause I was always skinny. Now I am fat. I am diagnozed bipolar depression and this weight gain thing begin with this combo of meds: venlaflaxine, klonopin, lamictal, tritico and concerta. Besides all, I am still so depressed, so the meds are not helping. I am thinking to switch on this combo: lamictal, wellbutrin, effexor, tritico and concerta. Anyone knows more about this.
Avatar m tn I have bipolar and has had it since 16. Now I am 26. In this time I have gone through more than 10 episodes of major depression and mania (mostly hypo) After initially being misdiagnosed and experimented with various medication my physician finally found two that worked. Lithium and Venlafaxine (Effexor) Now for around 1 and a half years I have been all right; some bad days but no episodes. However, a month ago I recently entered another episode of depression.
Avatar m tn Because I'm usually mellow, and calm, not super excited and overly optimistic. The medication I remember being on was Lexapro (did nothing for me), Seroquel XR (helped me stay asleep at night). I also remember a few others but they don't come to mind. Although a drug named Venlafaxine helped in low dosages, but once the doctor increases the dosage, I had severe stomach problems. PLEASE HELP ME OUT, doctors, patients, nurses, or even medical students.
Avatar m tn This is Part 2 of a 110,000 word (270 page font-14 or 350 page font-16) longitudinal, retrospective and prospective account of my experience with bipolar disorder and some other mental health problems over 70 years:1943 to 2014. Notes: This is a personal and idiosyncratic, medical and clinical study of what some life-study students call a chaos narrative. This study focuses on an aspect of my life involving several mental health issues, mainly bipolar 1 disorder.
Avatar m tn I have a 26 year old brother who is bipolar. He constantly fights with my father and mother, often it is over my parents trying to motivate him to take on very basic responsibilities (showering, eating healthy foods, keeping the common areas of our home clean). At times he threatens my father and I with physical harm, he is very intimidating (this would be a good time to mention that he is close to 7 feet tall, weighs close to 300 pounds and is a former college football player).
Avatar m tn bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymia, and some other types based on the nature and severity of mood episodes experienced. The range of types and experiences is often described as the bipolar spectrum. –See Bipolar Disorder, Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia. 1.4 My father also suffered from what seems to me now, in retrospect, a mild case of what today is sometimes called intermittent explosive disorder(I.E.D.) or impulse control disorder(I.C.D.

Avatar m tn But I have not commented on these notes nor included them here. The focus in this account of more than 75,000 words is on my bipolar problem and not any ancillary difficulties some of which are related to my BPD, like my chronic renal failure, but most of which are not. 3.13.1 It seemed appropriate to outline this detailed statement of my experience with BPD for several purposes since the issue of the nature of my problem and what was once called MD, at least until the 1990s, is a complex one.
Avatar m tn My aim here is to state as succinctly as possible the new set of symptoms as they had developed since I began the new medication package of sodium valproate(NAVAL) and venlafaxine(effexor) in April/May of 2007 and as these symptoms were exhibited; firstly, as of 30 November 2007, the date of the first consultation summarised below with my psychiatrist; and secondly, as of 13 November 2008, the date of my last consultation.
Avatar m tn the changeover to sodium valproate(2007) and venlafaxine(2007) in April/May 2007 each had its own story and its problematic for periods of time in the main for less than two months each as I have described as briefly as I can above. By June/July 2007, after 7 consultations with my psychiatrist, in the January to July period of 2007, it was obvious that the new medication package was giving good results.
Avatar m tn The negative effects may rear their ugly heads, yet again at some future time but, for now, I can put this account to bed. I have to thank my psychiatrist for his skills and expertise and the medications and consultations that are part of modern psychopharmacology and psychiatry for this progress—in the main.
Avatar m tn dizziness and nausea, back-ear-and-eye ache, headache and some two dozen other symptoms that we have put down on paper to try and monitor on a daily basis and to try and find some patterns. Sometimes, with the aid of steroids or some new drug, or some alternative medical treatment like clinical psychology, she seems to recover for a time, but her symptoms have eventually returned, sometimes mildly and sometimes not-so-mildly. 8.1.2.
Avatar f tn We weaned him off of it and took a 2 week hiatus from antidepressants and just gave him his focalin. We now switched him to concerta (lasts longer than focalin)...and added Prozac. Teacher really likes the results at school. However...evenings are hectic. He becomes very silly and immature. Often displaying autistic like behaviors--flapping hands, grunting, weird noises etc. Demeanor is relatively happy and giggly....Before just on ADHD meds...the withdrawal he was very angry and aggressive.
Avatar f tn So I am reading this really interesting book called Surviving Suboxone treatment and Withdrawals: Personal Experiences & Stories. One of the patients in the book spoke to a Doctor (not a sub Dr.) and was told that she was not going through Suboxone withdrawal alone, but 3 disorders at once, because of the Suboxone w/d The first disorder he spoke of is Depersonalization Disorder, below is the definition: Depersonalization Disorder is said to be a side effect of the Naloxone in Suboxone.

Avatar f tn Desvenlafaxine ( Pristiq ) is a novel form of the isolated major active metabolite of venlafaxine, and is categorized as a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). It works by blocking the transporter "reuptake" proteins for key neurotransmitters affecting mood, thereby leaving more active neurotransmitters in the synapse. The neurotransmitters affected are serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline).
Avatar n tn Well, being a male, I don't know anything about being pregnant, but as a father, I know plenty about worries of med reactions during pregnancy -- especially considering my wife is bipolar NOS and had to come off her meds during her second (and last) pregnancy. While that was difficult for her, I personally know it would have been truly impossible had one of her meds been Effexor XR. I am a diagnosed depressive who has been on Effexor since mid-June 2001.
Avatar n tn Hi, I have been on Effexor XR for 3 years and I have gained about 40-50pounds, most when my dose was increased to 225, now I am on 75mg b/c I'm getting ready to wean off the medicine in a couple of weeks, and I haven't lost anything yet. My eating habits have not changed and I exercise. I have always been underweight and I could eat whatever I wanted...I'm only 26 years old...I know my metabolism has changed some, but not enough to pack on 40 pounds.
